ADSL Speed Touch USB - BT Internet ! I Need Help!

Any help here would be great guys... ANY HELP AT ALL!!! Hope
  3. Hi there, Ok, as u might have guessed i have BT internet with a Alcatel Speed Touch USB Modem. When the machine boots up, the modem diagnostics icon in my task bar goes green, which means everything is working fine. When i play counter strike though, I sometimes loose the connection and the icon turns yellow! when this happens i cant get access to the internet anymore unless i restart my machine. Does anyone know why this happens or what does it mean when the icon turns yellow? By any chance is it because BT does not allow on-line gaming? i know this was the case when u had a 56K but though it would have been different with ADSL. Finally, with my ADSL connection, it takes virtually the same amount of time to open a web page as my 56K did but when i download files it clocks up to around 50 - 60Kbps! and is very fast whilst playing net games! Is this normal for web pages to open so slowly with ADSL? Iv tried numerous tests on the internet to test my bandwidth and they vary ALLOT! when i first tried the test, I got an averaged of 66Kbps! which is Top-notch. Lately im only getting 12 - 15Kbps. As said b4 though, when downloading files its very speedy though! Any response would me luvly-jublee Cheers people GH_Hope P.S I dont think this is an XP propbelm because i know LOTS of people who are experiencing this fault with win98 and 2k

    Are firewalls really necesary?

Ok, so my definition of a hacker was far fetched and unrealistec (movie-like), my apologies. Like i said before, iv never been hacked (clutch's definition not mine) or known anyone to have been, so i have never been exposed to the dangers involved which is why i have posted these messages. Cheers for all the response, and cheers for clutch for being so subtle, its the best way really Hope

    Are firewalls really necesary?

So a firewall is just to prevent a hacker? because you can eleminate the threat of viruses and trojans with a virus checker/killer. Once again, is the threat of being hacked that high? really, when u think of the amount of people connected to the internet 2-day with broadband, the chances must be small! Even so, how can other parties that make software i.e blackice and zone alarm be more effective than XP's own firewall? I ask this question because iv never EVER met anyone who has been hacked properly. My definition of being hacked properly is gaining access to a persons copmuter by waiting and the use of code and patience and NOT crap client - server rip off programs such as CLIENT. cheers for the replies. Are firewalls really necesary?

I previously posted a thread about firewalss and there effectiveness, and got lots of good replies (thank u all for that). I am now thinking to myself, is there a need for these firewalls! I understand that they protect your copmuter from unwanted access i.e hackers and other un-usefull stuff, but is there really a high chance of being hacked from people on the net. I never really talk to people much over the net just download. so how could people gain my ip to hack me? cheers Hope

    Firewall 4 WinXP

Cheers for all the help. I might as well try all the firewalls and get back to u with the results of each 1. I think at this rate, XP might be coming off my copmuter and win2k going on. cheers again Hope

    Firewall 4 WinXP

Hi Im about to (or thinking about) putting a firewall on my computer because will shortly be getting static connection to the Internet. i currently have a super fast 56K modem!!!! With having a dial-up network i did not bother with a firewall for obvious reasons. I have windows XP that has its own firewall (im guessing that it’s the same firewall as 2000). Could anyone tell me if this firewall would be anygood to use? I have loads of firewall software kicking around on cds (norten, zonealarm etc) but I dont want to put them on my PC if XP will do the job. I especially don’t want to put Norton onto my PC because Norton products do my T*ts right in by trying to take controll over your pc, when u know all it consaists of is a normal fireall with colourfull screens and buttons.... cheers if u can help Hope
