    Intellipoint 5 help

I'm sorry I can't offer specific help. I can join you in complaining that MS screwed IP5.0 up. They took out per application assignments, and the ability to assign regular key-strokes to buttons. Hope they bring 'em back. -bZj

    cd burning software

I got a 52x Sumsung CD-RW with Nero 5.5.x for less than $50 shipped from Newegg.com. Nero is my favorite (before I got the new CD burner - getting a newer copy was just icing). -bZj

  5. Quote: This is getting a bit old. Personally all of this is the result of Microsoft getting pushed around. All of this wouldn't even be thought of if people didn't mandate that they must change things to allow competion. Really, we should allow captialism to work and not force competion. Those are contradictory statements. If there's no competition, there's no capitalism - plain and simple. -bZj

    Win2k freezes during normal startup

I am having the same problem! Minor differences: my startup screen gets to 100% before it locks; and I can still boot from CD just fine. I've tried the repair process, but nothing has helped. This is a brand new 120GB Maxtor, so it just can't be dying (!). I suspect it has something to do with me playing around with DEFRAG. I was defragging my drives and noticed my compact flash reader showed up and I tried to defrag it (yes, I touched the stove to be sure it was hot, when I was a child). It could not get sole access to the drive, so it asked if I wanted to run at startup. Without thinking I clicked [yes], and haven't been able to get back into windows w/o Safe Mode. I've tried all the common FIXBOOT and FDISK /MBR, but they don't help. How can I stop Windows from trying to find that drive when booting? (The drive obviously isn't seen until Windows can load the drivers.) -bZj
  7. Yes, it can be done. I think it uses ISA server, but I'm probably wrong. Bump for you. -bZj
  8. Wouldn't it be easier to just add your current account to the power users group as well as the administrators group? -bZj
  9. OK, I'm planning a major overhaul of my system, and I need to know two things: 1) When I copy the Outlook2K outlook.pst file, does it include my calendar appointments, notes, etc., as well as all my e-mail? 2) If I compress a bunch of files/directories via NTFS attributes, that _aren't_ on the system partition [D:\], will they still be readable when I wipe the system partition [C:\] and re-install Win2K? I'm fairly certain the answer to both questions is 'yes', but I don't want to lose anything - like I have sooo many times in the past. Thanks for any clues, -bZj

What were you running before Win2K?

I am the one Win95 vote. Technically, I ran it before Win2K, b/c a friend gave me an old 486DX to use while I was building my first computer that was solely mine. This computer has only had Win2K on it [except for a run-in with Mandrake one weekend]. Before I built my own machine, the last computer my family had ran Win3.1, the one before it was DOS [~1988]. So, I could say I have never run anything before Win2K. Lucky for me there is no need to switch. -bZj

    Athlon XP or Athlon Thunderbird

Well, you could probably pretty easily get at 1.4 TBird to 1.7 without much hassle. I haven't seen any reviews/comparisons between the new Palomino Athlons and the old TBird Athlons, so I can't make a suggestion. I do know that AMD said the newer chips will be fully back-wards compatible with SokA mobos, but they may require a new BIOS. -bZj

which gaming console do you think is better?

Good points clutch. I can't think of much that hasn't been covered between us. Maybe that others could still surf the web, etc., while playing a game on a console. Oh, and the "power inverter" was the adjustment for playing the console in the car. The burned DC games are full on 'backups' - complete in every form. The Playstation had to be modded to allow for burned games, but the DC does not. -bZj

which gaming console do you think is better?

Just to continue the discussion: 1) The XBox will be releasing game patches - if you doubt this, then you are a truely blind Microsoftie. 2) The extra adpter I was refering to was a car adapter, not AC. 3) If I just want to play games, the extra utility of a PC would be useless. 4) My Dreamcast has a broadband adapter available [$100!?!], and you can bet the XBox will too. 5) I have more than one DC game that was burned here, so the "free" PC game comment is irrelavant [www.dccopyworld.com]. 6) Hell, I can go the other way and run Linux on my DC if I want [http://www.linuxdevices.com/articles/AT7466555948.html]. 7) To play multiplayer games on PCs, every player has to have to have a PC, thus raising your initial costs per player - consoles are minimum 2-players, with a max of 4+. 8) The use of the nForce chipset would effectively pre-empt any use of a GF3, or would just be a waste of silicon, as the nForce has an IGP [integrated graphic processor] consiting of a GF2MX [http://hardocp.com/articles/nforce/]. I don't know what will be in the XBox though. 9) Laptops cannot be easily [or inexpensively] upgraded, so they fail similar to a console in this respect. 10) N.E.S. FOREVER!!! Originally, I was just relaying that it's easier to play multiplayer games on the road with a console/TV combo, or to take it to a friend's house, than would be the case with a laptop [extra LAN gear, etc.]. I guess I should say that the last console I bought was a Sega CD, and I'm in no hurry to buy a console, although my brother does have a PSX and a DC. The DC is the best console on the market right now, but it had terrible support form the get-go [much like the Sega CD - like 20 total games - baaad Sega]. PS2 blows [comparitively] except that is backwards compatible with PSX games. Just my food for though, -bZj

which gaming console do you think is better?

Why consoles aren't a waste of money, by Down8: Assuming a universal $50 for each game: Laptop: $1400++ REAL mouse: $40 Total cash: $1440++ Total playtime: 2-3 hrs. [unless another adapter is purchased.] Portable 13" TV: $100 Gaming console: $200 Power inverter: $40 Total cash: ~$400 Total playtime: ??? $(400 + 50n) < $(1400 + 50n) Thank you, and good night -bZj

which gaming console do you think is better?

Interesting question, considering two of the three haven't yet been released.... But, I do have high hopes for the GC - and @ $200 it comes in nicely under both of the others. -bZj
  17. OK, b/c of the design of my desk, using a corded keyboard can get very annoying, so I'm looking for a wireless k/b. I already have an IntelliMouse Explorer, so I don't want a kb/mouse combo. And, I'd really prefer to get a USB version, over PS/2 - personal preference. Obviously, I want RF, not infrared tech - no line-of-sight. Logitech's is PS/2, and Intel's stuff seams to have problems with Win2K. Anyone know of a company that makes such a beast? I'd like to stay as close to $50 as possible. Thanks for any input, -bZj

    WinXP upgrade poll

I got to be the one "Jumping to Linux". Yay for being "1337". Only partially true, of course. I'm sticking with Win2K Server for a long time to come, but I have a lot of faith in a new Linux distro, so I'll be getting my dual-bootie* action on. I need to become an RHCE for a job I want anyway. -bZj *Dual-booting until I get a new machine built, then this old clunker gets to be the 'test' box.

    World Trade Center is gone

I very much agree with that clutch. As much as it would be nice to bring to justice those responsible, no one needs added violence right now. For those of you that can, donations are being taken through Pay Pal [http://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=p/gen/relief-outside]. I emptied what was left in my PP account, and I'm trying to psyke myself up to give blood tomorrow [severe fear of needles notwithstanding]. I'd encourage everyone to do thet same, if at all possible. -brianZjones

    3Dfx Windows XP Petition

Quote: LOL! It's funny, yet sad at the same time. Why should nVidia even bother to support anything from 3DFX? All those people that bought 3DFX products MADE their respective choices a while back NOT to get an nVidia product. Yet, nVidia is supposed to "support" their now-defunct competitor's product line because they bought them out? HAHAHAHAHA! I mean come on, think about it. Hell, it was hard enough to get 3DFX to support older product lines when they were in business, and most companies don't bother with them once they exceed 12-18 months in "age". NVidia has supported all their older stuff beyond the industry average for quite a while with the unified driver distribution, and there are tons of drivers to choose from for your particular use. Personally, I am just hoping that the new line from ATI is going to work half as well as advertised and will do some serious damage to nVidia. 3DFX is dead, and so is their product line. Try to revive something useful like the "SpaceORB". Now THAT was a kicka$$ controller... I don't really care either way, since I own an S3 card now, and plan on upgrading with an ATi card, but... I wonder if the sentiments would be the same if HP decided not to support any Compaq products. Yeah, I didn't think so. -bZj

winxp and win2k on 32 mb system

I just ordered 256MB of sweet Crucial RAM for less than $40. Should be here Monday. Ahhh... 512MB, I can't wait. Think I can get Win2K on my 486/66MHz with 40MB of RAM? ****, I'd run into the same prob I do wiht all the Linux distro I've tried: the 540MB disk ain't big enough. -bZj
  24. Just a little addition to the above: moving the page-file to a different physical drive will be of more use if the drive is also on a separate IDE channel. As for size, I'm of the "fixed 1.5 x actual RAM" school of thought. But then again, I don't know many ppl who could use a 600+MB page-file [i top out around 200MB swapped, even w/heavy multitasking], so ~300 is probably fine. We'll see how that changes when I get my 256MB in the mail soon which will bring me to 512MB.... -bZj

    P!!! cB0 core steping ?

Not actualy 'help', but I can tell you that my cB0 500E can get to 750MHz fine [5x150]. At which point, my RAM starts to take a crap, and I get a little bit of system instability, so I run at 700MHz. -bZj
