    How to use checkdisk?

I remembered of a better way to start CHKDSK: In "My Computer" right click your disk, go to "Properties", then select "Tools" tab and click "Check Now..." button... But I have no idea where the logs could be...

    WindowsXP Logon Screen

Hello there! Yesterday my Welcome Logon Screen (where you click a user you want) just changed to the one like in Windows 2000 (you need to type username in a textbox)... How can I change it back to WindowsXP default Logon screen? I tried in Control Panel | User Accounts | Change the way users log on or off... And "[x] Use the Welcome screen" was already checked. I unchecked it, rebooted the system... Then I checked it back agan, reboted the system and I am still having this Windows 2000 - like logon screen... So I think that something terribly went wrong... What coult it be? Do I need to change logon screen somewhere else or what? BTW: Since logging on at the Welcome screen is not available on computers that are members of a network domain, I must tell that I am not a member of any domain, I am running just a small home workgroup network... And Welcome Screen Logon worked fine till yesterday... I didn't install anything special that could modify the login files (like PC Anywhere does...) Does anyone know anything about those Login files? Please help me.

    How to use checkdisk?

Hi! Press START, RUN type CMD and in console type: CHKDSK C: /F /X (where C: is disk drive you want to check...) /F Fixes errors on the disk. /X Forces the volume to dismount first if necessary. All opened handles to the volume would then be invalid...

  6. Hi... Where can I see all the harddisk accesses or something because I would like to find out why my disk drive is almost all the time active and what application or process is causing this...
  7. Hi, I have one more question about Indexing Service and cidaemon.exe... Why is Indexing Service good for? I mean cidaemon.exe hangs on my HDD all and every time... nonstop... It's just scrabbling all the time... What's good advantage of Indexing Service? Just to find a file a few seconds faster than without indexing? Does system works faster if disk drives are indexed? I am about to manualy disable indexing service but I am affraid I am going to loose performance because of this... Most of it's time, Indexing service is doing (infinitely) this and nothing else: -------------------------------------------------------------------- 4 14:52:38 cidaemon.exe:1644 IRP_MJ_CREATE C:\ SUCCESS Attributes: Any Options: Open Directory 5 14:52:38 cidaemon.exe:1644 IRP_MJ_CLEANUP C:\ SUCCESS 6 14:52:38 cidaemon.exe:1644 IRP_MJ_CLOSE C:\ SUCCESS 7 14:52:38 cidaemon.exe:1644 IRP_MJ_CREATE C:\ SUCCESS Attributes: Any Options: Open Directory 8 14:52:38 cidaemon.exe:1644 IRP_MJ_CLEANUP C:\ SUCCESS 9 14:52:38 cidaemon.exe:1644 IRP_MJ_CLOSE C:\ SUCCESS 10 14:52:39 cidaemon.exe:1644 IRP_MJ_CREATE C:\ SUCCESS Attributes: Any Options: Open Directory 11 14:52:39 cidaemon.exe:1644 IRP_MJ_CLEANUP C:\ SUCCESS 12 14:52:39 cidaemon.exe:1644 IRP_MJ_CLOSE C:\ SUCCESS 13 14:52:39 cidaemon.exe:1644 IRP_MJ_CREATE C:\ SUCCESS Attributes: Any Options: Open Directory 14 14:52:39 cidaemon.exe:1644 IRP_MJ_CLEANUP C:\ SUCCESS 15 14:52:39 cidaemon.exe:1644 IRP_MJ_CLOSE C:\ SUCCESS 16 14:52:39 cidaemon.exe:1644 IRP_MJ_CREATE C:\ SUCCESS Attributes: Any Options: Open Directory 17 14:52:39 cidaemon.exe:1644 IRP_MJ_CLEANUP C:\ SUCCESS 18 14:52:39 cidaemon.exe:1644 IRP_MJ_CLOSE C:\ SUCCESS 19 14:52:39 cidaemon.exe:1644 IRP_MJ_CREATE C:\ SUCCESS Attributes: Any Options: Open Directory 20 14:52:39 cidaemon.exe:1644 IRP_MJ_CLEANUP C:\ SUCCESS 21 14:52:39 cidaemon.exe:1644 IRP_MJ_CLOSE C:\ SUCCESS 22 14:52:39 cidaemon.exe:1644 IRP_MJ_CREATE C:\ SUCCESS Attributes: Any Options: Open Directory 23 14:52:39 cidaemon.exe:1644 IRP_MJ_CLEANUP C:\ SUCCESS 24 14:52:39 cidaemon.exe:1644 IRP_MJ_CLOSE C:\ SUCCESS 25 14:52:43 cidaemon.exe:1644 IRP_MJ_CREATE C:\ SUCCESS Attributes: Any Options: Open Directory 26 14:52:43 cidaemon.exe:1644 IRP_MJ_CLEANUP C:\ SUCCESS 27 14:52:43 cidaemon.exe:1644 IRP_MJ_CLOSE C:\ SUCCESS 28 14:52:43 cidaemon.exe:1644 IRP_MJ_CREATE C:\ SUCCESS Attributes: Any Options: Open Directory 29 14:52:43 cidaemon.exe:1644 IRP_MJ_CLEANUP C:\ SUCCESS 30 14:52:43 cidaemon.exe:1644 IRP_MJ_CLOSE C:\ SUCCESS 31 14:52:44 cidaemon.exe:1644 IRP_MJ_CREATE C:\ SUCCESS Attributes: Any Options: Open Directory 32 14:52:44 cidaemon.exe:1644 IRP_MJ_CLEANUP C:\ SUCCESS 33 14:52:44 cidaemon.exe:1644 IRP_MJ_CLOSE C:\ SUCCESS (and multiply this block by millions...) -------------------------------------------------------------------- Thanks for help, -Andrej

    When my computer starts...

Hello there! How can I start some proggy (ISDN Monitor) when my computers starts? I need to start it before anyone logs in... I found this useful function in Sheduled Tasks that task can start when my computer starts ("At system startup")... You must set under which user the task shuld start and so on... But it won't work for me... Everything looks okay, but proggy isn't running when I log in... It neither works if I place the proggy to my HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices... or other similar registry branches... Any idea how can I start this proggy with system startup? Any idea why Sheduled Tasks won't run the proggy? Thanks,

    Infected by a VIRUS...

Hello! I am runing Norton Antivirus 2002 on Windows XP and I had Disabled Auto Protect feature. So I get infected by a W32.Wierd(gen1) Virus. I tried to turn autoprotect ON, but it just generated some errors, so I reinstalled NAV2002... The autoprotect is now ON by default, and it works fine. But when I open NAV, to scan my disks, it generates some strange script errors... Okay... This is not what I am trying to ask... Can NAV2002 scan disk in Boot-time? Because I have infected some files, that are used by the system, so they can't be disinfected when the system is using them. I don't know how to fix those files... But if they can get infected, there is a way to disinfect them... So NAV works wery strange in this case... Is there any better Virus scaner? What shuld I use to solve my problem? Thanks for helping me,

    Infected by a VIRUS...

Thanks, freefaller6, I set back the Restore point creation feature... It was off before... so I was unable to do that... Hope it will save me in advance...
  15. Hello! Today I recived this error in my Dial-up properties window. Sice my restore points feature is not enabled, I really have no idea what to do. My system somehow works perfectly, so I am really not about to do a fresh install again... Please help me... And sorry for skinny interface... This error is reported to all connections. If I try to create a new one, it says: Unable to create the specified connection. This can be caused by insufficient memory or not enought disk space. (OK) My system: 20 GB IBM HDD@7200RPM, 1,5GB Free 512 MB RAM, ~300MB Free at average, nVidia, Intel PentiumIII EB @800 Mhz, RW, DVD, WinTV, 3com Network, USB ISDN Modem, Scanner (XP's built-in drivers), ... Thanks,

What happened to my Dial-up properties?

Thanks, Wolf87 your suggestion is very sensible... But somehow it won't work for me... Maybe I am doing something wrong. I removed all words 'Hide' in my ..\WINDOWS\inf\sysoc.inf file, saved it, and I removed and reinstalled all the components that may be in common with Internet: Indexing service, Explorer, IIS, Management and Monitoring, Message Queueing, Netwoeking Services, ... But I was unable to remove component named "WMI" (The Windows Management Instrumentation) - I unchecked the checkbox, clicked next, and finish, so it acted like the component was successfully removed, but if I went back to list of components, the checkbox appeard to be checked again... So I have no idea how to remove this component, and I think that only this components is the souce of my problems... Please help me...

    Infected by a VIRUS...

Thanks, mike3169... Well I am kinda familar with DOS command since DOS 3.3x... But on my system I use NTFS as my primary filesystem, so old good bootdisk wouldn't help me much... Okay I know, there are some NTFS readers for dos, but anyway I'd rather not use them since XP's NTFS differs a little from NT and Windows 2000's one... I deleted files you specified, because Norton Antivirus ignored them.. Hehe I feel better now... But I disinfected my system with trial version of PC-cillin 2000, and now I am using my NAV2002 again and it reported no more infectious files... I hope I can be carefree now... Thanks,

    svchost.exe tries to access Internet

Hello! Well what exactly is SVCHOST.EXE? At average I have about 4 instances of svchost running on my system... 2 are run by the system and 2 within my username... I feel strange about it... Thanks, -Andrej
  19. Hello... Windows 2000 Professional problem: A friend of mine told me about this problem and I have no idea what could it be: When he tries to estabilish Dial-UP connection (by clicing 'Dial') he gets an error message: ------------------------------------------------ Cannot delete saved password. Error 1305: The revision level is unknown. ------------------------------------------------ The connection then works normally but username and password are not saved as they shuld be because "Save password" is checked... Ii is very annoying entering uername and password and seeing the error message every single time you want to connect... Does anyone have any idea, any clue about what's wrong here? Thanks,

    xDSL & Windows XP

Hello. I would like Windows XP to load my xDSL connection before I log on to my computer. I need something like a system service to start the connection. How can I do that? Thanks,
  21. Hello. I found this on: http://www.xp-erience.org/sections.php?op=viewarticle&artid=14#Disa Uninstall windows messenger Microsoft has tried really hard to prevent you from uninstalling windows messenger. They failed to make it difficult enough because with the directions below you can get rid of messenger very easily. Navigate to C:\windows\inf Open sysoc.inf find msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7 in the file and take out the word hide so the line would look like msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,,7 Close the file and save it Now go to the Add and remove programs applet in the control panel and you will be able to uninstall windows messenger. Make sure to click on the add remove windows components button. Note: You will be able to uninstall other unneeded programs by removing hide from the sysoc.inf file as well. Have a nice day,
  22. Wasn't there some times ago a batch file that forced Windows Messenger to uninstall? But I started using it... besides ICQ... And - I like it
