Collisions on my home network...

Recommended Posts

Guest

Setup:

1 - 8 port hub 10mb (cheap)

1 - 4 port DLink Router 10/100

5 - Computers

Problem:

Between two of these computers when I transfer a file, the collision light of the hub comes on and stays on during the entire transfer. When I use Terminal Services or pcAnywhere between the same two computers, the collision light doesn't even flicker.

If I send the same huge file between two of the other computers on my network, the collision light does not come on, and the transfer takes the same amount of time as when the collision light comes on and stays on. Could it be that my hub is showing false collisions? After all, it's a cheap hub.

The NICs between the two computers are 1)3Com Etherlink III 2) SMC EZ Card SMC121TX

Both are on half duplex and both are on 10mb/sec. The 3com has buss mastering enabled... other than that, they should be configured the exact same. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
