Keynotes picked for SCALE 8x; OSSIE, WIOS call for papers closes Jan. 15

LOS ANGELES – After reviewing more than 190 submissions for talks for the eighth annual Southern California Linux Expo (SCALE 8x), the SCALE board has submitted a list of speakers and have named the keynote speakers for the first-of-the-year Linux event.

While the talks and keynotes for SCALE 8x have been chosen and submitters notified, the call for papers for the Women In Open Source (WIOS) and Open Source Software in Education (OSSIE) programs is open until Friday, Jan. 15.

Tarus Balog and Karsten Wade have been chosen to give the keynotes at SCALE 8x, held at the Westin Los Angeles Airport hotel from Feb. 19-22.

A maintainer of the OpenNMS open source network management project and CEO of The OpenNMS Group, Balog will give his keynote on the topic, “So You Think You Want to Start an Open Source Business?â€

A long time Fedora Project contributor who is now a member of the open source community team at Red Hat, Wade will give his keynote on “Being a Catalyst in Communities: The Scientific Facts About the Open Source Way.â€

Submissions for SCALE were up 30 percent over last year, according to Shyam Kapadia, and the choices of who should speak and give the keynotes were difficult ones.

“While we’re glad that we got such a wide range of great submissions, we’re sorry we had to turn some away this time around,†said Kapadia, SCALE Speaker Chair. “We’re looking forward to reviewing the remaining papers for WIOS and OSSIE.â€
