    Desperate for your Assistance!

Here is the problem: I have acquired a Samsung MFP (4521FG) which comes with an installation CD. When I start the CD, the Setup.exe starts in a foreign European(?) language and presents me with choices I do not understand. I have verified in the Control Panel Applet 'Regional and Language Options' - they are set only for English (USA). This strange behaviour happened for another Install program as well in the last one month or so. The 'Text Services and Input Services' is also set for 'English (US)'. The OS is XP-SP2. I called Samsung and they have no clue. I have downloaded the same program as in the CD from Samsung Website and the result is the same. I suspect there is some entry in the Registry that forces this behaviour. I am desperate! Please help! TIA.

USB Device recognised but will not install

I have had similar problems with a WD MyBook USB Hard Drive. Go to http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/usb_devices_view.html and clear all the USB devices and boot again. Make a backup of your device drivers prior to that for any eventuality. Hopefully, this will resolve the problem. Please post back your results.

Converting "Dynamic" to "Basic" Hard Disk

I recently moved to VISTA Home Premium from W2KS and moved two of my disks to the new system. Unfortunately VISTA Premium is not capable of detecting "Dynamic" type of Hard Disks-only Ultimate can. If I want to convert to "Basic", VISTA warns me that I will loose all data in that process. Is there a utility that can convert to "Basic" type without loss of data, either in W2K or in Vista? TIA.

  5. Please advise on this issue: After a hard disk File Allocation Table failure, I reinstalled W2KServer on the drive c: without reformatting the drive. Everything works now, except that in the Documents and Settings, I find additional profiles such as Administrator.Mycomputer.000, Administrator.Mycomputer.001 etc in addition to Administrator.Mycomputer and some folder or other within these additional profiles are updated (by looking at the date stamp). I am the only one with Admin privileges and the only one who logs on to the system. I have thoroughly checked the system for viruses, spywares etc and the system is protected by McAfee and Webroot products all the time. What is going on in my system? Thank you.

Thank you very much for the two links - very valuable indeed.
  7. I noticed on the Vista box at the stores that the Upgrade works on W2K Professional. Is the upgrade possible on the Windows 2000 Server? Has anyone attempted it? Thanks for your input.

Windows 2000 Pro to Vista upgrade possible?

The box of Vista upgrade mentions that the Upgrade works on Windows 2000 Professional.
  9. Hi: I had to reinstall W2KS OS due to some problems of booting and it overwrote the regisry obviously. One particular program that has extensive customization does not run because the registry settings are missing. Unfortunately the program cannot be reinstalled as it is an old version that is not available anymore. A quick look at Documents/settings shows that all settings for the program are still existing on the server under an old Admin User called "Adminitrator" but the current (Adminstrative) user is "Administrator.NewAdmin". Also, using Regedit, I find that the program has several entries in various locations of the registry. My question is how to important all the relevant information for the old Admin account (for this particular program only) into the new Admin account so that I can run the program again. I wish to accomplish the task for this specific program only. Is there a utility that can accomplish this task easily? I am sure there are many Gurus here who have run into this problem. Many thanks.

    Help on DOS needed!

Hi, I have a website that runs of the CD that I distribute to clients. I have given a provision for the user to copy all the files to the user's hard disk and run from there. The link in the webpage calls up a dos batch file that looks like this: setup.bat ---------- md c:\Website xcopy *.* /h /s c:\Website del c:\Website\SETUP.BAT The problem is that the xcopy command sometimes copies the contents to the desktop. SO I need to substitute the drive letter of the CD Drive from where the batch file is run. Like xcopy [CD DriveLetter]:\*.* /h/s c:\Website How do I identify the Drive Letter of the CD Drive? It is a long time since I worked on DOS environment and I have forgotten variables substitution. Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

    Help on DOS needed!

DosFreak, Thanks for your reply - however, my question was how to identify the CD Rom Drive letter and NOT the Drive letter of the system where Windows is installed (%SYSTEMDRIVE% returns the drive where Windows is installed, isn't it?). Or am I missing something? Thanks again.

    What is this message?

I am putting together a new PC with Soyo Dragon2 2.0 MB and while the system is up and running, there is a motherboard monitor utility in a CD that came with the MB. While installing that utility, the install program terminates with the message "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT.The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS MS Windows Applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application". WTF is this message trying to tell? What needs to be done to install this MB Monitor program? I emailed SOYO but they have not responded. OS W2K Pro. CPU Athlon XP 3000+ with 1GB RAM. I know some of you are smarter than these manufacturers Thanks for your time.

Dosfreak, thanks to you - the problem is solved!
  14. Hi, I recently overhauled a good working home network and landed myself in trouble. Some wrong setting somewhere is preventing me to connect to a Client computer on the network. Linksys Router Windows 2000 Server (Call it computerS) Windows 2000 Pro Client (Call it computerC) Both belong to the same 'Workgroup' Problem: Each do not communicate with the other. MS Windows Network Message box says "Workgroup not accessible. The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available" Clicking "computers near me" on the Server lists the Client computer name, but double clicking the Client computers' name says "\\computerC is not accessible. The NW path not found" Clicking the "computers near me" on the Client DOES NOT list the Server name, but searching for the Server by name like \\ComputerS lists the Server in Workgroup but cannot access it. Linksys's DHCP Table lists both computers. Both computers can access Internet without any issues. Please help - it is driving me crazy! Many thanks in advance.
  15. Has anyone come across, in a major retail stores, 9.4GB DVR+/R media? I have not. Is there any reason why they are not available at all, while DL Writers are so abundant and cheap?
  16. I need to use something like Norton's Utility to disagnose some drive issues that I am facing with a system running W2K Server. I see that Norton System Works cannot run W2KS but only W2KProfessional. 1. Is there any possibility of installing and running Norton System Works (latest versions) on a W2KS? 2. Is there any other product, preferably freeware, that I can use to disagnose disk drives? Thanks for your time.

Which product to diagnose disk drive issues in W2KServer?

Thank you, AlecStarr for your reply. Yes, I am aware of and have used both the above recommendations. However, reverting back to my original two questions, do you have any specific answers? Is there anyway to make applications think that the OS is W2KPro rather than W2KS so that they won't quit the install process? Thank you.

    Sharing a scanner in W2K S?

Hi, I have a small home network with one Server (w2KS) and 3 PCs that share files and printers. No issues there. The server has a SCSI HP Scanner attached to it. Is it possible to share it with the other PCs(W2K Pro) over the LAN? Kindly advise how. Thank you.
  19. I am facing the following issue with a w2K Server with Abit KT7A-RAID mother board. The board has two I/O RAID ports controlled by High Point HPT370 chipset and two normal IDE ports. I installed W2KS on a 120GB HD after connecting it to the normal IDE port. No issues there. All ok. Then installed the HPT370 drivers and then moved the Hard disk cable to the KT7A-RAID IDE port. The BIOS for the High Point controller detects the disk and no issues on booting. However, when W2K starts, it comes up with a message "W2K cannot start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem. Cannot read from the selected boot disk. Check boot path and disk hardware. Check w2k documentation about hardware disk configuration". When the cable is put back into the standard IDE port, the disk is bootable. Where is this configuration information written? I have seen somewhere that there is a boot.ini file - is this the one? (I could not find this file in the boot drive). Can some W2K Server expert throw some light on this? Much obliged for your time.
  20. How to fool an application to think that the OS is W2KPro rather than W2KServer? I am trying to install a HP software that came with a DVD burner that would not install on a W2K Server. Thank you.
  21. Hi, Ever since I installed Adobe Creative Suite (CS), whenever I run Acrobat 6 professional while creating a PDF file through a Scanner, I get the following window: "Files that are required to run Windows properly, have been replaced by unrecognized versions. To maintain system stability, Windows must restore the original versions of these files. Insert your Windows 2000 CD now." Is there any reason why this is happening? Is there a way of knowing what files have been over written? TIA. OS: W2K Server with SP4.
