Sun demands Java for Windows XP

I love this quote: Quote: Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates has called Sun "pretty much almost about as pure as you can get as a competitor" to Microsoft. Can he fit an more modifiers into that sentence? -bZj

    Why doesnt outlook.exe go away?

This probably isn't your problem, but it's a shot.... Do you have a PDA? ActiveSync [for my HP Jornada] keeps OUTLOOK.EXE running so it can keep my e-mail synced with my handheld. I haven't found a way to make it not keep Outlook running. It does keep my e-mail up-to-date by checking every thirty minutes though. Like I said, probably not your issue. -bZj

    Nice new look...

I have definitely noticed a load-time decrease. I've even got a download going [on 28.8kbps], and the front page loaded faster than usual. Keep on with the improvements, they are much appreciated. -bZj Damn, just got another SirCam hit. Yay me! Glad I gots AVG.

    Anybody own DVD slot drive?

I always worried about scratching to bottom surface of the CD/DVD while insertingit into slot drives. Have any of you noticed something like this? Is there something that keeps this from happening? -bZj
  7. I was wondering if any one had an opinion on Steve Gibson's idea that WinXP is gonna bring down the 'Net? [link: http://grc.com/dos/ ] I had read this guy's rant before, and thought him a complete crack-pot. But, as I was applying for a job at a friend's firm, he suggested GRC.com as one of the sites I check out [the DDoS story]. After reading his recent rant about MS not understanding security, I have returned to thinking of him as a crack-pot. He has made a self-fulfilling prophecy. If s'kiddies didn't know, now they do, and if they could use the exploit, he'll show them how [he plans on making a program that will exploit the socket_raw implementation]. I think this is the first case I've heard of where someone is *****ing at Microsoft for finally following the full standard. Usually Ms gets flack for not being standards compliant. Either way, I think MS has taken a few measures to stop the use of socket_raw, by the inclded firewall, and the updates that don't require user input. People should be made more aware of system security anyway - which they'll be forced to when mom can no longer get to pbs.org and dad can't find cnn.com b/c they've been DDoSed. Or, this will just open up a new business model in the tech sector: saving your machine from killing the 'Net. What ever, what are y'all's opinions on the situation? -bZj

    NTFS to FAT32?

I believe 'Everyone' still refers to all the users recognized by the machine, so you need to either 1) enable the 'Guest' account or 2) set up the same usernames and passwords on both machines. I don't think changing over the FAT32 will make any difference, but I'm not certain on that point. -bZj

Best Free Anti-virus for Win2k pro?

www.Grisoft.com - AVG Antivirus. I've been using it since I had a problem with NAV. It plugs into Outlook. and is easily updateable. I haven't been notified of a virus, so I hope it's actually working -bZj
  10. I've been having problems sending through my ISP, so I'm looking for something to send mail through my own server. I have SMTP installed, but I don't have Exchange or anything, and I don't feel like spending any moeny on this, as it'd be less troubl to just send from the web. Any suggestions on mail servers, or a place to look for more info on them? -bZj

    Anyone for volume licensing?

From: http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/newsroom/piracy/productactivationfaq.asp Quote: Which customers will be required to activate? All customers who purchase retail packaged products or a new PC from an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) will be required to activate the software. The software on a new PC from an OEM may be activated in the factory. Product activation will not be required for licenses acquired by a customer through one of Microsoft?s volume licensing programs such as Open License or Select License. Volume licensing programs can scale to even the smallest of businesses, as customers can qualify for the Microsoft Open License program by acquiring as few as five product licenses. More information is available at Microsoft?s business licensing Web site. Any one in for a 'group-buy' type of thing, so we can avoid that little extra bit of trouble with activation? I have a feeling MS's Volume Licensing is going to show a little increase in sales with WinXP's release. I'm pretty sure I can get 4 friends together who would be down for this, once we finish setting up our "business". -bZj

    Anyone for volume licensing?

While avoiding any talk of w4r3z, I prefer the business licensed copies, because it is routine for me to reinstall evey three months. I don't mind reinstalling all my programs, and this clears out those I don't use anymore. From what I've read, you will get an estimated five (5) installs/activations before having to call MS each time. Well, this gives me one year of not dealing with phone calls, before I have to make a grip. I do so love my business licensed copy of Win2K Server. -bZj

Free mail server for Win2K Server?

I'm sure ZoneLabs would appreciate your praise, but I had problems with ZoneAlarm, not the least of which was that it would only run under the Administrator account. So, I figure BlackICE is better than nothing. -bZj

Free mail server for Win2K Server?

I did enable relaying, and the service was running, but I'm also using BlackICE. How would I check to see if that's causing the problems? -bZj

Free mail server for Win2K Server?

OK, I got parts working. I set outgoing server as 'localhost', and Outlook2K seemed to send the mail fine, but it didn't actually go through. I checked the queue, and it's just sitting there. Any ideas? -bzj

Free mail server for Win2K Server?

No, I don't want to host e-mail, I don't want to both adminning my own domain right now. I just want to be able to use myserver for my outgoing mail. I played with this once before, but as I remember, I didn't get it working correctly. I think I'll read through Win2K help some more, but do let me know if you can point me in the right direction. -bZj
  18. Oh my God! You got it working? But I thought, "It will not install and there is no way around it!!!!" You must be a 1337 h4x0r. Do you work for Microsoft? ;( Yeah, I thought it could be done. Thanks for the info Psycho, glad to hear it works. -bZj

    3D Files Board Closed

"Ben" [supposedly one of the Admins] posted over at the [H] that the server wasn't stable enough, and it was taking too much of Tim's time, which is why he closed it. I'll reserve my thoughts on the board, since they didn't go over very well with Ben, but suffice it to say that was definitely different than NTComp, and you had to know that going in. -bZj
  20. You still haven't answered my questions: Does it crash when you double click the installer? Was there an error message? Does the Netscape page say it won't work with XP? Do you understand the words that are coming out of my keyboard? And, anyone not owned by MS[], and tempted to try Netscape, I'd send you to use Mozilla, instead. Much cleaner, less bugs than NS, no AOL branding. And, both are skinable, so if you think it's not pretty with either of the shipped skins, you can get new ones. I prefer the Modern Moz skin to IE's interface anyday though. -bZj

Readability on CRT monitors will be improved somewhat, but it will be dramatically improved on color LCD monitors with a digital interface, such as those found in laptops and high-quality flat desktop displays." WinXP authorization?

It may very well require re-activation, if something as simple as a video card will do it. I've heard of someone replacing a video card, a sound card, and a CD-RW all at once, and still not be asked to re-activate. From what I understand, a motherboard or harddrive needs to be replaced to call for re-activation. This could make a BIOS change a gray area, since it would be the same board, but it's identifier would be slightly different [to indicate the newer BIOS]. -bZj
  24. Could you elaborate on that? Was there an error message? Did it install and not run? Have you tried Mozilla? -bZj

    WinXP upgrade path?

First off: WOO HOO FIRST POST in the new WinXP/.NET Apps forum! Now, to business... I was wondering if anyone know yet the upgrade path MS will allow for WinXP. I know Win95 is out, but who cares about that POS. What I'm wondering about, specifially, is if I'll be able to upgrade WinME to WinXP Pro, or if I'll be limited to WinXP Home. This is b/c I have a copy of WinME here, not in use [never been installed, actually], and I'd like to use that to upgrade to WinXP Pro. As I understand it, if I was to upgrade my copy of Win2K, I'm not supposed to use it anymore, correct? Well, I want to use my copy of Win2K, and pick up a copy of WinXP as cheap as possible, to play with, and I'd prefer it to be Pro, since I play on getting a dualie setup soon, and want SMP support. Even if I'm still allowed to use my copy of Win2K post-upgrade, I'd still like to know if I'll be able to upgrade from WinME to WinXP Pro. Thanks, that is all, -bZj
