Tried to Install FC4

Recommended Posts

I recently tried (several times) to install Fedora Core 4 on my machine. I downloaded the fc4-i386-disc1-4.iso. I used K3b to burn them, I did select "New data Project">tools>CD>Burn iso Image. I burned at 8x speed. Every time I tried to insall (I also tried the DVD image with the same results) Fc4 would come to the first main page, I would select "enter" to install in graphical mode (I also tried text, to no avail), FC4 would begin to load the kernel, and then I would get this:

[<c01202eb7>] panic+0x13b/0x1b0

[<c0416b4d7>] mount_block_root+0x39/0x50

[<c0416cc9>] mount_root+0x39/)x50

[<c0100357>] init+0xb7/0xf0

[<c01012b1>] kernel_thread_helper+0x5/0x14

Can someone tell me what the problem is? I also tried re-downloading fom a different mirror. Did I get the wrong download?

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Justbill

Did you check the md5 checksum? I'm still downloading FC4 now so I can't try installing yet.

If the md5 checksum(s) is/are correct then try:

When you are at the FC boot: prompt, press F2 - F4 to see addional commands for starting setup.

For example, I had to use:

linux resolution=1024x768 nofb, to get the graphical installer working right.

Try running it with:

linux pci=nosort

<edit>

I have successfully installed FC4 from DVD.

Only problem was with framebuffer for some reason.

I also tried to install Fedora Core 4 (i386) this weekend but had issues as well:

Acer Travelmate 210 notebook

Graphical installer freezes immediately with white screen. Text installer thinks that 8GB free space is not enough for a 1,6GB personal desktop installation.

I just tried Wilhelmus' nofb workaround but the graphical installer is still freezing.

MSI Athlon 1500+ PC

Anaconda fails with an error message. I didn’t try the text install yet on this machine.

AOpen EZ18 Barebone

It works perfectly on this machine. Not a single issue.

Fedora Core 3 installs on all 3 machines without any problems.

I'm beginning to think this is hopeless!

I tried both suggestions Wilhelmus had, and I still end up at this same screen:

[<c0416b4d7>] mount_block_root+0x39/0x50

[<c0416cc9>] mount_root+0x39/)x50

[<c0416d1e>] prepare_namespace+0x3e/0x120

[<c0100357>] initx0xb7/0xf0

[<c014d737>] softlockup_tick+0x87/0x160

[<c0108a93>] timer_interupt+0x63/0x170

IT WORKED!!!!!

Thank you Wilhelmus!

I typed:

linux resolution=1024x768 nofb

at the main boot prompt, and here we are, FC4 is up and running on this machine!

Thanks Again

Justbill

Hi.

I have the same problem as Justbill.

I tried both remedies that Wilhelmus suggested with the same panic error message.

I installed FC3 on the same machine without any hickups.

Please help
