    Kazaa and my ISP

OK this really doesnt have anythign to do with XP or 2k but someone in here might have an answer for me. I have been running kazaa for about 6 months now. I have verizon dsl with first step as my ISP. Up untill abtou 2 weeks ago I was able to find files with all sorts of bandwidths and was able to download at incredible speeds. Then all of a sudden it was like Kazaa hit a brick wall. IT wouldnt find any bandwidths over 79 and everydownload is very very slow. It sometimes would take 2 hours to download an mp3. Anyway after thinking I did something to kazaa I finally came to the conclusion that my ISP is limiting the bandwidth on the ports that kazaa uses (1214). So I used a proxy server to change it to 1080. That still didnt work. So now I just got kazaa 2 and used the internal controls to change the port to a web port (80, 8000, 8080) but I still get the same things. I now have decided that my ISP is recognizing the packets and slowing them down (is this even posible) Anyway, does anyone know of a way to fool my ISP into thinking that kazaa is a web based program and to let it go?

    Multipe loads of svchost.exe?

Should XP load mutiple svchost.exe? There are 4 of them. 1 for Network service 1 for local service and 2 for the system. Should there be 2 system ones open or is that wrong? One is using 1.2mb and the other is using 6.7.

CPU usage always at least 10%

---EDIT--- OK further dectective work has shined a little light on the problem. I turned the refresh frequency of the Task manager to high. Now the CPU usage goes from 2% to 20% then back again about every second. This seems very strage. I looked on the knowledge base and it gave me this article http://support.microsoft.com/search/preview.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q276465, that dealt with High CPU Utilization Occurs with Windows Media Monitor Service. It said that someone might be sending a buch of garbage that would cause the spu utilization to be high. It gave an command to run under CMD that would list all or the active connections. I have 7 active connections. You wold think that if this was the problem that this attack and CPU usage would stop when I unplug the lan cable but it doesnt. So now I am back at square one unless I an wrong. Just recently I started to get stuttering and skipps in my video. I have a radeon 8500 and I thought that the card was making the skipping problem. I analyzed my xp setup and the directx logs that I made and still I found no problems with the video card. I even tried almost every driver for it but still nothing, untill one day. I was just messing around with a friend online and he asked what processes where taking up CPU usage. I told him that system and system idle process where taking up that most time. then I told him that after watching the cpu meter for a couple of min of no activity that the usage nver got below 10%. He said that this was very weird because his XP when in idle only ran at most 3% usage. He also said that this was very weird for my chip, and XP 1700 because it is so powerfull. So we started talking about what could be wrong. We came up with the idea that it was a trojan that was doing stuff with the cpu. I decided to do a fresh install. After, getting XP up and running again that problem is still there. The CPU usage never drops below 10%. So I have no clue as to what to do now. I know that it hasnt always been like this becasue I remember my CPU usage being around 3%. So if anyone has any suggestions, please send them my way. Netscape 7 Question

Does anyone know how to make web pages in netscape 7 scroll smooth like they do in IE? Right now it is really choppy when I scroll and it is screwing my eyes up.

    Netscape 7 Question

Well I found a mouse scroll section in the prefs of netscape but there is no smoothing option like IE has. I also looked for that file you said it might be in but the only thing I could find was a security file. I guess I will keep looking till I find somthing.
  6. WEll it has been some time but my buddy the javascript pop-up problem is back on his resting spot on my back. I am havng a problem with javascript and pop-up windows (the kind of pop-ups that you want). Anyway, when I go here http://www.planetphotoshop.com/tutorials_effects.html and click on one of the tutorials I get.........nothing. No pop up.....nothing. I make sure that Zone Alarm and my Popup blocker are both off before I know im going to try it. Im running XP pro SP1 with IE 6 SP1. As a matter of fact....this started after I installed the SP's. Hmmm I will try to uninstall IE SP1 and see if that works. But in the mean time can anyone give ma a hand if they know a little abotu javascript. Thanks

Javascript problem that no one can figure out

Well i tried setting all the security zones to defalt but that didnt work. And I do run a pop-up blocker but for right now I dont have it running. So that is all I can tell you for now. I have checked though the Microsoft databases and cant find anything that deals with my problem.

Program to large to run in memory!!!

I have a question about opening up a file. It is a an application with a dos icon and is 238mb large. When I try to run it, Im assuming it will extract what is in it, I get a message in the cmd window that says the file is too larger to run in memory. Is there anyway I can get past this and into this file? I am running XP Pro (sp1) and have 512mb or memory.

    Kazaa and my ISP

All other forms of internet work at very fast dsl speeds. (I have not tried newgroups) I just want to be able to make my ISP thing that Kazaa is a web program so it will let it pass. I have tried kazaa on my other computers on my network and they show the same signs and I have tried on friends computers with the same DSL and ISP and they show the same sign also. I would understand about it if they had told me they were going to do this but they said nothing. I also beleive that I am paying for access to the internet and should be able to use whatever part of the internet I want from web surfing to P2P, I am payihng for it!!!

    Disappearing CD-Drive

OK, I have a weird one here. I was installing Norton Systemworks on a work computer and right in the middle of it the CD drive disappeared!!!. It poped up with a message saying to put the cd back in the drive. XP doesnt even see it nor does the bios. I have tried taking another cd drive and putting that one in but it isnt seen either. The computer is a 350mhz with 192 mb of ram. I know that the cd had worked before because I installed XP using it. Any suggestions on how to get the drive back would be good.

    Disappearing CD-Drive

Thanks for the help but that link didnt have any information for me. I have heard of this problem before but I cant remember how to solve it. Even the bios dont show the secondary channel as being there. I think that I am going to reinitialize the bios with the cmos jumper. Thanks again for your help AlecStaar
  13. when I open up Task Manager I have an Image Name of "system" that is constanly fluxing the CPU usage from 0% to 20%. I would like to know if there is a program that will tell me what exactly is causing "system" to use the cpu like this?

A way to find out what is actually calling CPU space

I originally thought that some of these could be the lil' bastard that was doing this but when I did a fresh install with no software loaded and nothing but a mouse a keyboard a harddrive and a video card it still was there, even from the first time I booted into windows. The first thing I did was check the task manager.

A way to find out what is actually calling CPU space

Nope, no spyware. Just ran Ad-aware. There must be some way to find out what is really running. The stupid task manager just says "system". I checked my girlfriends XP (same one) and it only gets as high as 3% in idle.

A way to find out what is actually calling CPU space

I have taken my computer off the network too see if that was it but it wansnt. This problem isnt just for a little bit of time then it stops. I have watched it flux like this for about 30 min. It keeps going on and on untill I use the computer.

CPU usage always at least 10%

OK, this is what I did to try to figure out what was causing my CPu flux problem. I isolated every piece of my system down to the seperate sticks of ram and it does it with every piece of hardware I have. I even changed the harddrive that XP was on to see if that was it but nope. So now I am going to take Sampsons advise and flash the bios for my board. Im not sure if this will help but Im going to try anyway. I still dont understand why this problem would occur just out of the blue. I will let you guys know what happens.

CPU usage always at least 10%

Well my SBlive and my 3com and my video card are all using the same IRQ, #11> If I changed the position of the sblive you think that it will grab another IRQ?

    Wireless Networking help

OK here is my deal. I have a d-link wireless router that allows 4 computers to connect to my 1.5mb DSL connection. Right now I am using a d-link wireless usb device to connect my laptop wich resides about 50 feet (straight shot) from my router. The signal goes from up stairs to downstars passing through no more than 2 walls and the floor. My signal strength is anywhere from 30% to 44%. My problem is that the laptop internet connection is very slow. I would say that it is no faster than dial-up. Would this be due to my poop signal quality (evethough the dlink software says that 45% is good). also does anyone know anything that will help boost my signal strangth so I can get faster internet to my laptop? Another problem that I am having is that my XP pro seems to think that my wireless internet connection is not availible even though I am using it right now. (It says this through the icon that pops up in the task bar. Does anyone know why XP would think that it isnt available when it really is? I am using the latest D-link drivers for XP so I assueme that they should work right.
  20. Right now I have a dual boot system with XP and linux. I have found out that linux is not the thing for me and now I want to get rid of it. The only problem is that when I erase the partition it is on my boot for XP is gone and it does nothing when I turn on the computer. It will detect the IDE stuff but when it comes time to boot a OS it just sits there. I got around this by reinstalling linux and now I can boot to either one but I really want linux off my system. Does anyone know how to do this without screwing XP?
  21. OK I had a dual boot with linux mandrake and XP going for a couple of days. I erased linux and its partitions and now I cant get into xp. I can onlt get as far as right after my system checks to see if it should boot from the floppy and cd. Then it just stops with LI as the last line of text. I had tried repairing it with the cd but that doesnt work. The linux partition was on a seperate hardrive from XP so I know I didnt touch anything in XP. The only thing I can thing of is after I erased linux from the harddrive I still got the linux boot screen asking me what OS I wanted to start, linux of XP. Then I secure erased the partition and my problem started. Any ideas? I think that somehting with the boot portion of XP is affected.
  22. Any one know how to make XP quit saying that message that people are logged on when you shut down from the login screen, or when people are really logged on?
  23. Well from just looking at your hardware I cant see any thing that would cause it to act the way it is. Since you need the computer up ASAP I would just go ahead and do a "FRESH" instal. Dump everything related to windows. It doesnt sound like it but doing this will save you a bunch of time.

    ATI or NVIDIA

I have owned a Geforce2 GTS and a Radeon 8500(current). I would say that the driver support from Nvidia is much better than ATI. I have read about some problems with the 8500 in XP but have never seen any my self that werent or couldnt be fixed with updated drivers. As far as performance goes. Just look at it this way. The Geforce3 chip is at the end of the line. I dont think much more performance is going to be squezed from it. But on other hand the 8500 still has a lot of growing to do. That is all I can tell you right now. Just remember that it is only a video card and unless you are going to be a supper oc'er then you will forget about it about a week after you get it. BTW - dont forget about the new Nvidia Chip.

    Comanche4 and XP Problems

I just put Comanch4 on my XP Box. It works but runs really crappy. It is choppy and really hard to play. My system is an XP 1700+ with 512 2400 ddr and a radeon 8500. Latest drivers for the radeon, latestdrivers for my via chipset, latest updates for XP pro. Anyone else experience this problem? I have also put it on a lesser computer with 2000 pro and it runs fine.
