  1. Greetings. I just purchased an HP Pavilion 4420 laptop today. I also bought a generic Wireless 802.11b PC card for it. When I got home I fired it up, went through the process of getting everything setup, and ran into some issues with the wireless connection. I got the drivers properly installed for the wireless card, and it could see my access point router, but could not connect. It would continously tell me there was a wireless network I could connect to - I would select the network and tell it to connect, but no joy, it kept on popping back up about the network that was available. I called tech support for the card - they said it was a bad card and to bring it back to the store - so I did. I picked up a Linksys card this time, brought it home and the same thing continued to happen. I did a full restore from the HP CDs, and the same thing happened again with the Linksys card after installing the drivers. At about this time I was getting irritated, so I did a reformat for the drive and installed XP from scratch. First thing I installed was the wireless - BINGO, IT WORKED!!! Next thing I installed was the driver for the LAN port in the laptop - I was replacing the WinXP default driver for it with the HP provided one from their website. BOOM - the problem was back immediately after my first reboot. What's up with that? Anyone else run into any similiar issues? I just finished reloading XP again, and I am NOT going to install that damned driver from HP this time. Can someone provide some insight as to what's happening here? Thanks! Devildog

    Netbeui with RAS/DUN

Good evening. One of my co-workers is running XP on his workstation here at the office. We use both TCPIP and Netbeui with RAS/DUN to dial into some systems that we maintain. He has successfully installed NetBeui from the XP CD, however, we are unable to figure out how to bing the NetBeui protocol to the dial-up adapter. It is not listed as an available protocol in the networking tab of a dialup connection. Anyone have any ideas? or is he just S.O.L ? Thanks in advance, Devildog.

    Office XP and Windows XP

Hey guys, Figured this might fit right in with your thread. Ever since I installed Office XP, I run into problems if one of the messages on the server has an attachment. If one of the messages has an attachment, the following happens. 1)All messages that came into mail server prior to the one with the attachment come in. 2)Using DU Meter, I can see some of the attachment download, but then it stops (gets further along with larger attachments). 3)After waiting a few minutes, I then get a message that pops up saying that connection with the server was lost. 4)If I restart Outlook, the same messages that downloaded before download again as if they were never pulled down before. 5)Same cycle starts all over again. I was thinking this may have something to do with my Norton AV 2002, so I uninstalled it completely then rebooted, then tried my email again - same problem. Next, I tried using Outlook Express 6 - same results. I then downloaded Incredimail and installed - same damned thing. I can access the email normally from RoadRunner's webmail service, as well as from another machine on my home network, just not this one!!! Reinstalling Norton all over again obviously didnt make any change either... I have also tried doing a REPAIR for Office XP, didnt help one lick. Everything worked perfectly under Outlook 2000 as well as under Outlook Express 6 prior to putting in Office XP. Next step, I uninstalled Office XP, then reinstalled Outlook 2000 - no joy. I then reinstalled ALL of Office 2000, same thing. At this point I am not trying anything else, the real shame is , I may have to reload my entire OS and blow away over 48 gigs worth of stuff I have installed because of this junk office suite. Anyone have any suggestions???
  5. Sun StarOffice 6.0 Beta is now available for free download (as will be the final release when it comes out). This version works well under build 2600 of XP Pro. You can download it at http://www.sun.com/staroffice/6.0beta/ Enjoy!

    Star Office 5.2 for Windows

Has anyone been able to install Sun's Star Office 5.2 under WinXP? I attempt to run the setup file and BOOM - the program dies immediately and asks if I want to send an error report.. Sounds like MS put in some SPF 50 "SUN-block" . Let me know if you are having the same issue. Devildog

    Novell Client on XP?

Has anyone tried the Novell Client for WinNT/2000 on XP? I want to show off RC2 a little here at the office but I know they will have kittens if I don't put a stinking novell client on it. Let me know how it works! Any issues? Thanks, Devildog

    XP gonna flop?

I have to disagree.. I myself have been running Win2k since Beta 1, and well, to this day, to make the system stable enough to play games, i have to do a TON of tweaking. It's not just games though, I use it for my virtual office applications as well. Now, on the same system, with the same hardware, I put WinXP in, and boom, rock solid since Beta 1, never had to tweak it or fiddle with different settings, try this and try that - "out of the box" I have yet to get this XP to lock up, freeze, crash, take a dump, whatever you want to call it. Until XP I was not a big MS fan, but they have earned my respect with this OS. My machine has been running the best it ever has, and I thank MS for that.

    Remote Desktop Connection

Does anyone know if you can connect using a non-XP box in any way, shape or form? I am running Win2k here at the office and would love to be able to ditch VNC!! Please let me know!

    Logitech Mouseware not working

The fact that you are using USB may be the problem.. I am still running mine as PS2...

    Logitech Mouseware not working

Nope - I'm no help there, in fact, I had so many problems with the bug-ridden drivers that creative put out for Win2k that I ditched my live card and bought a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz.. Their driver support thus far has been outstanding! The day that XP RC1 was released they already had a beta driver available (not a leak, it's on their main driver download page), and since then they have released at least one more new build of the beta driver. I have full access to all EAX, A3D , Digital output as well as 4 speaker output in all applications and games, none of which gave me the first lick of a problem... I wish you the of luck my friend - if the support that creative gave Win2k is any indication of the support they are going to give Windows XP, your best bet is to count your losses and move on to another card who's manufacturer gives a damn about it's customers and does not give a lame excuse like "Windows 2000 was never intended for gaming purposes, if you want better support for games, you should stick with Windows 98 or Windows ME". Logitech Mouseware not working

Ok, here's what you need to do... First of all, install mouseware as usual. Then, open the mouseware installer with Winzip (yes, it works) and extract all the files in it. Next, go into device manager and change the driver for the mouse - use the have disk option and point it to the Win2000 subfolder of the location where you extracted the files to with winzip...Change the driver to the one located there After you reboot, mouseware will detect the proper driver and will give you access to all the functions of it's application. Hope this helps!!! Devildog

    Cable/DSL Tweaks

Same here. I want to be able to just run a registry edit like in Win2k... Somebody posted in another message to go to WWW.SPEEDGUIDE.NET - well guess what - the Win2k registry patch there simply doesn't do SQUAT.. Has ANYONE figured out how to optimize XP for cable without running TweakXP? HELP!

    Turtle Beach Santa Cruz Problems

When I first did the upgrade to the santa cruz from the live, I just removed the card and drivers, and then popped in the santa cruz.. I still had the exact same problems with the santa cruz.. I then reformatted the hard drive and reloaded windows from scratch and the problem was gone for good.. Did you just do a swap out of cards? or a full-blow clean install? If not, it would be beneficial for you to, otherwise lord knows what kind of creative labs junq is still floating around in your system. Devildog

    3DMark 2000 Scores in WinXP Pro RC1

Well, after finding the 4.05c driver on VIAHardware.com , I tried to install them - no go - program kept closing maybe 1/4 of the way into the install. So, I ran it in Win2k compatibility mode and it installed fine. After that I re-benchmarked and only squeezed an additional 200 3dMarks of out 3dMark 2000. I guess I need to dig into my bios now and see what else I can do - I did a flash to the most recent bios for my motherboard just prior to doing the install, and lord knows what has changed - everything may have gone back to default!
