Q3A: "could not load OpenGL subsystem"

Recommended Posts

OK, here's something fun and exciting. Go to try Quake3 today, and I get the code down below. I played it two days ago. No new hardware/software. The only thing I've done is set up accounts for my family members on this machine. I'm running Win2KServer, SP1 (full specs). The new acocunts are just 'Users' with default privileges, I log in as Adminstrator.

I tried to run the game under my brother's account, got the error. Logged back into my account, go the error. What the hell? I know it's an older version, but it worked two days ago.

Any ideas? My only thought is that when I tried it under my brother's acount, it corrupted something. Is that possible? I wouldn't think so.

yeahp if its not loading the openGL sub-system then its a openGL driver prob so just reload your drivers and see.

I'am not sure it will resolve your problem

but try this :

1. Click, Start, Run.

2. Type in regedit & hit Enter.

3. Go to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\OpenGLDrivers]. Delete the RIVATNT subkey.

4. Go to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\OpenGLDrivers] & make a New String Value entitled RIVATNT

& give it a value of nvoglnt.

Down8-

Did you have any luck fixing the problem?

This justs recently started happening with me too. I upgraded to the Nvidia 7.17 drivers, noticed the problem and tried to go back to 6.49. The drivers downgraded, but opengl still doesn't work. Any hints would be greatly appreciated.

I fixed it by opening Excel first, then playing Quake3.

I don't know what fixed it really. I was working one day, got bored, tried it and it worked.

Strange thing is that earlier version was a crack. I now own the game, and can't play it. When ever I start it, I get a black screen right after the 'id' intro. The only way to get out of it is to do a hard restart.

To top it off, my CD-ROM is on the blink, so I can't reinstall it. Oh well, UT must suffice for now - actually Tony Hawk has been beaten in my Q3 downtime.

I had this in Win95 once, you just need to find an older/different version of opengl32.dll and put in your Q3 directory.
