  1. 8) I've reformatted the MAIN DRIVE (C drive several times before just to clean stuff out & I never had this problem before, within WinXP b2600. My SECONDARY HARD DRIVE is recognized in my BIOS and even within Device Manager but not in My Desktop. I've uninstalled the SECONDARY HARD DRIVE in Device Manager, rebooted and it was installed automatically upon bootup. I've never physically opened anything up lately so no wires or anyt6hing else has been touched. The only thing different, program wise, is that I had Roxio RollBack installed previously & working before the clean install was done. I NEED INSIGHT!!! 2. 1st off, yes, I'm running 2k3 like a desktop. I followed the whole Windows Server 2003 to Workstation Guide @ http://www.msfn.org/win2k3/ and everything went perfectly. I am so GLAD that a lot of the background services have been cut out. Also, no themes, windows messenger, sounds and whatever bloated extras there was in XP. In fact, services wise, I had to turn on & fully accelerate less in W2k3 then I had to turn off in WXP. But, I do have a problem with my RADEON 8500 (128MB). The OS sees it as having only 96MB and there are no CATALYST drivers for the OS nor am I led to believe there will ever be one. I'm wondering if someone will make some kind of tweaked out driver for it or is there something that exists out there already for it. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Here's a piece of FAQ from the ATI website: ATI driver information for Microsoft Windows Server 2003 All drivers for Windows Server 2003 are maintained and deployed by Microsoft. This operating system currently provides drivers for RAGE XL products only. While Windows Server 2003 display drivers are not available from ATI directly, you may obtain updates through Windows Update, or other deployment option from Microsoft. Windows Server 2003 is positioned as a business and corporate enterprise server Operating System. It is not intended for home or personal use. Please refer to Microsoft's website for detailed information. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/default.mspx INFO-BASE# 4227 KEYWORDS: Windows Server 2003 Driver

    INTEL ACTIVE MONITOR & WIN2K3

I tried to install the INTEL ACTIVE MONITOR v1.19 on my Windows 2003 Server computer [intel Desktop Board (D815EFV-D815EPFV)] and kept getting this error message: "The Intel SM Bus drive could not be installed. This is a required driver. The installation will now abort." It worked fine in XP. Any insight would be geatly appeciated.
  4. Man, I *hate* when something minor happens and I can't figure it out. But, thank goodness for the NTCOMPATIBLE forums. I was downloading, using IE and I *know* I clicked something by mistake (happy left-finger clicker). Now, when I try to download other things, it automatically downloads to a temp folder. I don't have the option to choose where I want the download to go. How the heck do I change it back?!?!?! Come on peeps, don't fail me now.... like my brain already did.
  5. DISKEEPER 8.0 PRO won't defrag my C: cuz it states that CHKDSK is scheduled to run upon next reboot. I reboot & nothing happens. I run a read-only CHKDSK and no errors are found. I can't run a CHDSK /F or NORTON DISKDOCTOR [fix errors] without having to reboot. Nonetheless, no errors are found. NORTON SPEEDISK will work though. I even tried SAFEMODE and DIAGNOSTIC START-UP mode to do something but still.... same ol', same ol'. Any ideas to get it running?
  6. Quote: Check out http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;831426&Product=winxp I know you said it's not actually running, but there may be a reg key messed up there. Good luck! I appreciate the response but there was no "BootExecute" in the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager" reg. key.

[XP or 2K3]: O&O defrag or..

Quote: Actually, it wasnt' much of a "debate". We barely got started before you stopped participating. You had made a claim that PD didn't stand up to DK. I had asked you to elaborate and you never responded. If you would like to continue our "debate", it's your turn - Greg/Raxco Software Microsoft MVP - Windows Storage Management/File System Disclaimer: I work for Raxco Software, the maker of PerfectDisk - a commercial defrag utility, as a systems engineer in the support department. Get a life dawg. Sell your ish elsewhere. Whatever you want ish to stand for, knock yourself out... literally. I ain't in to 'internet' beef - 'nuff said.

(hopefully) easy IE question (regarding downloads)

I figured it out. Within WINDOWS EXPLORER, go to TOOLS > FOLDER OPTIONS > FILE TYPES. Look for the "ZIP" file settings. Click on ADVANCED. Make sure your settings show this: a tick marked "CONFRIM OPEN AFTER DOWNLOAD". Now click on EDIT. Make sure 'action' says "OPEN". Application used to perform action can be whatever you use to open up ZIP files. a tick marked "USe DDE". That's basically it.

[XP or 2K3]: O&O defrag or..

Quote: Under XP Pro (or XP 2K3) which is the least problematic defrag tool OTHER than the native service. I currently use O&O defrag. I especially enjoy the stealth mode defrag. (defrag while playing intensive video games or the like) what do you use and why? TIA I use DISKEEPER. I used O&O but, IMHO, DISKEEPER was faster. The background (i guess stealth mode) defragging kicks @$$. I use DISKEEPER SERVER ENTERPRISE EDITION for my WIN2K3 computer and DISKEEPER PROFESSIONAL for my WINXP-PRO computer. I had this debate with a PERFECT DISK (Raxco Software) employee here and he got pretty "hyper". I'm just a consumer who *does* try different programs before he opens his mouth. Here's the thread, it's hilarious: http://ntcompatible.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=23180&highlight=

(hopefully) easy IE question (regarding downloads)

Quote: Try using system restore. I had this problem too last week. Try restore to the point before it started doing that. I think a windows update may have caused the issue Too bad I have "System Restore" off. Dang.

(hopefully) easy IE question (regarding downloads)

Quote: Go to Tools >internet Options>Advanced and click restore defaults Well gawdayam. The funny thing is that I *swear* that I tried that. That's why I came asking for help. Nonetheless, I did it again. And, hey, it worked. Bottom line. Thanks, homie.

(hopefully) easy IE question (regarding downloads)

Quote: Can you right click and click "save as" the pick a directory? I can if the link is direct. If I try to do it on a link that re-directs me, I'll end up downloading some kind of HTML document, for instance. (i.e. javascripts)
  15. Anyone got a XP / SERVER 2K3 "services" comparison guide? I like the fact that 2K3 is SLIMMED down but, I *need* the compatibility of XP. In short, I'd like to uninstall and/or stop services from running in XP that don't run in 2K3. Anybody got a list? I don't have time to compare both XP and 2K3 on my own. Thanks a bunch.
  16. Quote: There are different default settings for the services in Win2k3 depending on the server edition (Standard, Enterprise,Datacenter, Web), but maybe this link can provide the information you want: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtec...lt_settings.asp Though I would probably go for service guide made for WinXP like this one: http://www.blkviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm Awesome advice. Looks like I'll be busy this weekend but, nonetheless, it sure seems informative. I appreciate it!

    Changing System Properties

Quote: I have just tried using OEMINFO.INI and OEMINFO.BMP (In Win2k though) and they work fine when placed in %Windir%\System and also in %Windir%\System32 I'm glad you figured it out.

    INTEL ACTIVE MONITOR & WIN2K3

Quote: Quote: Contact intel for a verison that supports windows 2003. Done. Waiting for a reply. Thanks. Thank you for contacting Intel® Technical Support. Unfortunately, Microsoft* Windows* Server 2003 is not supported on the Intel® Desktop Boards. The reason why you are experiencing problems with the SMBus driver installing the Intel® Active Monitor, as well as the Intel® Application Accelerator on your Intel® Desktop Board D815E(P)FV is because the operating system support of this Intel® Motherboard is restricted up to Windows* XP. Unfortunately, none of the Intel® Desktop Boards is designed to support any server-based operating systems, either.

    Changing System Properties

Check out http://www.xteq.com/products/xset/index.html. Straight from the website: Xteq X-Setup is a so-called "hacker" or "tweaker" program. It allows you to change settings that are normally hidden deeply in some configuration-files like the registry fast and easily. X-Setup offers several advantages, making it the "ultimate tool for black belt system tuning". It's runs on any Windows version (incl. XP), is clutter-free, easy to use, extensible, powerful, covers any aspect of your computer and has more configuration options than any other tweaker. For a complete listing of the features of X-Setup, please see our Features Page. But not only we think Xteq -Setup is a great utility, please have a look at the X-Setup Awards Page. Or simply read this quote from one of our customers: "X-Setup is to all other "tweakers" like a truckload of bricks is like to a pebble...".

    NORTON SW equivalence for WIN2K3?

I really dig Norton WinDoctor and CleanSweep. The thought of files building up and dead registry strings really bug me. I used System Mechanic ;( and hooboy, did it kill the OS. ;( Any ideas? Thx!

    NORTON SW equivalence for WIN2K3?

Quote: MS assumes that anyone using 2k3 Server knows, or should now how to do those things without the use of software Like Norton Although they do offer enterprise AV solutions I got SAV Corporate Edition but man, I have no time to manually delete dead registry keys and click on each of my partitions for a "Disk Cleanup". I hear u tho, dawg. Thanks.

WINDOWS SERVER 2003 & ATI RADEON DRIVER

Okay... I reformatted and went back to XP and it still read 96MB instead of the full 128MB. I reformatted and went back to 2K3 and it still read 96MB. I used the "xbeta" uxtheme.dll auto patch and upon reboot, I got a uxtheme.dll error and couldn't load explorer.exe. I reformatted once again and installed 2K3 and now it shows the full 128MB. I have no idea but, heck, it works. I've already installed the Catalyst 3.7 driver and Direct 9.0b. Just one of those weekends, I guess. I'd like to thank ALL of you who posted to help and even to those who posted to say, "Hey, runs fine on my system". Seriously, I really needed that or I would've thought it was impossible to get things going right. Message to sapiens74: Now I can *really* get some work done here @ home and reprogram my RCA on-screen TV guide. Man, Oceanic totally screwed up my analog cable listing line up. I need to know where my Food Network and Sci-Fi channels. Hahaha.

WINDOWS SERVER 2003 & ATI RADEON DRIVER

Quote: Check all the subkeys under ATI Technologies, It's in there somewhere Only "key names" I could basically find that had ATI Technologies in it were: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ATI Technologies\CBT and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\InstalledOptions\Microsoft Corporation\Video\ATI Technologies Inc.\ATI Radeon I couldn't find anything in relations to ATI stating a key with "CDS/Memory".
