    Can you recommend a program?

I have a client that requires me to draw out concepts of new vending display units. What I require is a simple to use program that would allow me to draw 3d drawings of the proposed cabinets or stage risers. I don't want to spend hours learning a complicated 3d cad program just a simple out of the box jump into it type of thing. Any recommendations? Thanks in advance Illusionist

I am trying to run a prog called Bootvis from MS . When I try to run a file, a window comes up that says, I need to have write permissions on my desktop folder in order for the analysis to perform it's task. I'm running XP home ( yeah I know it sucks but can't afford the update to pro right now ) . Any Ideas how to enable write permissions on my desktop? Thanx in advance

    Application prompt

I am logged on as admin and guest accounts are disabled. I'm starting to believe it has sometihng to do with the limited options in MS XP home. I followed your recommendations ( logged in as admin ) and there is no option to to setting the permissions for that folder nor for that matter any other folders I have tried. I'm stumped for now! Again I have the other systems running w2k pro and xp pro and they work fine ( including all boot times and sign ins ) but this Dell Xp home version seems to have serious limitations when your used to home built pro versions. Untill I can afford an upgrade to XP pro ( cause of the registration requirement for service packs and win update ) I think I'm pooched for now but any other suggestions would be welcome. Thanks again

Yes I am on a network of 5 computers running through a Linksys befsr41 cable/DSL router and a linksys ezxs55w 5 port workgroup switch. The reason the switch is added is because the router only has 4 ports and I have two other portables that I use on this network at various times. All other systems start up fine. Even the system that is having a slow start at initial boot , jumps to life quickly after signing in during a hibernation period. It's just darn slow from a morning boot or a restart. Thanks

It appears no one knows the answer to this question so I will ask another. I am running into a long boot up time. Running from 4min56 sec - 5min 06sec everytime I boot up. Does anyone know of another boot analyser prog that will trace all related boot events so I can see if a driver is having problems or an app or a network component. This boot time is driving me nuts. Thanks

    Monitor Hz

I've been OCing since the 486/33 and the bottom line is that if you want to OC an electronic device with top notch componentry then you can safely reach a 10 percent increase without any normal problems. If you were to run a Sony piece of equipment as opposed to a noname piece the quality of each componant is directly proportional to the price of the unit you payed for. In simple terms the larger companys run the R and D projects and install resisters and such to tolerate the voltage peaks and drops and then spec their products higher to accomadate customer satisfaction over longer periaods of time. The copy cats of the industry take the spec of the high end manufactures and reduce resister and such specs to the bare minimum and in turn lower the meen time life of the componant and can sell it for much less. The bottom line is that if you have a high end piece of equipment you stand a better chance of OC than if you have a lower end componant. ( if you have ever studied electronics there are always a +- 5-10% tolerace on each pice of componant and the total of the guts is limited to the weakest componant.) There is always a lower life expectance when going over tested specs. Sorry if that was a little too long winded. L8tr illusionist

    False Install @ Start Up

I had an istall of a plug in go wrong when I was installing a component from the office 2000 suite. The system hung up and then rebooted. I think it was a short power out that caused it. I reinstalled the needed component but noticed that when the system was coming back up there was a " installing Microsof Office setup" screen with an error message. I cancelled the install and went about my stuff. Now everytime I start up the system the install tries to go therough it's setup routine and ends up giving me the same error. How do I get rid of that startup program? Thanks in advance

    Making a boot disk

I apologise in advance if this tread is comewhere else in the forum but I could not find an answer. I have a neighbours IBM PII 350 that they got from work. It has win2k on it on a drive that is 3.2GB but partitioned into 2 , 1.5 GB drives. Right now the one drive is NTFS and the other fat. When they try to boot it gets to the windows desktop and a message saying explorer.exe has generated errors and must be shut down . At this point it keeps looping in the start sequence. There is nothing on either drive that they care to keep so I would like to fdisk and make it one partition.Reformat and reinstall OS. There is no way in the bios for changing boot sequences so that I can make it boot from the cd either. I can't figure out how to create a boot disk as the one I have is for fat 32 and if I try to fdisk it only recognises the fat partition. Any help would be great and I thank everyone in advance. L8tr

    Making a boot disk

Clutch Thank you for your response. I followed the link you provided and created the 4 required boot and startup disks as directed at the site. I did this on another system as It was not possible on the system in question. When the disks were complete I proceeded to start the other system up using the first disk and second and so on. Everything was coming up fine. The next step was not as obvious though as I could see not files in the 4 disks created that allowed for a format or Fdisk as I’ve been used to in regular boot disk operations. During the setup process there was an area that allowed me to setup win2k on the existing 2 partitions , delet the partitions or exit setup . I chose to delete both partitions. With that having been done I found myself in a bit of a bind as I could not format the new partition. After all else had failed I decided to shut down and boot with my win98 boot disk , which had fdisk and format commands on it. All drivers loaded and I proceeded to format the new single partition. Upon completion of the format I discovered I could not insert the win2k disk and ask to perform the “setup “ as the message came up “ this program cannot run in DOS” so I went through the process of rebooting and inserting each of the setup disks again. At this point I was given the option to setup win2k again and agreed to set this up on my single formatted partition. All went well and when the setup program said that there was no previous version to use for the upgrade it simply asked to remove the win2k cd and insert my win98 cd. I did this , it was recognized , and requested that I reinsert my win2k cd. All is well and the system is up again ( just going through the update process) but I again wanted to thank you and wanted to document my procedure so that if any other person was going through the same thing there would be an account of the procedure . I found it interesting in this case that I was able to use an upgrade disc to install as the only way that I have found previously to install a clean version from a update disc was to direct the install to look on another cd drive for a previous version. A $10 battery dammit!

Just a little note that might help someone else: Yesterday I came down to my comp and was trying to open a file a friend sent me for some brochures he had made but I couldn’t open the file in Corel 8. I called him and he suggested that I check if there were any updates from Corel that I had missed. I checked the site found the latest update and proceeded to install the service pack. As the screen came up stating “ Windows needs to restart” I clicked yes and the shut down started. Now the fun started after you would have expected the system to start up again NOTHING BUT BLACKSCREEN! Thought I had a hard lock. After about 2 min. I reset the system. Again nothing ; couldn’t even get to the bios. There was no beeps all the fans were running and I thought that I had hashed my bios somehow. A friend suggested that the power supply may have gone down during the shut down process and that I try to install a new one. Even though all the power seemed to be on and all fans in the power supply and all card fans were running we thought that there may have been an under power situation. So I did that and again nothing. I decided to shut the system down and piece by piece remove components. As I was down to just one stick of ram , that I had swapped to all available slots , and a video card still nothing. All power seemed ok but I still couldn’t get even a beep. So I tried to discharge the cmos. Still nothing. This is now about three hours later and after cleaning all the areas of the case, all components I thought that my cmos was toast and was contemplating a nice $500.00 upgrade for a motherboard and cpu. Not what I had expected when I started that morning. I was just about to go to the store and pick up the new components when I thought “Lets try a $10.00 new battery “ . Well I got the battery popped it in and to my amazement the system sprang to life. Slowly I got to the starting windows bar then to the desktop . I added each new component , went through the start and shut down each time until I was back to normal. At 4.5 hrs from start to finish I had solved the problem . The reason that I write this is so that if this was to happen to anyone else I suggest that you try the $10.00 battery first.

I emailed PC-cillon about the error I was getting and they sent me a reply saying that it is a prob that sometimes happens. They sent me a fix as the TSC.exe file was corrupt. unzipped, applied and everythings good again. Love flowers in the meadow lalalalala. Anyways everything is up and now if I could just get IE6 working properly life would be good. But that would be too much to ask for. L8tr:D

    A $10 battery dammit!

I tried to pu the battery back in after I had backed up all my files ( u know save games and what ) and sure enough the damn system went down again . I hate you for pushing me into this ..........lol. No problem though insanity i shut down and put my new battery back in and everything came back up and seems normal for 5 hours now. As a note I did not get any further than befor although this time I did have to go to the bios and set auto detect in the hd as the first boot did not go as straight forwrd as I suspected. In addition now when I rebbot I have a tsc.exe cant find local drive\ blada blada blad but that appears to be just something to do with pc-cillon . Anyways I do hate you now ( just kidding ) but I'm sure it's something simple with that error. L8tr

    A $10 battery dammit!

I forgot to ask you. You had mentioned that the new systeems are using a battery / capacitor in the system boards . If this is true then thats kind of a short sighted engineering flaw wouldn't you think. The reason that i'm saying this is that in a lenghty period of power out or say storage time wouldn't the capasitor discharge and in turn loss any information stored. Thanks again OLE L8tr

    A $10 battery dammit!

I'm certain that this was the battery as I took the battery out and then reinserted after I had finished the case and component cleaning. After I had removed it cleaned it and reinserted it ( as I have found that sometimes you can remove a battery and reinstall it cleaned and it will worrk due to possable poor contact) is when the system still would not boot let alone get to the bios that I realized that I should try to get a new battery before spending a wack of dooooohhhhh! It's the 3/4" flat battery maxell cr2032 3v hitachi Maxell LTD. Japan battery so there is no mistaking it . Btw this is an Abit BH6 board with a slot 1 700 p3 if anyone was wondering. Thats why I was saying that I'd have to put up 5 bones for a new board and cpu cause there are no slot 1 boards at the local retail levelunless u order them. I unfortunatly can't wait as the satelite systems were down and I needed to put out some new script to all the dealers fast. Anyways thanks for the reply. L8tr

    Printing in IE6

I have checked back to the last 100 days of posting and have not seen this question posted so if it has sorry but here it is. My dad asked me why he can no longer highlight text on a web page and print just the highlighted area. I tried this on my system and sure enough highlighting an area and sending to the printer prints the entire document. Other than copying the text that you require to a word proc and printing from there is there a simple setting that can be changed to allow highlighted areas only to be printed directly from a web sight? Thanx in advance.

    Printing in IE6

To answer your question first pbuckne the problem was present prior to the installation of IE6 and continues now. No new printers or drivers were installed during the time that he noticed he could no longer print.Thank you for your reply. Now to your answer xiven, this is the way that he normally tries to print and I have tried to print from both the toolbar and through the file tab and print. Thank you for your reply. Still no luck and I have noticed that all of my comps ( 4 in total ) do not allow the printing of any highlighted areas only after reading both of your replies. ie: went to diablo.net page , highlighted 1 paragraph on the home page and went to file & print and opened the printer to locate pages and file size. 7 pages were to be printed from the single highlighted paragraph. Needless to say thats not what I had intended on printing. Again thanks for both your replies and if anyone has another suggestion please feel free to reply. Thanks in advance.

    Passwords

Can some one answer this question? When you log into a site, ie: yahoosports and you sign up for a user name and password, windows comes up with a pop up box asking you if you would like windows to remember the password and in my case I tend to say yes. Now the question is where does windows store these passwords ? If I go up to the cottage and want to log into some sites I need the PW but since I always put in different addresses and names for seperate sites I can never answer the damn questions to retrieve my PW. I know what your going to say ; that I should write these things down but I dont', didn't and probably never will so , here I am. There must be a directory or file that stres all the PW so does anyone know where. Thank you in advance illusionist

    Passwords

Nemesis thanks for the reply. I was hoping to get a file that opens reveiling the username and password in like a text file. Again I was up at the cottage this past weekend and couldn't acsess my account from there so I couldn't change my sports picks . It ended up ok stilled tied for 1st in our group. Anyways if anyone else can help that would be great. Thanks in advance Illusionist
