    explorer.exe taking up 20% CPU..

thewizard75 yep my mistake, as I said I'm at work and not in front of my XP Box =) The program is actually called OPENME.EXE not wowexec. It produces an error when shutting down the PC that says 'Waiting for HTML Package to close' But MyNaMeIsRaGe didn't mention anything like that, so I'm probable still offtrack.

    Small Problem!

Well, since you've formatted there's not alot we can get you to try. I would point to either a virus, or just doing a good old disk defrag.

    What's better NAV or McAffee?

Hey look, each to their own right? I just refuse to use norton on the basis that on every PC I've seen it installed on, it seems as if it's taking a grip on the PC, I want a virus scanner that's going to find virus's and stay out of my way.
  5. I've been having a residual problem when I use Find files or folders in XP. I have one of the following problems happening randomly. 1) I choose find files or folders, it takes about a minute to load up, I type in what I want to find, it takes another minute, almost locks up the PC, then starts searching with no problems. 2) I choose find files or folders and it tells me I have to 'reinstall the package' 3) Nothing comes up, it just opens as an empty folder 4) It works fine Any idea's guys? - Daniel

    What's better NAV or McAffee?

Oh yeh, most of you guys are American *woops* VET is an australian made antivirus package *aussie aussie aussie!* I like it because it's a tiny install, it uses bugger all memory, it's faster than mcafee/norton, it's constantly upto date, and I get free downloads. website www.vet.com.au Norton causes too many conflictions.

    Cannot Locate CD-ROM ???

Hey I think backup copies should be allowed too, I can't see the problem if you own a legit copy.

    Network Sharing A Scanner?????

I don't think a detailed answer was needed for that Davros. Sharing a scanner is not only not possible, but completely pointless. Sorry to take the p*ss, but its like asking 'can I give share access to my mouse?'

    XP Compatability option

That's what I assumed, so ASSUMING it does that, ive tried it on games requiring win98 and it didnt work. is it just the main exe that requires the compatability option to be set or all executable files relevent to that application/game?

Yet another reason to NOT like XP.

Stop whining about it, just download ACDSEE.

    explorer.exe taking up 20% CPU..

Im not in front of my XP Box so I can verify what I'm saying, but here we goes. Go into the registry and search for explorer.exe , check the instances you find, and make sure nothing else is bound to it. check in msconfig also. I had a problem similar where some bodgy advertising software was linking to explorer.exe and hogging memory. I cant remember what its called, might be wowexec.exe Also, control+alt+delete in processes and see if wowexec.exe is running, kill it if it is. - daniel.

    Cannot Locate CD-ROM ???

It's due to CD Copyright protection. Go to www.gamecopyworld.com , they'll tell you the protection it's using and how to copy it. FYI - You are NOT entitled to backup that game, check on westwood.com and ea.com

    AOE2 won't work with XP

AOE II was made before XP man, it's not gonna work on all boxes running XP, I have games on my pc that just will not work on my friends. Rather than try and root around with the config on my pc, i just installed a dual boot with 98 to play older games.
  15. I should really wait till I get home to my XP Box to research this myself, but I'll ask on here incase any of you guys know the answer. In XP when you go into the properties of an application, there is an option to run the program through compatability mode, with the option of 98/95/dos etc. What is this good for? It's not like you can install a game that requires 98 and just select compatability for 98. Is this supposed to be used for small applications or... ? is it just a pointless option. - Daniel.
