  2. 1st off, yes, I'm running 2k3 like a desktop. I followed the whole Windows Server 2003 to Workstation Guide @ http://www.msfn.org/win2k3/ and everything went perfectly. I am so GLAD that a lot of the background services have been cut out. Also, no themes, windows messenger, sounds and whatever bloated extras there was in XP. In fact, services wise, I had to turn on & fully accelerate less in W2k3 then I had to turn off in WXP. But, I do have a problem with my RADEON 8500 (128MB). The OS sees it as having only 96MB and there are no CATALYST drivers for the OS nor am I led to believe there will ever be one. I'm wondering if someone will make some kind of tweaked out driver for it or is there something that exists out there already for it.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Here's a piece of FAQ from the ATI website:

ATI driver information for Microsoft Windows Server 2003

All drivers for Windows Server 2003 are maintained and deployed by Microsoft. This operating system currently provides drivers for RAGE XL products only.

While Windows Server 2003 display drivers are not available from ATI directly, you may obtain updates through Windows Update, or other deployment option from Microsoft.

Windows Server 2003 is positioned as a business and corporate enterprise server Operating System. It is not intended for home or personal use.

Please refer to Microsoft's website for detailed information.

  3. Man, I'm going to try to get this simple. Keep in mind I'm giving you examples and not the actual IPs and what not. wink

I recently changed NAME SERVERS for 2 websites (exact same settings) on the 20th of August (It's now the 23rd).

"heaven.com" seems to be working perfectly. I can view the webpage itself, go to the admin control panel and even check my POP3 account. I admit, sometimes my POP3 flakes out but overall it seems to be coming though okay, I guess. smile

"hell.com" works sporadically on my computer only. I was able to do everything I could do on "heaven.com" but it was working intermittently. Sometimes it takes me back to the old INTERNET PROVIDER account I had the "hell.com" pointing to and sometimes I get the infamous "cannot find server". Instead of using the "hell.com/control_panel" I have to use "123.45.67.890/conrol_panel". Instead of using "hell.com" I have to use "123.45.67.890/~viewme/" to view the webpage. When it tries to check the email it states: Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Account: 'HITMEN4HIRE', Server: 'mail.808natives.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F. I've triple checked times 50 :x and all the settings are correct on the webserver. I keep thinking the NAME SERVER must still be resolving but "heaven.com" works pefectly. ;(

Any insight would be greatly appreciated. laugh

P.S. Bare in mind that everyone else seems to be able to access the webpage for viewing normally. I even had my partners check out their email and even accessing the control_panel regularly and it works fine for them.

  4. I try to go to WINDOWS UPDATE by using the IE > TOOLS choice or thru START > ALL PROGRAMS but get redirected here:

Thank you for your interest in Windows Update

Windows Update is the online extension of Windows that helps you get the most out of your computer.

The latest version of Windows Update is available on computers that are running Microsoft Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows Millennium Edition, Windows 2000 (except Windows 2000 Datacenter Server), Windows XP, and the Windows Server 2003 family.

    Any ideas?

    Have you tried uninstalling?

    It may need cleaning too.

Make sure its recognized as dvd rom, with the correct regional settings

    Luck we live Hawai'i yeah?

    Thanks fore the expedient reply!

It's still a 'no go' though.

Living in Hawaii? We're lucky indeed. laugh

  6. Only thing I did different on my re-install of XP Pro, was have My Computer be set up as a "Standard PC", instead of a "ACPI-PC". (For music production reasons.)

It will read DATA and MUSIC CDs but, that's it.

I see no problems in DEVICE MANAGER.

Any insight would be greaty appreciated.

Thanks for cutting-n-pasting the marketing material from Executive Software's web site. However, you forgot to include marketing material from the other defrag vendors - who also claim to be the fastest defragmenter available for Windows - have the most advanced defrag technology, etc smile

Simply put.... IMHO, PERFECTDISK didn't stand up to DISKEEPER. I have literally tried them all (defrag progs). On the other hand, if DK didn't exist, I'd use PD w/o a second thought. Regarding actual usage of DK and myself not representing a software company, DK does what it claims.

  8. FRAGMENTATION the Condition, the Cause, the CURE by: Craig Jensen

    Online book: http://www.execsoft.com/fragbook/fragbook.htm

When you find out you have fragmentation, your next concern should be, "How bad is it?" If the Disk Analysis reveals a Mean Fragments Per File (fragmentation rating) of 1.2 (badly fragmented) or more, you may be in trouble. You had better do something about that fast, before the system stops altogether.

If you think I am exaggerating, consider this: One site, with a combination system/user disk with 4.9 fragments per file required nearly half an hour for each user to log on. This dropped to a few seconds once the main disk was defragmented. Another system, with an incredible 18.7 fragments per file, was literally unusable until defragmented.

A fragmentation rating of 1.2 means there are 20% more pieces of files on the disk than there are files, indicating perhaps 20% extra computer work needed. It should be pointed out that these numbers are merely indicators. If only a few files are badly fragmented while the rest are contiguous, and those few fragmented files are never accessed, the fragmentation may have no performance impact at all. On the other hand, if your applications are accessing the fragmented files heavily, the performance impact could be much greater than 20%. You have to look further to be sure. For example, if there were 1,000 files and only one of those files is ever used, but that one is fragmented into 200 pieces (20% of the total fragments on the disk), you have a serious problem, much worse than the 20% figure would indicate. In other words, it is not the fact that a file is fragmented that causes performance problems, it is the computer's attempts to access the file that degrade performance.

    DISKEEPER LITE (Freeware!)

    http://www.execsoft.com/freeware/diskeeper-lite/download.asp

DISKEEPER: Fastest Windows defragmenter ever built. Defragments drives much more thoroughly than the disk defragmenter in Windows 2000/XP and is able to do so 300% to 500% faster!

Keeping your system up and running is the first priority. If your system goes down, work doesn’t get done and money and time are wasted.

Fragmentation causes rapid declines in stability. System crashes, slow file access and even blue screens are often due to fragmentation. Think of how much time, money and aggravation you’d save if you solved your system problems before they occurred.

Uptime is your business. Diskeeper will be the best coworker you ever had.

    The Diskeeper difference:

Tested in independent labs to increase system performance up to 200% or more.

The most advanced defragmentation technology available.

National Software Testing Lab (NSTL) proven 300-500% faster and more thorough than the built-in defragmenter.

Optimized for Microsoft Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows Me, Windows 98 and Windows NT

  10. I personally use ePrompter to check all of my email (POP, Hotmail, Yahoo, etc.) at a time interval that I personally set and it informs me w/an audio alert and/or the rotating icon in the system tray. I've also listed 2 Outlook Express "minimize to system tray" specific programs.

    ePrompter 1.05 SR17 January 14, 2002www.eprompter.com

ePrompter is a free e-mail notification program that automatically checks up to eight password-protected e-mail accounts for AOL, Hotmail, Juno, Netscape, USA.net, Rediffmail, Yahoo, POP3, AltaVista, Email.com, GO.com, iname, Lycos, Mail.com, MSN, OneBox, Switchboard, and hundreds of other e-mail domains--simultaneously.

ePrompter features a primary message screen and a unique rotating tray icon. It also features a screensaver that lets you know the number of new messages in each of your accounts and gives you the ability to read and/or delete each message online or offline with the click of an icon. An audio prompt alerts you to new messages.

When your computer is online, ePrompter retrieves e-mail at intervals determined by you, up[censored] the ePrompter screens and icon accordingly. Additionally, you can manually update all of your e-mail accounts or an individual account at any time. When your computer is offline, ePrompter's auto-dial feature can automatically dial up an online connection to retrieve your e-mail and update the notifications accordingly.

This version features a fix for AOL. Other recent versions included fixes for Yahoo, Mail.com and Email.com. If you are upgrading, be sure to completely exit ePrompter before installing the new version.

    OutTray 2.01 [August 7, 2001] www.loft.dk

OutTray minimizes Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express down in the Windows system tray as an icon by the clock. OutTray reacts after the user has minimized Outlook in the normal way, allowing you to specify the number of seconds, as a command-line parameter, that you would like to wait before moving the program to the system tray.

The last update included fixes for use of single identity in Outlook, maximizing Outlook, and Win2K. Version 2.0 supports simultaneous use of Outlook and Outlook Express, and multiple Outlook windows. Version 2.01 improves the Options dialog, ensures that only one instance of OutTray can be run at a time, allows simultaneous use of Outlook and Outlook Express and multiple Outlook windows.

    AllToTray 2.2 [January 22, 2002] www.dntsoft.com

AllToTray allows you to minimize ANY window to your System Tray. It adds the option 'Minimize to Tray' to the System menu of the window. If you have checked this option, AllToTray will minimize the window to your System Tray any time you minimize it. Minimize the window as usually (mouse or keyboard). To restore the window you will click on its icon on your System Tray. New version introduces the options : double click to restore the window, every window has its icon on tray or one icon for all minimized windows, show the number of minimized windows as icon, right-click menu of the icon, arrange the applications by title, type or last accessed. You get more free space on Taskbar without alterate the full functionality of the applications!

I would suggest to modify your settings to improve performance since you seem to be saying it's due to GRAPHICS.

Windows XP uses processor time to handle system performance according to default settings, which can be adjusted for your computing needs. Also, settings that govern visual effects enhance the appearance of the Windows XP interface, but can slow down performance. You can fine–tune settings in Windows XP Professional to improve performance:

Right–click My Computer, and then click Properties.

Click the Advanced tab, and in the Performance area, click Settings.

On the Visual Effects tab, click the Custom radio button, and then select which UI features to disable to improve performance.

Click the Advanced tab, and in the Processor scheduling area, click the Background services radio button. Selecting this option means that background tasks that you want to run while you work, such as backup utilities or print jobs, will share processor time equally with programs.

    Hope this helps.

  13. I was doing some ADMIN cleanup and accidentally deleted the sub folders in ACCESSORIES. *meant to cut and paste from ALL USERS to the MAIN ADMIN folder - never do work when you're mentally exausted. ;(

Any way of getting those folders and stuff back (system tools, etc.)?

Tried to do the ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS for WINDOWS COMPONENTS and got some stuff but SYSTEM TOOLS, for instance, only shows the "character map" icon. YiKeS!!! 8)

    ANY INSIGHT WOULD BE APPRECIATED!
