    NTFS recovery tools

    1. Yes NTFS supports partitions larger than 2GB 2. Linux has a NTFS driver with beta write capabilites, otherwise NTFSDOS is free for the read-only version, pay for read/write, a similar program is available for win9x if you dual-boot. With windows 2000 there's a recovery console you can use, don't know if there's a similar utility for NT4 3. The only problems you'll have is reading/writing to the drive in DOS (see above). Once in windows no program should access the file system at a level low enough to cause problems with NTFS.
  2. ok, a few win2k questions for ya: firstly, how do you get rid of the Local Area Connection icon in the systray? it's currently got a cross on it cos i aint plugged in my network card. i've ticked the box to stop it showing the icon, but it shows it anyway next, how do you get the icons in the systray to show in lots of colours? currently they look horrible (the winamp one in particular, looks fine on the quicklaunch bar, horrible in the systray). icons are already set to use all possible colours and i've tried setting the icon bpp to 24 and 32 but no difference (in fact my normal icons look worse) when connecting to the net, the thing never saves my password, even tho i type it in and click on the save password button, next time i try to connect it's replaced my password with my user name, tryed all combinations of checking box and connecting, no luck i've heard that there isn't any way to get a proggy to run before win2k boots up (ie like u used to be able to put stuff in autoexec.bat in win98). from what i know i tend to agree, but i could really do with running a program b4 windows loads on boot-up. can any1 confirm that i can't do this? hmm, i think that's all i have for the moment

Best det drivers as of today?

how about for professional use? i recently installed the 14.20's and 3dsmax performance is very poor compared to earlier driver releases.

    service pack files

couldn't you just move the files in the ServicePackFiles directory into the system/dllcache directory? yes you can delete the $NtServicePackUninstall$ if you don't want to uninstall the service pack
  5. Any recommendations for a cheapish soundcard with optical out and 4 speaker support?
  6. i think you might be right about it being an update bug, i never had the problem until a short while ago, now there are certain programs that refuse to run (eg. uptime 2001) and others that eventually crash with the same error (getright 4.5b3), i'll even get it occasionally with explorer. i remember installing a batch of updates a while back but i've deleted the uninstall files and i can't remember which one's they were (something recent tho, i install updates pretty much as soon as they come out)
  7. MS claimed that the bug was fixed with SP1, and many people say that it is now a problem with the application being badly programmed, as oppose to a bug in the OS.

Here is how to remove Ad Banners in ICQ 2000a & 2000b

No-ads ICQCore for latest version (2000b, v4.65, build 3281) Edit: fixed it, should work fine now [This message has been edited by *Iblis* (edited 10 April 2001).]
  10. i also always edit the inf, i've got a GTS and it works for me if i change the values for the NV15, NV15DDR and NV15BR (i'm not sure which one my card comes under and i can't be bothered to work it out, i think it's the NV15DDR cos i remember NV15 not working)
  11. where can i get the sleep utility?
  12. nero does allow cross-fading, along with a load of filters and other stuff (right click on the file and choose properties)
  13. i recently bought an Abit HotRod 100 Pro RAID card and set up a stripe set with two 30gb IBM 75GXPs. on the motherboard hard drive channels i have a 10gb seagate drive, a pioneer dvd-rom and an iomega cd-rw. the problem is that i cannot boot off the stripe set unless i disable the two cd-rom drives (ie. set to 'not installed') in the bios. they still get picked up in win2k but i cannot enable dma for either. if they are set up in the bios the computer hangs at the 'searching for boot record from scsi...ok' stage. i'm running the latest bios for the card and motherboard (asus k7m) and i've tried fiddling with a load of settings in the bios to try and fix the problem but with no luck. i could really do with dma being enabled for the two cd-rom drives, any ideas?

Abit HotRod 100 Pro and CD-ROM probs

    anyone??

Via BM driver 580_3011 affects CD writer software.

what about only installing the new drivers for one of the ide channels? could this be done? if so with a bit of rearranging you would be able to enjoy the benefits of a better driver for some of your drives while still keeping the cdrw working. just a thought.

    Chkdsk every reboot?

is there any way to run chkdsk automatically at every reboot? also is there any way of ordering the programs that run before win2k loads up? i have a registry defragmentation program that runs at each reboot, any way i can make that run before chkdsk as currently it runs afterwards. thanks.

    Chkdsk every reboot?

i'm also a bit confused as to what kind of file inconsistencies we're looking at, after all any file inconsistencies can't be healthy, but it looks like chkdsk doesn't bother fixing the one's that don't matter to file usage.

    Chkdsk every reboot?

system is win2k, ntfs. it's my system drive so i can only check with /f on a reboot, but it never mentions it there, seems /v doesn't work on reboot. the error only pops up when i run chkdsk c: /v inside windows, a straight chkdsk c: gives no errors, but doesn't say 'Windows has checked the file system and found no problem.', implying that there is an error. chkdsk'ing on reboot again doesn't show the 'Windows has checked the file system and found no problem.' (not sure if it does anyway) but also doesn't say 'Windows found problems with this drive and fixed them all' (or whatever it is it says). hmm, bit strange methinks, like you say why bother telling you there's an error if it affects nothing and you can't cure it.

    Chkdsk every reboot?

the reason why i wanted to do a chkdsk at each reboot was because o&o defrag always picked up errors on my c drive, even straight after a chkdsk reboot, so i wondered if it might be pagedefrag causing the problem. it isn't, but straight after rebooting and 'chkdsking' i run chkdsk c: /v and get the following on stage two: Code: CHKDSK is verifying indexes (stage 2 of 3)...Index verification completed.Detected minor inconsistencies on the drive. This is not a corruption. any ideas what this means?

    Chkdsk every reboot?

no sign that it has done, but i was just worried it might at some point
  21. *Iblis*

    Chkdsk every reboot?

i guess so, but in a similar way i don't want pagedefrag creating an error just after chkdsk has fixed it, and then the error hanging around until i next reboot. thanks for the help btw.

    Power DVD in W2K

i can't seem to get PowerDVD to recognise my geforce 2, i've tried version 2.55 and the trial version of 3 but neither will allow me to tick the hardware acceleration box. i'm running the 6.49 drivers but i've tried it with the 7.17's too.
