  1. I should really wait till I get home to my XP Box to research this myself, but I'll ask on here incase any of you guys know the answer. In XP when you go into the properties of an application, there is an option to run the program through compatability mode, with the option of 98/95/dos etc. What is this good for? It's not like you can install a game that requires 98 and just select compatability for 98. Is this supposed to be used for small applications or... ? is it just a pointless option. - Daniel.
  2. G'day, I installed XP Pro a few months ago, apart from hardware/game incompatibilities, it's not 'too' bad. Because I've got alot've games that won't run under XP, I decided to install 98 on the system aswell, nothing flashy, just using the standard Dual Boot configuration. My only annoyance is that whenever there's something I need under XP, I have to reboot into XP, which all up takes about a minute (I'm not a patient man). I have a second harddrive which I can put data on so I can access it under both OS's, But I was wondering if anyone knows of any software that will let me switch straight from XP-98 or 98-XP without having to reboot? I understand this probably is not possible considering that each OS has to load its own files, drivers, hardware etc, but if anyone knows of anything, I would be very appreciative. Cheers, Daniel.

    explorer.exe taking up 20% CPU..

thewizard75 yep my mistake, as I said I'm at work and not in front of my XP Box =) The program is actually called OPENME.EXE not wowexec. It produces an error when shutting down the PC that says 'Waiting for HTML Package to close' But MyNaMeIsRaGe didn't mention anything like that, so I'm probable still offtrack.

    Small Problem!

Well, since you've formatted there's not alot we can get you to try. I would point to either a virus, or just doing a good old disk defrag.

    What's better NAV or McAffee?

Hey look, each to their own right? I just refuse to use norton on the basis that on every PC I've seen it installed on, it seems as if it's taking a grip on the PC, I want a virus scanner that's going to find virus's and stay out of my way.
  7. I've been having a residual problem when I use Find files or folders in XP. I have one of the following problems happening randomly. 1) I choose find files or folders, it takes about a minute to load up, I type in what I want to find, it takes another minute, almost locks up the PC, then starts searching with no problems. 2) I choose find files or folders and it tells me I have to 'reinstall the package' 3) Nothing comes up, it just opens as an empty folder 4) It works fine Any idea's guys? - Daniel

    What's better NAV or McAffee?

Oh yeh, most of you guys are American *woops* VET is an australian made antivirus package *aussie aussie aussie!* I like it because it's a tiny install, it uses bugger all memory, it's faster than mcafee/norton, it's constantly upto date, and I get free downloads. website www.vet.com.au Norton causes too many conflictions.

    Cannot Locate CD-ROM ???

Hey I think backup copies should be allowed too, I can't see the problem if you own a legit copy.

    Network Sharing A Scanner?????

I don't think a detailed answer was needed for that Davros. Sharing a scanner is not only not possible, but completely pointless. Sorry to take the p*ss, but its like asking 'can I give share access to my mouse?'

    XP Compatability option

That's what I assumed, so ASSUMING it does that, ive tried it on games requiring win98 and it didnt work. is it just the main exe that requires the compatability option to be set or all executable files relevent to that application/game?

    explorer.exe taking up 20% CPU..

Im not in front of my XP Box so I can verify what I'm saying, but here we goes. Go into the registry and search for explorer.exe , check the instances you find, and make sure nothing else is bound to it. check in msconfig also. I had a problem similar where some bodgy advertising software was linking to explorer.exe and hogging memory. I cant remember what its called, might be wowexec.exe Also, control+alt+delete in processes and see if wowexec.exe is running, kill it if it is. - daniel.

    Cannot Locate CD-ROM ???

It's due to CD Copyright protection. Go to www.gamecopyworld.com , they'll tell you the protection it's using and how to copy it. FYI - You are NOT entitled to backup that game, check on westwood.com and ea.com

    AOE2 won't work with XP

AOE II was made before XP man, it's not gonna work on all boxes running XP, I have games on my pc that just will not work on my friends. Rather than try and root around with the config on my pc, i just installed a dual boot with 98 to play older games.

    what's the best ms os?

I use XP, 2K and 98, And XP is by far the most stable and user friendly. 2K is good, but XP is 2K + additions & fixes. Go XP.

    McAfee and IE6

Why did you mention Mcafee in the question if it's IE that's giving you grief? Uninstall Mcafee and see if the problems persist.

    Help!!!!!!!!

Wow, sounds like his harddrives in a bit've grief. I think that francly you've lost your data. Only alternative is, as PMISTRY mentioned, data recovery software, the is a free piece of software called 'Advanced Data Recovery', I can't remember who makes it, do a search on tucows or on the net. Another option may be to run ghost and compress the harddrive into an image file, then expand the image file to a CD so you can read it off that? Daniel

    Windows XP to 98

You can't downgrade from a FULL install of XP. If it was an upgrade from 98 - XP it is possible through control panel as long as you ticked that option whilst installing XP. I don't know what's gone wrong with your install of XP, but I have XP Pro on my PC, and I can safely say that it is the most stable Microsoft Operating System that I have ever used.

    Stuck in DOS compatability mode

Future reference, all IBM laptops come with a cd called a 'recovery cd' which contains Windows 9x, and all of the relevent drivers. Pop the cd in, and 15 minutes later you have a complete and ready to go laptop (no install prompts required) It's crucial to run that cd as their drivers are so difficult to get and specific with each PC/laptop, and of course will produce a bunch of problems if not loaded. The cd's are available from between $20-70 from IBM. Daniel.

98 vs. ME as Second OS

Something that's funny about your comment PMISTRY, is that even after ME was released, and all of the wholesalers announced that they were clearing out 'leftover' copies of Windows 98. Funny that, there seemed to be a huge excess, because this was over a year ago, and suprise suprise 98SE OEM Is still available. Thank god tho, I worked for a major computer retailer, and we packaged our PC's with Millenium for under a month before we said 'f*ckit, back to 98' The amount of complaints people had with Millenium was unreal.

98 vs. ME as Second OS

I have XP Pro and 98SE Installed on my PC, and it runs like a dream, I've done it for the same reasons as you, as good as XP is, unfortunately alot've my fav games won't work. I didn't use any partitioning or dual boot software, all I did was install XP, run up all of the drivers and configure it till I was happy, then pop in the 98SE CD, restart the computer (Making sure that the first boot device is set to CDROM in the bios) and away you go. Make sure when it boots up that you don't run the setup from the cd, tell it to start with CDROM Support, and then pop into a command prompt, then copy the cabs into a folder on the drive, call it WIN98 or whatever. (To create a folder, type MD WIN98 , then of course CD WIN98 to get into the folder), to copy the cabs folder, while in your new WIN98 directory, just type F:\WIN98 (F is whatever your CDROM driver letter is) Once they're copied, run the setup with the /is command after it "setup /is" I've really explained this on the fly, sorry for any typos and anything that didn't make sense, I can give you a more detailed explanation if need be. Good luck, Daniel
