    Win98se versus WinME

If you want to play games and you want any semblance of stability then forget ME its CRAP. ME will become corrupted quicker than you can blink an eye. ME is as flaky as dandruf IF you use ME and manage to get 1 week without it hanging and crashing then you are doing exceptionally well. ME is as tempremental as a schizophrenic. If you use ME at least you will become adept at installing os's because thats what you will be doing constantly, until you realise that it is CRAP. Dont listen to anyone who says ME is good, its CRAP,if you dont belive me install it and enjoy, enjoy being driven insane by FREEKIN ME,but you would have to be a masochist. Use 98se for games, its not perfect, far from it but at least you will get a hell of a lot more stability out of it.

That link takes you to a poll thats over a month old!and shows 2000 being the os of choise for a minor percent more people than 98se,so what.No contest!98se is still the winner for gamers full stop, without a doubt. Also on that poll there were imberciles praising the glories of an os like ME which is CRAAAAAAPPP!It's so crap it's CRAAAAAAAAAAAAPPPPPPPP! A month old poll, dummies praising ME,what values that?None! 98se is the winner hands down for gamers, the truth's the truth even if you cant accept it!

Tried both nvidia and asus drivers in 2000 and it still crashed.98se no problemo! If your into games 98SE is the sys of choice for most diehard gamers, i'll bet on that to be a fact!Sure it lacks the stability of 2000 not to mention other known problems but for gaming compatibility, can't beat it and thats that!

    XP problemlo?!

Could be any number of things?Dodgy IDE cable, flakey memory module, hard drive problems, corrupted software,I certainly do'nt envy your current predicament.Good luck. Try fresh install of os,complete drive reformat that means ALL of tour hard drives and minimal software installation and I mean minimal being only necessary drivers+ programs that you MUST have.mun like this for a few days and take note.If there are no probs then start installing whatever else you need, but keep taking note to see if any new installation causes any probs. If there are no problems after fresh os install, chances are its software,if prob persists after fresh os install then chances are its hardware, which means the old process of elimination beckons you on it's merry journey.Happy travels.

    winxprc2+new geforce3+opengl games=lock up

By the way if the reference drivers you initially installed for V8200 where off the ASUS install cd and were v12.10 then these drivers were buggy.I installed these drivers and they corrupted the os.I had to reinstall the os after using the 12.10's.Others complained of the same problem with these drivers.

It seems that as I read more about the problems people are having with Xp,there are lots of them by the way,and the extreme measures that some are taking eg: flashing vga's bios to make the video card run properly, the more evident it is becoming that the problems are in the programing of the os,software, drivers and not the hardware. ASUS V8200 is one of the best cards money can buy and to go and change agp4x(which is the default bios setting on most of the latest motherboards)back to 2x to try and get V8200 to preforme better is ludicrous. You guys have to be more patient and let the hardware manafactures bring out improved drivers for XP and Microsoft to bring out the first service pack which there will no doubt be,because this is where the problems lie.
  9. Does anyone know if and when ASUS are going to bring out drivers for XP.ASUS 1260 reference drivers wont load, crash system.Am using NVIDIA 1470 w2k drivers, which work ok but I dont usually like using non reference drivers for ASUS AGP cards as there is allways a prerormance drop due to ASUS AGP cards being slightly left of centre from NVIDIAs reference board design. ASUS drivers allways work better on ASUS cards.ANyone know when drivers will be available for WinXP.

    Xp+xp

Hercules game theaterXP + WindowsXP yes, there are some problems. I managed to install w2k drivers off setup cd with all the associated whinging directed at me by winXP regarding "not digitally signed by microsoft",well they better hurry up and signe more drivers and hardeware manafacturers better hurry and get compattible drivers out. Anyway getting back to it,I got Herc working for the life of me I cant remember how but it worked fine.WinXP kept prompting to send unlimited error reports all through the process of getting Herc going though and I think WinXP got heavilly corrupted in the process. The OS couldnt even cope with ASUS 1260 V2800 drivers though and wouldnt restart until I restored to a previous config.WinXP has problems.HercXP game theater works fine on my 98se sys with dX8 no problems whatsoever. WinXP dont hurry to upgrade, wait a few months after it is officially released and all the official drivers are out, then test run it.Once its officially out I wont hold back on bombarding Microsoft with the thousands of error repports that Im sure are still going to pop up.

    Wierd XP freeze

Yeh the XP's frozen up on me a few times before I deleted the sucker but I was giving it heaps. Compatibility is still a issue with XP.A friend loaded XP {2600} to dual boot,he had a raid/0 allignment by the way and lost everthing.Raid can be flaky, maby this could be the problem? Anyway,os's are like that, they can become corrupted no matter how stable they are said to be.XP is new, you'll just have to be patient if you plan on using it now till all the creases are ironed out, which can take TIME.

    XP gonna flop?

A few points. The majority of comp users are probably satisfied at the moment with their os and comp setup ie corporations, buisnesses, home users etc.Why pay to upgrade the os if everythings is ok for present? W2k users, why bother upgrade to XP? it's basically the same. 98 gamers will take caution,w2k is not all that compattible with a lot of games so why should XP be. Current comp market is in a slump at the moment, most comp users as i've mentioned are probably happy with their setup, power users who have to have all the latest hardeware for apps, games, whatever are the minority compared to the masses of comp users,so XP's inroads into the market through purchasing of new comp's pre setup with XP wont be that substantial for quite some time. To upgrade from 98 for gamers remains to be seen, depending on XP compatibility. To upgrade from w2k just to run apps? well we'll see. The technology behind hardware is moving ahead phenomenally fast and the consumer market cant keep up,high end users are the minority and they usually buy components seperatly to build their own systems and they will usually stick with an os that they know,XP will have to prove to be somthing supperior to warrant upgrading to this minority. The majority are not going to upgrade hardware because they dont need it or need to.Their satisfied running what they already have so why bother with XP. XP climb to the top will be slow and remains to be seen,my experience with it so far is far from life changing and I am sure there will be many others who will agree.
