    Win2k + Soundblaster + NIC + ACPI = studdering

It was the network card!!! I guess that Linksys's technology is not able to withstand the test of time. I bought the network card in 1995 to play Duke Nukem 3d over a network between two computers... I loved that network card. It accepted either type of network connection and up until Windows 2000 it performed quite admirably. So 6 years later the end of its reign hath come and it is being replaced by a newer younger faster NIC card. Thanks everyone for your suggestions.

    Win2k + Soundblaster + NIC + ACPI = studdering

Your not the first person to tell me to try another NIC card. I just so happen to have a "Realtek Fast blah blah blah" NIC card in the wings... I will try that. Also the install tech broke my soundcard recently and so I MAY be getting a new soundcard. If not they are going to replace it with a Live VAlue MP3, but if they dont replace it and just give me the money then I will probably get the Hercules XP card. I will try the new NIC card and let you know if that does anything but I would have to think not... Just FYI- Windows 98 fastest SUSTAINED download speed is 348 kb/sec and that is with www.speedguide.com registry patches installed. Windows2k fastest SUSTAINED download speed is 584 kb/sec and that is WITHOUT any tweaking. YOU THINK THE FASTER BANDWITH IS THE PROBLEM?

    Win2k + Soundblaster + NIC + ACPI = studdering

Well it has been quite awhile since I have looked at this topic... Acutally what I ended up doing was reverting back to Win98. I had no jittering problems while in that OS. Yesterday I installed Win2k in "standard PC" mode and setup the internet and lo and behold the problems reappeared. This is a full 3 - 4 months later. Just goes to show that history repeats itself. So here I am once again in Windows2k with the same equipment and the same problem. All newer drivers installed and still get the soundcard jitters and system hangs (3 secs long, 10 secs apart ONLY WHEN DOWNLOADING) Also I noticed that when webpages load it will pause for a split second. I am now in a dual boot config so I went to 98 and opened 11 Windows Explorer pages, 15 Internet explorer pages, played an mp3 and downloaded 3 seperate files at the same time and the system never once paused for any amount of time. WHAT GIVES! ANy new ideas besides trying to setup the PC as Standard PC....

Via 4n1's 4.32 Final and Nero 5.5... One or the other?

My friend has an Athlon based system and has the 4.32's installed with Nero 5.5 He pointed me to the upgrade patch for Nero that takes it to 5.22.4 or something like that, and so once again I formatted and followed his method of installation which was; OS first SP2 next and Via third... Upon installation of Nero I rebooted and did not attempt to open the program, I installed the update, rebooted once more and opened the program UNSUCCESFULLY. I dont seen how it can work on his and not mine, the only difference is AMD vrs Intel K266 vrs Asus P3v4x Non-dual boot config vrs Dual boot config... I read in another tread of a way to turn off the de-bugging feature in Win2k. I am at work right now but I will try that when I get home, because after it hangs I try to close it via task manager and it says it wont close and is being debugged... WTF ;(

Via 4n1's 4.32 Final and Nero 5.5... One or the other?

#1) Because we are newbies in the Networking realm #2) Because I dont want to hear him whining about getting fragged because his system is slower in 98 (Direct 3d) than mine in Win2k (OpenGL). #3) Because I didnt know I could do that which ties into #1 Why dont you use the 4n1's? For me it seems to do the trick of up'ing system speed ESPECIALLY in terms of the AGP driver...
  7. Via 4 n 1 drivers and Nero 5.5 - One or the other??? Well I have run Win98SE and Win2k previously without a hitch in terms of system stability UNTIL NOW! Friend came over the other day and says how about a LAN party? Fine I say, but I have Win2k loaded and you have Win98SE... So he reformats and we play till our eyes bulge with pain. Next day I wake up and think "hey if I can dual boot the PC I can avoid having to wait an hour while my friends (or I) have to reformat." So then the story begins... I fdisk the drive set a partition of 2.5 gigs for Win98 and 7.xx for Win2k (Havent upgraded the hd yet! ) I load Win98 and then load win2k. I choose to install Win2k as a Standard PC and skip all that ACPI crap. I get into Win2k and start installing software. Here is the order that I have been installing software in for the last few months; OS Via 4 n 1's (whatever version is the latest at that certain time) Soundcard Drivers (Liveware 3.0) Direct X 8 Video card Drivers SP 2 (used to install SP1 and a load of patches) Nero 5.5 etc... Well the above formula had previously worked with the 4.29 4n1's but I cant seem to get the setup to work when using the 4.32 final. Once I install Nero it first tells me that the installer on my PC is an older version (which totally pisses me off, this is Win2k SP2 for cripes sake ) and then I install the burning ROM and it reboots. Upon opening the program for the first time I get a hardrive light that stays on forever and the program locks on the Banner screen... I have to do a reset and then uninstall Nero and try again, same results So I finally uninstalled Nero and unistalled the Via PCI driver from the 4.32 4n1's. I then installed Nero and it works!!! So then after that I install the 4.32's and it doesnt work any more... WTF! I have reformatted this rig 5 times and each time I have changed the order of the above software install and I get the same result each time... Then on some final despiration attempts yesterday I installed the OS and then the first thing I installed was Nero. It opens the program fine, etc. THen the very next thing I installed was 4.32 and it hangs on the installation of that! And then when I reboot Nero wont open!l lksjdflkjsdflkjs To Humor myself, I reformatted once more and this time I installed the older 4.29's and Nero. IT WONT OPEN! This configuration of drivers used to work and now it doesnt... I am completely bummed by this string of events.... Lets not forget that another new variable in the mix is the fact that I have a dual boot system setup, Seems that everytime I reformatted the Win2k partition the hd would be mapped to a different drive letter. For instance on the initial dual boot installation the drive for win2k was D and on the last reformat and clean install the drive was F. I am chalking this up to Microsoft but could it be causing an issue??? Oh well your help is much appreciated. Installing Take Two with the new updates from Roxio

Wolf, thanks... I KNOW that it is supposed to work. I am just trying to determine the best way of "getting" it to work. For instance if I install Easy 5 with Take Two then the BSOD will appear and the installation will be corrupt. But If I install it custom and then apply the patch and then install Take Two it should not give me the BSOD... I was more or less thinking aloud about the install when I started this thread and I was hoping that somebody had gone through those steps that I laid out, but it looks as though I may just be the guinea pig of the group... I am not reformating till next Friday so there is still time for someone to post an easier way to install then the one above. Later
  9. Ok here is my initial plan: Do a fresh install of Win2k Install Easy CD 5 (custom) and choose to NOT install Take Two software. After sucessful install I will apply the update to 5.01 Then I will put the install disc back in and install Take Two. Before running Take Two I will install the 1.03 patch that adds Win2k support, after reboot I will install the 1.03e patch for the hell of it... So what do you guys/gals think? This the most streamlined way to do it? HOPEFULLY after all that work i can run Take Two and create an Image so that I never have to do it again... You thoughts and opinions are appreciated
  10. Ok I am reading the OS tweaks off of 3dSpotlight website and I have a question regarding Initial and Max Pagefile settings... First and foremost I am tweaking the registry because I am trying to get my system to work properly, I have setup another thread on this forum regarding the problem that I am having when downloading files (off of cable modem and maxing out my bandwith) and playing MP3 files... It studders often and I cant figure out why. My system should have more than enough processing power and Ram and I dont recall having these problems in 98SE. Ok so I have enabled ATA 66 and setup everything possible EXCLUDING setting a value for my pagefile. Lastnight while playing UT on a server with about 16 other people the game would studder hard and I would get killed during this time. I was highly frustrated that the tweaks didnt solve the problem... MY QUESTION is in reference to the contents of this link: http://www.3dspotlight.com/tweaks/memory-win2k/memory-4.shtml I have performed the steps neccesary and my calculations reveal that I "should" set my initial page file to 11 megs and my max page file size to "double that amount just in case"... ISNT THIS RATHER LOW COMPARED WITH THE DEFAULT OF 384 for initial and 768 for max??? Your suggestions and thoughts are greatly appreciated. System Info] P-III 600 EB (somehow running at 676 @ 150 FSB ) BTW the system still studdered at 133 FSB which is default for the processor. 256 Megs of Crucial CAS 2 32 Meg Geforce 2 GTS (leadtek) Detonator 6.5 and Direct X 8.0a 10 Gig 7200 RPM Maxtor Ata-66 HD SB LIve Value Linksys Ether PCI Combo card (this card I bought in 1997 with a network kit for Duke3d) Toshiba PCX1100U cable modem 300 watt power supply and ample cooling Winamp for MP3 playback HEY I JUST THOUGHT OF SOMETHING... Since the default speed of my CPU is 133 FSB that equates to a slightly higher speed for PCI devices... Is it possible that the age of my network card makes it "unable" to sustain optimal performance at a higher (more taxing) speed. The problem DOES NOT become worse at 150 FSB ~ 37.XX MHz PCI speed... So this makes me think that its not a possible cause... SORRY TO BE SO LONG WINDED BUT I FIGURE MORE INFORMATION IS BETTER THEN LESS!

    Win2k + Soundblaster + NIC + ACPI = studdering

Eddie, Already running the 4.29 4 in 1's Dos, Most recent Bios is installed and running... What merit do you give to the comment; "Making your PC a standard machine actually does more harm then letting ACPI take care of the IRQs" I have frequently read that ACPI is benificial for Win2k users and that when you choose to make your PC a "standard" setup it may not be using the full resource allocation benefits of Win2k... Just want to get yours or anyone elses insight on that matter. Well lets say that I change the card to another slot, that isnt going to cause conflicts elsewhere is it? Or is that why we "play the game"... Because nobody truely knows what Win2k will decide to do! I just dont want to put the card in another slot and have Win2k keep it on Irq 9... What do you think? I wont have to reinstall the drivers will I? [This message has been edited by Bennybone (edited 20 March 2001).]
  12. I just did a fresh install of Win 2k and I have the most current drivers for the system all the way around. ACPI is enabled and the soundcard and NIC are sharing IRQ 9. I was listening to MP3's and downloading some at the same time (pushing the modem very hard) and randomly the system will studder and it last about 2 secs and then continues to go about its business... Wouldnt bother me except for the fact that it does it quite often. Does the same thing during all my online games... Causes frags that I shouldnt be giving up 8) So your thought and suggestions are greatly appreciated. BTW it NEVER did this in 98SE... Easy Cd Creator 5 ERROR!!!! Need your brainpower!

Ok the disc that I made using Direct CD 3.01 in Win98SE worked in Win2k WITHOUT having to add an ASPI layer or UDF reader. I installed Easy Cd Creator 5 off of that backup disc and you guessed it I can now read the discs that I created using the program in 98. WHAT A PAIN IN THE REAR! I have convinced myself that I will keep this program only if I can burn it and have it setup so that I can install the program directly after installing the OS (another words as if it were a retail version...) Thank to all of you for your suggestions and WOLF for all of those links, made for some interesting reading! Ok off to tweak Win2k! Peace out

Easy cd creator 5 vs Nero 5.5

I'd be interested to know how people with Nero 5 make there CD Labels and stuff like that. BTW lets say that a person like me has been using Easy CD Creator for quite some time and has made all sorts of backup discs on CD-R's (MP3 files). If I wanted to switch to Nero would I have full access to my backups or would they have to be re-recorded? BTW I read the post about the review of Nero 5.5 and I noticed the Cd cover and label designer!!! Looks sweet and I believe that I will be "converting" to Nero and dumping Roxio without ever coming back. [This message has been edited by Bennybone (edited 17 March 2001).]

Easy Cd Creator 5 ERROR!!!! Need your brainpower!

Ok here we go, I went back to 98SE yesterday and I installed ESCD 5 and this time I paid CLOSE attention to what I was doing. I made a backup using DCD 5 and I unchecked the option to save it as a UDF 1.5 (thinking that Win2k isnt capable of that) and so then I chose to save it as ISSO mode 2 (readable in all CD-roms). So I reformat AGAIN lastnight (this makes 4 reformats in 2 days if anyone is counting) and when I get into 2k I install the "latest" UDF reader from Roxio (JUST IN CASE) and I click on the Cd-rom and get the same error! And get this Win2k is showing the properties on the disk to be UDF but after I installed Nero 5.0.4.4 it shows me that it is in ISSO mode 2. Anyhow Nero wont have anything to do with the CD, it wont open the track or even erase the contents... So I reformatted again (I dont have alot of time on my hands, I just sacrifice sleep and sanity) back to Win98SE and this morning I installed the old version of Adaptec 4.02c but then that instal hosed up yet Direct CD 3.01 was working so I made another backup using that version of Direct CD. THE PLAN WHEN I GET HOME TONIGHT IS> Close the disk on the backup I just made using DCD 3.01 as a CD that is readable in all drives. I believe that is ISO, but I am confused at this point. Then Install Nero 5.0.4.4 and make a backup using that proggie. I have never made a backup with that software so your hints on what format to burn it in would be helpful. ~~~~~~~BY THE WAY I AM USING CD-R MEDIA AND NOT CD-RW.~~~~~ Ok Wolf your comments have prompted me to ask the following questions. Lets say that I finally get the disc to read and I am able to install ESCD 5 and go about my merry routine. Are you saying that I will be unable to load the following: "Remove Take Two software from EZCD 5. Remove anti-virus, Norton Utilities and Undelete." The Take Two feature was one of the main reasons why I "acquired" this program and if it is unusable in 2k then I may as well go over to Nero... And THC: ""i have had no problems with directCD 5 in 2k at all. The only problem is the UDF layer that directCD 5 uses is different than all other versions but for some reason doesnt auto-install like the old versions did. You just need to get the latest UDF reader from adaptec to make 2k read CDs formatted in DirectCD 5 when it is not installed. I had a similar problem in whistler since it doesnt like directCD 5 much. "" This was my exact mentatlity and so lastnight I downloaded the latest UDF reader 1.03 from here http://www.roxio.com/en/support/filelist.html And after I installed it I tried to access the disks and It gave me the "not formatted error". I am truely interested to know if Nero 5 is going to have a feature that will allow me to image the OS on my computer (much like Take Two)... If this is so then I might just drop this headache and burn the backup in 98SE using Nero and go about my business... Or would I get the same error? I HATE TO BE LONGWINDED BUT THAT JUST REMINDED ME OF SOMETHING. My intent is to have 1 backup disk that has all my install files on it. I would for example do a fresh install of WIN2K and then simply insert the backup I made into my standard cd-rom and start installing all my stuff. Is Win2k not apt to handle this type of thing?
