Am I the only one who thinks Win ME sucks?

How did I call myself an idiot? Just to let you know I always win in the end as well(with PC issues), persistance is the key, as well as a little common sense. I am chill, I was just asking a question. I wasn't able to tell who you were calling an idiot? I just didn't understand why it would be me. -Cheers -Moniker

    Problem with AD

Greets- I was wondering I'm having an issue with active directory and DNS. I have it working with third party DNS to the point of the DC announcing that it is the DC. The problem I seem to be running into now is when it begins to sync, a credentials dialog box appears and says [The operation failed because:Failed to modify the nessasary properties for the machine account MACHINE$] "Access is denied". It also asks to enter an account that has sufficent priviliges to create an additional DC. Well I am the admin and Ive tried all my other admin accounts. I cant seem to get it to show anything in the logs (and I ve created a test server to try this with logging everything I can think of). does anyone here have any suggestions, if I havent provided enough detail please just let me know and I'll provide what I can ------------------

I'm just wondering. Are you calling me an idiot JJ? I just want to know? I can see how getting windows to install without any complications gives you "mad skills" as you referred to them. The real question is could you get it to work with complications? Because, with all your flawless installs that you've performed, I imagine you've gained no useful experience other then pressing "next". Also if you were calling me an idiot I'd like to have a closer look at your immense amount of knowledge.

New FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions are out

I just use it for internal stuff so each department can have their own section on the internal website. It keeps them happy, and I dont have to do updates to every section once a week now. Which in turn makes me happy. I'll go try the link there again.

What are the differences do you know yet. The link seems to be broken for the top link that looks like it may explain them.

WinRAR not working in XP for me....

My whole issue was that, every time I see a post from one of these guys, it has nothing useful to say. I was just thinking that it was obvious the guy was asking for help, why not just help him. I usually don't jump on someone just to show them I'm smarter then they are, it's childish. I work with stupid end users all day as well, and, I still don't think I would have reacted that way. It's easy to see that all dark wanted was some help. I just don't see why they didn't offer is all. That is what I saw as an "elitist attitude". -Cheers -Moniker

    Maybe I'm blind but....

Does anyone have a link for the new patch for IE 5.01 5.5. I installed it on my machine last week, now I neeed it for my users. I want to get them patched today. I seemed to have misplaced the link I had. Thanks in advance, if I find it in the mean time I'll put it up here for the rest of you.

actually clutch what I'm really looking for is the IT version of that same download. Everyone I seem to get to just gives me the installer. I know its one of those ranging size downloads but, is there a location I can DL the whole thing. I just would like to avoid every person making a connection to the update.

Firewalls? hmm... who has actually ever been hacked?

-windows 2k by default- wingates- stepping stone to other systems enumerating shares- yes the little <20> that says hi I'm on. would you like to connect try IPC$ maybe I'm logged on as root(admin sorry) Dos Freak-nice makeshift DoS attack freak thats funny. That will definately slow down a 56k connection especially if its performed by someone withmore bandwidth(not uncommon) I would use a firewall box. Yep thats right the old 486 that nothing seems to work on anymore. Well guess what, Linux will still run fine with it, because they aren't in bed with the hardware manufacturers. So you run IPChains on it and remember deny everything first then start allowing. I will give it to whoever said you have less of a chance of being 'cracked' being on a dial up. Less doesn't mean never. although your range of IP's may be scanned less frequently because of the lack of juicy targets, what about all the little packet monkeys trying to figure out how to steal cc#'s, how to use wingates, etc. I mean I could go on all day about all the little things that go on. But at the end of it all I would still recommend at least zone alarm and a trojan scanner. Cheers- Moniker

Best Method of Resetting a Win2k system over Network?

there is 'rkill' as well. they also ported a ton of other *nix commands to 2000 you can also use. c:\>shutdown \\computer_name or C:\>shutdown and this will bring up a dialog box then you select the machine you want to shutdown. you can also select to reboot or perform a straight shutdown. If you need the resource kit I may be able to 'locate' you a copy cheers -Moniker

WinRAR not working in XP for me....

You are correct vampyr, he didn't specifically ask but, you could have said "I have it working here, what seems to be the problem?" Then, you provoke the information out of him\her. My whole point is, that people come here looking for advice. Maybe he\she doesn't know enough to ask a proper question. It's because, they don't understand it, so they are looking for your help. Why else would they post? I seriously doubt it was posted so it would give you something to troll. I'll give it to you that he\she didn't ask quite the way he\she should have. The thing is, you could have just said to him, "Hey I need more info to help you out any. Post an error of some sort, or, a log entry and I'll see if I can help." Or if you are super intent on acting like a jerk you could have said, "What do you think I'm a magician? Post an error of some sort so I can attempt to help you at least." and that could have gotten you your kicks just as much. This is all IMHO, of course. Now I don't want to start a flame war here. I just want you guys to know that not everyone has PC knowledge. Thats why they come here, for your help, not your ridicule. -Cheers -Moniker P.S. Darkangel you need to ask more detailed questions if you want anyone to be able to help you. [This message has been edited by Moniker (edited 31 March 2001).]

WinRAR not working in XP for me....

gee you guys are so helpful. Can I ask why you even bother posting, is it just to rub it in that its working. Don't you think that you could somehow help this guy out with some of your advice. Or, let me guess you just installed it to your machine and pointed and clicked on next to get it to work, and it happened to work so you think that you are somehow superior. Nice elitist attitude. I don't have XP installed on anything at the moment but maybe I can offer you some help. Explain what types of errors you are encountering. Cut and paste the text to here if you have to. Do you get through the entire install or does it puke somewhere in the middle? I need some details but I may be able to help you. jdulmage, vampyr - Just a quick question does the elitist attitude work to cover up your apparent incompetence? Because it doesn't work well here. Typical QA jackasses. You guys go ahead and let me know when you want to be schooled and I'll get in the short bus and come pick your retarded asses up. -Cheers -Moniker *********EDIT********* Oh ya just to let you know just because it says senior memeber under your 'nick' doesnt substitute knowledge. ------------------ [This message has been edited by Moniker (edited 31 March 2001).]

    Ok....wtf?

Brian- I didn't mean it that way I just meant that it is an easy install and it may not keep you occupied that long. If you want a real taste of *nix load a BSD or Debian. My whole point was really that if you get bored and want to learn something new that will keep a linuxnewbie busy for weeks Madrake was made for peole who havent used linux so it takes alot of the work out of it. Mandrake is a great OS its just that its the easiest
  24. Moniker

    Ok....wtf?

INFERNO-you want something to cure boredom. If you aren't very experienced with linux go grab a distro(something other then mandrake)and get it to run everything you do with your windows box. The reason I say dont use mandrake is not because it sucks but, because its the windows of the linux distros. It is super easy to install and configure so it wont keep you occupied that long.

    Ok....wtf?

do you hear the disk park. Then the system just hangs? If it does I forget what file is causing it but I believe in service pack 1 that was fixed. I assume you already have SP1 installed. Does this only happen in a soft boot or a hard power cycle as well? I dont know...I would disable all the power management #crap(set everything to never). disable any BIOS power management. Also I would install it with FAT first the use the command line conversion tool after you get it up and running. *******edit******* I generally encourage to complete the conversion to NTFS after your first successful boot. My reasoning is you can still navigate to anything you want with a 98 boot disk once its NTFS it wont find the drive . The best way IMHO is to setup a small boot partition formatted with FAT then for all data storage have another partition with NTFS. [This message has been edited by Moniker (edited 30 March 2001).]
