Directx 8 Beta help for W2K

Ok, I went against my word and installed the second beta version of DX8 for w2k, purly because I am dying to fix my sticking key problem in Mechwarrior 3 while playing it online under w2k...lol, Anyway. I installed it by running the setup and everything updated no troubles although it seems not a thing has changed though. I still get dropped keystrokes and sticking keys in the game. Anyone else had similar probs even after up[censored] or have I missed something? This is probably more a question for MS to answer but I thought I would try. Cheers, Ranger

resetting the way IE downloads ?

Hi Mate, I asume you do not want to downlaod IE and not have it auto install, which wont let you choose the location. When you download it, choose Customise Installation then next. Then at the Components Options screen choose Advanced and tick Download only, which will allow you to download it and install it yourself to where ever the hell you want to :-). Cheers. Problem with win2k

Ok, I hope this helps you. I will not post what can be done here, all I suggest is togo to the Start Menu, then Run and type poledit.exe. Go straight to help and find and print out exactly what you want to do. Doing this is critical as you can end up with PC's that will not function correctly if you stuff this up and start adding restrictions you know nothing about. Good luck :-). 6. What is the first app that loads in your sys tray when it evemtually loads? Remember that most times it is starting the program in the background so it may take a little while. Also, if is a program you rarley use turn off start in systems tray, that way you free up memory resources as it will be one less app running in the background.
  7. no, he means logged into the PC, or your User account.

W2k Stop Error and mem dump!!! Help!!

Sounds like it could be a buggy device driver or system service might be responsible for this error. Hardware issues, such as memory conflicts and IRQ conflicts, can also generate this. If a driver is listed by name within the Stop message, disable or remove that driver. Disable or remove any drivers or services that were recently added and find the most recent file that is compatible with w2k for you display card.
  10. Hi Mate, You are correct , the default W2k drivers that install your card do not give you the contrast settings and it is very annoying. Bar tweaking the settings on your mointor I recommend you download PowerStrip which is avalible for w2k and will give you a very high level of graphics tweaking as well as some overclocking features, RES settings and diagnostics. Give it a go. You can download it at: http://www.tweakfiles.com/video/powerstrip.html Cheers!
  11. Could be the DX7 problem with input, similar to the sticky keys senario. Maybe DX8 will help it??

    proxies or no proxies

Good Question. A proxy server plays a few different roles, but the main feature of a proxy server for a ISP is the caching of already accessed webpages, allowing quicker users quicker access. Some ISP's require you to use the proxy or you cannot access the web, others give it as an option. Its up to you really. The problem with some proxy servers is that they become just another device between you and the net that can go down or generate errors. Find out what there proxy server address is and try the net with and without it, and then make your decision. Cheers!

    Unkown Hard Error: ntdll.dll

ok, some things we may need to know: 1.Did the PC ever boot previously without the error? 2. Are you dual booting OS's? 3. What Chipset are you using?. ie RISC, Intel etc. 4. the document says "This error message can be caused when you install an inappropriate driver for your hardware. For example, this error would appear if you installed a MIPS driver on an X86-based computer". Have you installed/changed any new hardware? Cheers.

    Directx 7.0a a no go for w2k!

There seems to be some questions and confusion about DX 7.0a for Windowss 2000. Here is the release posted by MS. "DirectX 7.0a is an update to DirectX 7.0, providing improved force feedback performance and the best compatibility with today's input devices. Windows 2000 users do not need the changes in DirectX 7.0a, as they are specific to input device support on Windows 95 and Windows 98". View these details here: http://www.microsoft.com/directx/homeuser/downloads/default.asp Windows 2000 shipped with DX7. I would also recommend NOT reinstalling DX7 if prompted to install it while installing a new game etc. I dont seem to see any mention of DX8 Betas or info on MS site. Can anyone point me to there info source, or is DX8 beta out of MS's hands?? Thanks & Cheers.

STICKY KEYS FIXED!!! - I KID YOU NOT!!!!

I would call that a hack, not a fix. I wouldnt touch it. It may fix a small problem but can, and probably already has caused more unseen issues that you may not find out about till later. Anyway, each to there own :-).
  17. Ok, we have heard it over and over. Will this work?, why dosent that work?....lol. The fact is Windows 2000 is a first OS of its kind. An MS operating system running under NT architecture with Plug and Play and DirectX support!. Eeeeeek!, a problem just waiting to happen...lol OK, so the manufacturers are now catching on and w2k is now becomming a standard within software and hardware manufactures lists, allowing the kind of support we need!. New hardware seems to be more supported then the old, no suprises here, but before you wonder why you are having problems or before you purchase any new hardware to run under W2K there are a few critical steps that I recommed everyone takes. 1. CHECK THE WINDOWS 2000 HARDWARE COMPATIBILITY LIST (HCL) to see if your hardware is supported. Seeing your hardware listed, or not listed, does not always mean that it will not work all together, but that MS wont have MS certified drivers avalible. You can check your hardwar on the HCL at this URL: http://www.microsoft.com/hcl/default.asp 2. Check with the Maunfacturer of your harware. See if they have the latest patches or hotfix's for new and old hardware. Some just dont have any full stop. Checking this site and forums his also a big help. 3. If you still have problems with Windows 2000 Hardware!. Try the new MS 2000/NT diagnostic helper here: http://dsg.rte.microsoft.com/ This sight is still a little in developement I think so it cant help with everything (who can..lol) but it may get you on the right track. Maybe.... Anyway, I hope this helps. Im no Guru but I these are a few basic steps that may help starting off. Cheers.

Win 98 on top of NT

Hi, Installing Windows 95/98 after NT is not the best way but is not impossible either. The problem with doing it in that order is 95/98 overwrites the NT partition boot sector which will not allow you to boot into NT at startup. To install 95 and fix this do the following: 1. Create a ERD (Emergency Repair Disk) for the Boot sector repair in Windows NT. 2. Install 95 onto the disk, preferably a seperate partition for each OS. 3. When finished boot the PC using the NT workstation Setup Disk 1 . Follow instructions to Disk 2. 4. When asked what to do at this point select the Repair option by pressing R. YOu will then be given a list to select options from. 5. Clear all selections EXCEPT THE LAST ONE, Inspect Boot Sector, then select continue. 6. Inster Disk three when asked 7. YOu will then be prompted for the Emergency Repair Disk. When it has finished you will be asked to restart. Once restarted you should see both Operating Systems avalible to be booted. Good Luck!.

  22. HI all, Great tips on the Reg edits and such to stop the debugging. There is another setting which may be causing the problem besides the DR Watson settings but Im not to sure. Under Systems Proiperties, Advanced, Startup and Recovery there is a setting under Systems Failure that allows you to Debug if you want. Im not sure if this applys to applications crashing but turning it off is probably a good idea. I think this may be more to do with a major systems failure, similar to a blue screen in NT4??. Any Ideas? Cheers!
