    bash

Another way is just edit your bash profile and set the buffer to 1000 lines for example, then tell it to load your profile by default
  3. Hi gents. After using Kde for a while I decided to jump back in to Gnome only to be greeted by these two errors; Clicking restart or close results in an endless cycle of error prompts, they don't go away. I have not done any serious system editing, the last thing I remember doing in gnome was running yum. Any ideas guys?
  4. Hello everyone. I'm using Fedora Core 2 and updated the kernel with yum. When I reboot I notice an older version of the kernel is still showing in the boot screen. I would like to edit the boot options so only the updated build of Fedora is shown and also XP, that is set up to dual boot. At the moment, I have three options to boot, I would like to change that to only show two. Thanks in advance guys. - Cardinal

Removing an OS from the GRUB boot loader.

Thanks for the reply Dan Here is my menu.lst entries. # grub.conf generated by anaconda # # Note that you do not have to rerun grub after making changes to this file # NOTICE: You have a /boot partition. Your suggestion about leaving an entry as a 'fallback' seemed like a good idea. I'm really only doing it improve the appearance of the boot menu. I've been booting with the new kernel for a while now and it seems fine. Anyway, thanks again.

    Favorite Desktop Environment

I've not tried IceWM for years, it looked dated and was not very accessible when I used it last. I've not tried fluxbox, can I install it on Fed 2? KDE works well but the themes available are woeful. I think Gnome works well enough and looks quite nice and functional with bluecurve for example. Egorgry, keep the tips coming. Some useful advice there. Is there any way of forcing Gnome to remember window placement settings and or icon views? Sorry to go off topic
  8. I have more or less accepted this problem as just being an error with the board but recently a thread I read reminded me of it. I own a Abit Be6 II revision 1.2 motherboard. The boot from cd function has never actually worked. There isn't actually a setting 'boot from cd' so I just set my CDROM as the first boot device However this never has worked. Never. Strange. I have tried many 'bootable' cd's and none of them work. In fact the cd rom does not even appear to be read upon boot, It just goes straight to the hdd. My cd drives (the burner also) work fine in the actual OS it's just this feature. Hmm.. strange, can anyone shed some light on this? Thanks in advance lads. - Card " I don't like the fps way of measuring performance, it's too anti-celeron. I prefer fpm "

Windows XP Service Pack 2 Release Candidate 2

Alec. There is no time limit. It behaves like a normal service pack in that regard. It adds the Windows XP security center, which includes a few updates to the firewall and automatic update. It also adds rather useless AV support that try's to detect the AV software you have installed. Speed wise, most reports I have read claim if anything, a general increase in OS speed and more noticeably, IE speed. I think the RC2 is worth the install. I doubt very much the final will be changed much if at all. No problems here. I have tried a few builds of the service pack and finally this one fixes the problem with viewing DIVX files. No app problems yet, and Symantec AV corporate 9.0 finally works correctly. Good luck, though you won't need it. - Card

what the hell happened to this forum

I agree with Alec's general answer. Times are tough, but mostly this is a boring time to be online. Xp is stale, Linux is going nowhere interesting and relief is far off. By the way Alec, don't be such a defensive moron, you brought this thread way off topic.

    What am I doing wrong?

Hi there. I need help with a simple Home LAN. I am sure this topic has been covered so many times before. However, it has been discussed in bits and pieces with different problems in different posts. I need help from start to finish. Now that I have stated that, please refrain from any unhelpful 'do a search responses'. Now, on to my questions.. I am running a small peer to peer LAN at home. Both PC's are using XP with simple file sharing enabled on both. At the moment, I am using a single Untwisted Cat-5 cable with a direct connection. I do however, have two (or more) standard Crossover Cat-5 Cables and a 5 Port Switch that I tried to use unsuccessfully. I have some minor networking experience with Windows PC's in the past and have tried a few things. I have also tried to use the XP networking wizard ;( that seems to be so useless, and it also seems to fail. Both computers have only the single NIC Installed. 1 Computer runs a simple dial up connection that is not shared. I have set both PC's with an IP address of 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 respesctively. I have not added anything in to the gateway, or DNS sections of the network properties. Running Ipconfig shows me the following information on the Gateway PC (I'll use the term gateway in this case only to describe the PC with the Internet connection, realising that it isn't actually a gateway in this case) Windows IP Configuration Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : mother Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . : Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Unknown IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No Ethernet adapter D-Link Adapter : Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : Description . . . . . . . . . . . : D-Link DFE-550TX 10/100 Adapter Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-50-BA-F8-E7-25 Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1 Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : What happens is neither of the computers can see eachother. The ping command replies with a ' request time out ' when trying to ping the other PC. Pinging Locally, (127.0.0.1) on both PC's works fine. So does a ping command to their own IP address. Now this setup has worked once or twice. That is, almost randomly it will work. But not very often. I have also tried to setup the workstation PC to have it's IP assigned automatically. This also fails. I am not running any firewall type on either PC. Both's PC's have their C drive shared. Both PC's are in the same workgroup. Netbios Is not installed on either PC. Neither of the computers are using any type of Network Access Control, i.e Smart Card. I think that is all the information I can give. So I ask you people, What am I doing wrong? Why won't it work? And as I mentioned above, why does it work intermittently? Thanks in advance. - Cardinal. [/i]

    What am I doing wrong?

I am going to try a different NIC or two as I have a few spare. I am guessing the cable could be trashed though, which is possible (a slammed door perhaps hehe) So I'll use the hub when I try the different NIC's. Anyway, thanks guys. I've made myself a coffee and am off to play networking. P.S. Crazykillerman, thanks for setting me straight with the crossover/standard cable difference. I was a little confused with what I had written also. But, I got it right in practice, I just made the error in my post

    What am I doing wrong?

Again, thanks for all the help so far guys The answers: Yes, Both the network cards are working correctly, and are shown to be working correctly in the device manager. (When I say they are working correctly, I mean they show up in the network connections, The lights are working and Windows show's no conflicts or errors) The cable is the only thing linking the PC's. I do have a hub (10/100 switch), But I could not get the network working with that at all. In the gateway PC (the box with the dial up connection) There are two Network connections shown. The dial up, and the adapter. On the other PC, Only the adapter connection is shown. So to answer Alecstaar, Yes this seems to be normal. The cable is a crossover cable. There are no firewalls enabled on either pc. (Including the Xp one) I'll enable Netbios to see if it does anything but as Alecstaar pointed out, pinging just the IP of each computer should still work on a pure tcp/ip right? Damn. So it could be hardware is that what you guys are saying? Oh, Crazykillerman, Is there anyway to setup one of the PC's to act as a DHCP server? Or is that a no no? And why the hell does Windows specify that one of the PC's should have their IP address assigned automatically then? (It did this by running the network connection wizard) Thanks again guys. I do appreciate it. - Cardinal.

    What am I doing wrong?

Thanks for the reply Alecstaar. To answer your questions. Yes, the subnet mask is set to 255.255.255.0 on Both PC's. Both of the NIC's are showing no problems at all in the device manager. As far as the cable goes, I can't be 100% sure, but it was working fine the other day. Any other ideas? - Cardinal
  16. This might be like beating a dead horse but there is Norton Utilities 2002.
  17. Hello. How are you? Good? That's great. I am running a peer to peer LAN at my place. Two Win2k boxes on a simple CAT5 crossover cable. The gateway machine has two NICS. What I need help in achieving is to get these two pc's to be able to use each others hard drives as a mapped network drive that is always available. These two pc's are always on so offline files (ugh) are not necessary. The guest account is disabled on both of these machine. Both of them are running win2k Professional. They have the same Workgroup name. They are also sharing a cable connection. I don't want to have to type a password every time I logon also. So, could you help? Cardinal. (Gwilym)
  18. Hi. I hope the Subject title was not rude in any way. I need networking help and as far as this forum goes, Clutch is (in my opinion) one of the more knowledgeable chaps in regards to networking. Ok, Here is my problem. I have a simple twin pc LAN set up at home. My pc, with two NIC's is connected to the internet with a cable modem attached to one NIC. The other NIC is attached to a single crossover CAT-5 cable that runs to the other pc. My Computer (THE GATEWAY) D-Link 550TX 100 mbs NIC -------------> Cable Modem. Netgear FA311 100 mbs NIC ------------> Connected to (THE WORKSTATION) Other Computer. (THE WORKSTATION) SMC 1211TX 100 mbs NIC ---------------> Connected to (THE GATEWAY) There is NO hub. It is a simple peer to peer network. It used to work with my old cards. Both pc's used to have Realtek 8029 10mbs NIC's in them instead of the 100mbs adapters they have now. It did work fine, the cable is a crossover, there is no need for a hub in this situation. Ok, so tonight I come home with a new NIC and decide to upgrade the LAN speed to 100mbs by swapping the realteks. Now it does not work. This is how the pc's are configured. My Computer. D-Link NIC - Receive IP address automatically from my ISP's DHCP. Netgear NIC - Is Assigned an IP. 192.168.0.1 Other Computer. SMC NIC - Is Assigned an IP. 192.168.0.2 The other computer {above) has my IP (192.168.0.1)installed in the network properties as a Default Gateway. The primary DNS address the same. Under the WINS tab, ENABLE NETBIOS OVER TCP/IP is ticked (the default). The Worgroup name is the SAME for both pc's. I have even ran the Network ID wizard on both pcs, and rebooted. So that's it. What have I done wrong? Could you please help me through this? I just can not work it out. If there is anything else you need to know, or if anyone needs to know just ask, I'll post the details straight away. Thanks in advance, I really am at my wits end. Regards, Cardinal.
  19. Thanks again for the replies. I need more help but I'm not sure if I should open a new thread. actually, I will hehe. :: Off topic, I was rejected for another job yesterday. The 20th rejection in about 3 months. I'm being forced out of the normal circle most people live in. (85% of them according to statistics in Australia) Unemployed, unhappy and tought by the media to blame myself. The government refuses to admit that Australia will always have a population of around 4.1 million permanently unemployed. As we all get bored, and frustrated problems begin to occur. This computer is my little porthole to a world full of people where we are all equal. The net. My only source of communication most days. Tragic.

    W2k forgets window settings?

I have the same problem. Have had it with every version of Windows. Somewhere along the line it forgets your folder settings and especially your window position. God, After all this time they still can't get it right. I am getting so pissed of with Win 2k. It is so damn buggy. Jesus this is meant to be a corporate OS for fuks sake! 1) Windows 2000 is released. It has many new features and an appalling amount of bugs. 2) Service pack 1 is released. It corrects an amazing amount of bugs. Microsoft admit immediatly that many 'unresolved issues' (read BUGS!)need to be corrected. 3)Server pack 2 is released. It corrects a rediculous amount of bugs and infamously creates many more.
  21. Eh, I forgot my question
  22. I didn't try setting the speed of the cards to 10mb. I tried autosense, and then 100mb half duplex. I guess autosense would not work without a hub would it? In the end frustration led me to taking out the card and putting back the old Realtek jobs and now the network is running fine. Why is that? Almost straight away, as soon as I put the 10mb cards back in they found each other. I have decided I do not like w2k's client to client networking at all. It has been such a fuking pain all this. I am almost going bald. In the past with my system setup as the gateway running w2k, and the other pc using Windows 9x we had no problems. File sharing has proven to be a nightmare. I boot up, the connection to the other computer is detected and in order for me to gain file access I must enter a password. So that's two passwords I have to enter in the space of a minute. One to log on, One to gain file access on the other pc. Is there a work around for this? I just dislike the way w2k has setup simple networking. I have been win 2k loyal ever since I first tried it, and after running windows XP for a while, I am really seeing the flaws in win 2k. Anyway, enough ranting. Frog man said that 100 mbs might not be obtainable with cheap network cards and/or cheap cable. Ok, well one of the cards, the Netgear (now thrown in a box somewhere) cost me $69 and with Netgear's reputation I would of thought this card was at least able to maintain 100mb/s. As for the SMC, well everyone knows they are bargain bacement material. I don't know, I guess I have no choice but to endure a 10meg connection with poor Realtek (although reliable) NIC's. Until I purchase a hub that is. Hubs are so expensive here. I am just left with a bad taste in my mouth after this experience. Oh, also, I didn't know there was high quality and low quality CAT5 cable. Anyway, Thanks so much guys for responding so to my post.
  23. Thanks for replying so quickly guys Ok, neither computers can ping eachother. There seems to be no connection at all. On my side, (THE GATEWAY) I can ping any web site fine, my cable connection is running normally. But I can not ping the other pc's IP (i.e, 192.168.0.2). So it's not a matter of resolving host names. To answer Kgessler's question, The gateway's IP (i.e 192.168.0.1)has been added to the Default Gateway and the DNS settings of the (WORKSTATIONS) network properties settings. That was done before, and alas, still no go. Any further ideas?

    short cut to cache clear

What Cache do you mean? Your Internet Explorer cache? There is a way to create a shortcut for that. A free program called Xteq X-setup or something has an option to create a shortcut on the desktop to clear you IE cache. I don't know how to do it manually however. There is a way that's for sure. If no one posts a better idea, then Xteq is the way to go. If it means that much to you ofcourse. Regards, Card.
