Can Win 2000 be used as a file server?

I am running a peer to peer network. If I get the 2K server, do you think that it will meet my needs as far as the individual security issues go? We have an 'old' copy of NT4 Server with 4 licenses that was used on our accounting server before we brought in an entirely new system. Can I use this or would it be better to get 2K Server? Or XP for that matter? I don't want to have to replace the OS again in the next year or so because I have read that NT4 support is being shelved in the next year. Thanks.....
  2. I have a group of clients (20) that use a Win 98 machine as a file server. They also run Win98. I want to increase security for the system at a minimal cost. I want to install Win 2000 Professional on the file server and create user accounts for all of the clients. That way I can control who sees what and who has access to any given folder depending on their user name and password. Is this the way to go? Does Win 2000 Pro have a user number limitation? Should I use XP Professional instead? Thanks to anone who can advise me on this...

    Folder shares between users

I have a server running NT4 with 4 users running Win98. I need to share "Joe's" private$ directory on the server with "Bob". I tried adding a permission to Joe's directory with access available to Bob but I cannot see the share from Bob's PC. I am not sure what I am doing wrong here. Thanks for any Help!

  6. Help! Whenever I leave a DVD in the drive (Lite-On), the system bogs down. It seems to relate to the disk spinning up, yet I am not using the drive. Task Manager does not show anything out of the ordinary. 900MHz T-Bird, 384MB, Win2k, Lite-on 6x DVD, Lite-on CDRW Thanks for any help!

I am running win2k with 384MB RAM. What size should I have my Page file set to? Currently it is set at 684MB. I thought it should not need to be that big. Any suggestions? Thanks...

    ASUS A7V Motherboard & Win2K

I have a dual boot Win ME/Win2K 900 AMD Athlon on an ASUS A7V Motherboard. It has the Promise Ultra DMA66/100 option. If I switch the ribbon cables to the DMA 100 connectors, Win ME works OK but Win2K won't boot up. I know that obviously Win2K is more hardware sensitive. Does anyone know how I can get Win2K to work with this, short of reinstalling Win2k? I have the recovery console installed but not sure what I need to do. Any help would be appreciated!! Thanks, TT

    Win2K crashing

Sorry, it has been occuring since I purchased the computer in November. It could be the DVD drive because when I open up MY Computer, it takes a few seconds to see everything after the DVD drive. I have my doubts on this because the drive is new and ran fine in my old PC.

    Win2K crashing

I'm running a 900MHz Athlon with Win2k and WinMe dual booting. I am getting a random freezeup that I cannot relate to any specific app. It happens in both OS's, and is totally random. In 2K, there is no event written to the log so no help there. I run NAV2001, Zonealarm Pro, 1 Cd burner and a DVD drive. No relevance to crashes with these applications. HELP!!
