  1. I've just installed XP so i headed over to Windows Update to get it patched. Unfortunately whenever I try to go to one of the pages with updates on ('Critical Updates' or 'Windows XP') it gives me a 'This page cannot be displayed' error. It also happens when I go to the 'Review and Install Updates'. This has been going on for the past 3-4 days so I'm fairly sure it must be a problem my end. It also fails to detect and driver updates despite the fact that I know there is at least 2 updated drivers for the computer. This may be related in some bizarre way to the ACPI problems i am having with this PC but I'm doubtful
  2. I'm trying to install XP on a system that I've had for a while but it refuses to install with the ACPI HAL. If I leave the installation then it uses the 'Standard PC' HAL according to device manager. Trying to change the driver for this gives no other options but 'Standard PC'. Pressing F5 during the installation to select the HAL gives only 'Standard PC with C-step i486' or 'Other', where 'Other' asks for a floppy disk with the driver on. I know this PC is ACPI compliant becaue it used to run Windows 98 with no problems with the ACPI functions working (ie. turning the machine off automatically when you shutdown) Specs: Asus K7M Mobo Athlon 500@750 Slot A 2 x IBM 75GXP 30GB Drives 50x CD-ROM ATI Mach64 2MB Graphics Card Realtek NIC Conexant Chipset Modem SB16 (ISA card, i tried removing it in case it was causing problems but no difference)

Can't force XP to install with ACPI HAL

I'm using the latest bios which also happens to be a beta version. i'll go back to the latest official release and see if that helps. ACPI is enabled and PnP OS set to no. No sign of NT/APM Legacy APM when i turn on hidden devices, in fact nothing is disabled. only thing even remotely connected is VIA Tech Power Management Controller which is working fine apparently. I used to run Windows 2000 on the machine but with different graphics/modem/soundcard. i may also have been using the previous bios so that definately needs testing. i've already tried removing the soundcard and that made no difference. is it possible that the grapics card or modem could be causing the problem? i don't have a spare graphics card around or i'd try as i would place my bets on that being the issue as it's a very old card. cheer for the suggestions anyway, will try the bios and see if it makes a difference.

    Broken search

help me! search is broken! i'm talking about the file search in winxp. i was messing with some tweaking proggy and it did summat silly to the search feature. i've tried changing it to work like the win2k search but its still stuffed. pressing 'search now' does nothing and the right hand pane just has the 'To start your search...' text in it.
  5. i'm trying to get rid of the my documents icon from my desktop but it just wont disappear. i've set it up so the desktop doesn't show any icons, but they are instead on the taskbar like the quick launch bar. every time i delete the my documents icon it reappears later on or after a reboot. i've told it not to show the icon in the display properties but it just wont go!!!

  7. every time i open 'my computer' it checks if there's a disk in the floppy drive. it only started doing it the other day but i cant think what i've done to make it happen. anyone know how to make it stop?

    maybe stupid question about NAV2002

cant synchronise if your puter isnt connected to the net, so download the definitions file then disconnect. point is academic anyways by the sounds of things as it's far easier to clear out the reg entries and reinstall every year if u dont wanna pay.

    maybe stupid question about NAV2002

i think you missed the point of my post i'm sure it uses a very good method of hidden keys and suchlike to hold the date the program was installed, but when the only date it can compare this to is the system date which you can change there isn't a problem. i have a valid subscription, i download the definitions and they install fine. i set my date forward a year, NAV now thinks my subscription is out of date. i try to install the definitions and it tells me to renew my subscription. i fooled it by simply changing the date and there's no reason to think this wont work the other way round. it's entirely possible that you could set your system date forward a couple of years, install NAV then set it back, therefore getting a free subscription for as long as you want without worrying about the date after that, but i haven't tried this so i dunno.

    maybe stupid question about NAV2002

well setting the clock forward a year results in a warning that your subscription is out of date, so i presume that if it expired then setting it back a little would fool it into thinking it was still running. i notice that liveupdate pops up a small window saying 'confiming subscription status' when it's run, but downloading the definitions from the website and installing should still work as there's no way for it to check the state of the subscription with an outside source whether you choose to take this slightly dodgy route is another matter...

Sblive Value and XP: Best drivers to use?

i take it the xp drivers are the same as the win2k ones?

    maybe stupid question about NAV2002

i downloaded a set of virus definitions the other day to update my copy of NAV2002 as the computer it's installed on isn't connected to the internet and it worked fine.
  14. na it doesn't work for non-xp systems i've just discovered erm...try http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/search.asp, it refuses to give me any results at the moment tho so i dunno if it'll have the fixes, should have tho...
  15. go to the windows update site, select 'personalize windows update' and choose 'Display the link to the Windows Update Catalog under See Also'. then click on 'windows update catalog', 'find updates...', select ur version of windows xp and u'll be taken to a page with all the downloads on it. i haven't tried this on a machine not running xp but i can't see why it wont work...

    Speedisk won't install

having trouble installing speedisk from norton utilities 2002. i've tried using the nu installer or running the setup program directly from the sdnt directory. the installshield progress bar pops up, goes to 100% then disappears, then nothing happens. checking my processes shows ntvdm.exe and wowexec.exe running. i've fiddled with xp a little so it's possible i've done something stupid, but i haven't had this problem with any other program. the rest of norton utilities installs fine.

    Speedisk won't install

i would hope that an installation program would not require you to have any more than the standard administrator rights! or if it did then surely instructions would be provided. when i run the setup program, 5 processes are created: ntvdm.exe, then indented from that i have setup.exe, winoldapp.mod, _isdel.exe and wowexec.exe. a prograss box pops up saying 'norton speedisk setup is preparing the installshield wizard which will guide you through the rest of the setup process'. this counts up to 100% and disappears. at the same time it disappears winoldapp.mod and setup.exe end, a few seconds after _isdel.exe ends leaving wowexec.exe and ntvdm.exe running. if i kill ntvdm.exe then nothing happens, and the same occurs next time i run the setup. running with the luna theme shows the progress box as being skinned. i've tried uninstalling norton utilities and removing all registry entries by hand but still no luck. neither of the disable8dot3 registry settings are enabled.

    Speedisk won't install

yeah i'm logged in as admin with rights to everything
  19. on a semi-related note i can't seem to get speeddisk to install, it comes up with the % counter which goesup to 100% then it disappears and that's it. any ideas?
  20. could you send it this way too? cheers

SB Live and Pod racer problems

installing dx8.1 seems to have solved the problem for me edit: dammit it happened again. doesn't happen so often now tho
  22. haven't tried this but it might just work: back up your sfc.dll, install wmp8, copy the files it changes into the winnt/system32/dllcache folder (this is where win2k looks for files that have been changed) and also in your winnt/servicepackfiles folder if you've got one, then put sfc.dll back. win2k will probably pop up a box saying different files have been found and you need to insert the cd, say no and agree to leave these changed files alone. sorted i used a similar approach to replace the explorer.exe with a hacked version that allows 256-colour icons in the system tray, i guess installing wmp8 would be the same kinda thing but on a larger scale.

SB Live and Pod racer problems

SB Live and Pod racer problems

coincedently i was just about to post about pretty much the same problem, at least the 'blank screen' problem. i've tried every type of graphics driver under the sun (thinking it was a gfx error) but now i wonder if it could be the sblive drivers, i'll try some other one's and see what happens. configuration: win2k sp2 + all updates 512mb ram sblive value - latest beta drivers (3507s i think) geforce2 gts - 21.88 detonator drivers random other stuff thinking about it it seems logical its a sound drive problem since my mate has a similar setup but with a different sound card and it works fine for him

    Registry: Memory Management

taken straight from the jsiinc site: Quote: NOTE: This is only useful for computers with direct-mapped L2 caches. Pentium II and latter processes do not have direct-mapped L2 caches so i guess it doesn't actually matter (celeron 850 is a celeron II yeah?)
