PCTOOLS? I prefer the Norton Utilities. Now they are back on my PC.. Symantec released last months Norton Utilities 2001 for Windows 2000 smile

PC-DOS 1.0 is funny. I tried it 10 years ago on my 286 AT. It even does not support hard disk drives laugh

Hey inferno.... in your system spec, you say you have 384mb ram, 393 listed. I'm willing to bet that that the "393mb listed" was really 393,216 kb ram. That's because 1mb = 1024kb, so 384mb = 384*1024 = 393,216kb. just a little fyi...

I think 286 was 120ns.

PCTOOLS??? That sound kinda familiar but I forgot what it was meant for. And btw, DosFreak, I like your 286, sounds pretty high tech! laugh. I suppose it came with a 12" monochrome (meaning green color only) IBM screen? Or did it came with that high-end 16 colors VGA one? haha

*Remembering the good old prehistoric days of computing* hehe

Yeah, I can't remember the speed of the ram. That was before my hardware days. I was a software freak. Didn't become software/hardware till '95. Ah well, I guess when I go visit my cousin I'll check up on mu ol' 286. laugh

12 years ago: 80386!

15 years ago : 80286!

The original IBM PC AT was released in 1985 as far I remember. It was powered by a 8 MHz 80286 that I overclocked to 12 MHz (change of quartz)!!!

Memory: 2 megs of 80 ns dil chips, of which 1 meg of paged extended memory.

HD: 40Mo.

Video: Hercules monochrome 720x348 if I remember.

OS: MsDos 4, then 5 with dosshell.

Pcshell/Pctools was a must at that time.

Favorite programming language was TurboPascal. I wrote my first fractal generator in 1985. Incredibly fast with a separate 80287 math coprocessor : a whole day to draw a Mandelbrot set with 256 iterations!

Good olde time smile

My machine (1990):

80286 12 Mhz

1MB Ram (120ns)

20MB HDD (Seagate 225 MFM)

MFM HD Controller

VGA Video Card (256KB, 800*600/16 colors! - Wow!)

Adlib soundcard (the original, not the lame rip off called Soundblaster ;))

14" Multisync monitor 1024*786 interlace or 800*600

OS: MS Dos 4.01/Windows 3.0

Remember the Sierra adventures? I found this nice Sierra soundtrack site http://www.queststudios.com/quest/sierrap1.html

Wow! There are also a few MP3 recorded from a Roland MT32/LAPC1 sound card. Now I finally know that my Adlib was crap laugh

Umm...interesting..I was lucky enough to have a 386DX as my first PC...the specs.....:

Amptron Motherboard

386DX40

Super huge Seagate 128Mb HDD :P

4Mb Ram (Increased to 8Mb because I need to run Simcity 2000)

ATI Wonder XL (something like that!)

14" Mag SVGA Monitor (Wow, SVGA!!!)

No Modem

No Sound Card

Having a CD-ROM Drive was a dream

Do you remember, in the old days, you have to use 11 disks to install WP51??

IBM PS/2 Model 286-30

12Mhz 286 CPU

30Mb HDD

13" IBM monitor with a .42 dot pitch (talk about going blind)

And PC Tools definitely ruled! It was a combination utilities/dosshell, but *highly* configurable. Like a combination of Magellan and Norton Utilities. wink

Does a Commodore 64 count as a first computer?

If so, put me down wiht that(With the Atari keyboard so I could play pacman)

Otherwise, Packard Bell 386/25 with 2 MB RAM and a 125MB hdd

(Incidentally, my parents then moved 3 years later to a Packard Bell P1/100 with 16MB RAM and a 1GB drive, then a Hewlett Packard Athlon 700 this year...So many Packards, so little...whatever)

Try to beat this one:

1975

- barebone pcb

- Motorola 6809 8-bit 2 MHz processor

- 2 KO memory

- hexadecimal keypad

- 4 7-segment led displays

- a few relays to control external stuff

- one serial interface

- sheet of paper as mass storage medium

- asm or some symbolic instructions language I do not remember

You will understand why Whistler does not impress me so much smilesmilesmile

My first computer was a Commodore 64..... it's sad to think that even my TI-86 is more powerful than that!

I remember when I got my first hard drive... I was cruisin' on a 286 with a 20mb drive... and I doubled that using DoubleSpace!

Only if your load the program from your second drive.

The first drive is 8.

load "program",8,1

run

and to load the directory of the disk:

load "$",8

list

laugh
