how do i use mouse scroll wheel in windows 2000

Unplug your mouse, and delete your driver entry from device manager ("mouse and other pointing devices"). Shutdown your computer, then plug again your mouse. Windows 2000 will detect you mouse again, and will install wheel mouse support. If you still have problems, try using logitech drivers.

This can cause slower performance in programs that use DirectX 8. RESOLUTION To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: Q260910 How to Obtain the Latest Windows 2000 Service Pack STATUS Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Windows 2000. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 1. MORE INFORMATION If you are a developer or author of video drivers, see the following Microsoft Web site for additional information: http://microsoft.com/ddk Additional query words: directx DX8 games Keywords : kbenv kbhw Win2000PreSP1Fix Win2000SP1Fix Version : WINDOWS:2000 Platform : WINDOWS Issue type : kbbug Technology : kbvcSearch ========================================= I've downloaded and installed windows 2000 sp1, but it didn't fix any of my slow directdraw performance issues. I use gens,snes9x, and several other emulators (with legal roms), and I find out that their slow down once I try to resize the window. Is there a real fix?

Q263116:Slow DirectX Performance in Windows 2000

Yesterday I was playing with a nice windows tweaking tool (X-setup 5.7, very good tool), And I found these setting under the "hardware -> videocards -> nvidia -> riva tnt - >Windows NT/2000 Options" folder. "Enable H/W Curbe" "Enable Strech interpolation". the following explanation about the meaning of those options was: //////////////////////////////////////////// If HW Curve is *DISABLED*, it turns off GDI hardware acceleration for curve drawing. If you *DISABLE* this option, hardware acceleration will be bypassed and force your card to use Windows NT/2000 for rendering circles, ellipses, arcs etc. If Stretch Interpolation is *DISABLED* it prevents pixel interpolation of stretched bitmap images. *DISABLE* this option if you do not want Windows NT/2000 to smoothen bitmaps when they are enlarged. NOTE: Please use the NVidia reference drivers from http://www.nvidia.com with this plug-in as it may not work properly with third party drivers such as Creative Labs, Hercules, etc. This plug-in is designed for use with the NVidia reference drivers. //////////////////////////////////////// But after enabling them and rebooting, my system stills slows down when I resize a directdraw apliacation. I've upgraded to SP1, installed dx8 v 140, and still no success. I've also installed detonator 3 (6.18 drivers) without success. Do TNT windows 2000 drivers have H/Strech and interpolation? Note: these setting make reference to two registry keys: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\NVIDIA Corporation\RIVA TNT\Display] "DisableHWCurve"=dword:00000000 "NoStretchBltInterpolate"=dword:00000000 If you have any clue about how to make this work, it really be apreciated!!!! PS: If you want x-setup, download it at http://www.xteq.com/products/xset/index.html

Power doesn't shut off at shutdown

Reinstall win2k, and when asked "press F6 to boot from a specic SCSI device...", press F5. Choose "ACPI complaint system" from the list. This will install windows 2000 in ACPI mode. When finished, you system will self-poweroff on shutdown. PS: there is also a registry key at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon named "powerdownaftershutdown". You might try changing its value first [This message has been edited by someone_nt (edited 19 August 2000).]

    Final Fantasy 7 under Windows 2000 SP1

Did you try software renderer? Riva TNT direct 3d mode was buggy in windows 98, and still is under windows 2000. I have the same problems like you, and the only fix is use software mode.

    Linux Vs Windows

well, maybe linux kernel 2.4 (which finally has USB support, and XFree 4.x will make linux an OS suitable for home users. Until now, x-windows didn't have native OpenGL support (which is vital for developers). Also, adding full support for True Type will certainly help Wordperfect docs look nicer... =============================== Linux Gurus: Sorry If I sound like a Linux Newbie...I'm still one of them :-/

    Detonator3 + LiveWare3 + SB Live = dead devldr32.exe

did you use NVIDIA's driver uninstaler? if you try to upgrade from a previous driver version, it is advisable to uninstal them before you switch to the newer one. If you don't, then random aplication crashes happen. Uninstall you drivers, reboot twice (yeah, a single reboot is not enought to clear all nvdia registry keys), and then reinstall then.
  8. REAL GOOD NEWS FOR ASUS P5A BASED MOTHERBOARDS: Riva tnt cards DO WORK under windows 2000. The only thing you have to do is : 1-disable k6 write allocate and EXTERNAL CACHE in your BIOS. 2-Add these ali agp registry keys posted before. Beleive me, I used to have BSOD every 30 minutes, and now I can leave windows 2000 for hours without a single crash!

    Win2k and Modem Help

This could be caused by a common Windows 2000 issue. It happens because when windows 2000 boots, windows 2000 detects again all COM ports. If you install a modem, and then you turn it off, next time you start windows 2000 won't find you modem, and so, it won't attatch it to a COM port. This can be fixed by just turning on your modem before you boot windows 2000. If you have no success...well, good luck then!
  10. Windows 2000 doesn't crash anymore :-). But you forgot to mention that k6 write allocate should also be disabled in you bios settings, in order to get an stable w2k setup. Anyway, thanks a lot!

Thanks DOSCRASH for that nvidia TNT fix you posted sometime

wooopss! I forgot to say you need to save notepad's text as a registry file, for instance, save it as "tnt.reg"

Thanks DOSCRASH for that nvidia TNT fix you posted sometime

    Well, it is obvious that these registry keys don't exist, and so, you have to manually edit the registry and create them. But since it takes a lot of time, you could try this instead: 1-Open notepad 2-Paste the following text: Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\ALi\ALi AGP Driver] "AGPDataRate"=1 "ForceSBADisable"="0" "ForceAGPEnable"="1" "FrameBufferSize"="C" "FrameBufferDisable"="0" "GATMode"="2" "K6SetEWBEC"="2" "USeUCForWC"="0" "GTLBAlwaysFetch"="0" "ResetAGPCommand"="0" "MaxPCIRetryCounter"="0" "InOrderQueue1"="0" "PCIMode"="0" "ForceAssertRequest"="0" "DisablePCIReadPrefetch"="0" "AGPDelayClock" = hex:10 "SDRAMDelayClock " = hex:10 "K6WriteAllocate"="2" "PADTTLInput"="1" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\ALi\ALi AGP Driver\1.68] "AGPDataRate"=1 "ForceSBADisable"="0" "ForceAGPEnable"="1" "FrameBufferSize"="C" "FrameBufferDisable"="0" "GATMode"="2" "K6SetEWBEC"="2" "USeUCForWC"="0" "GTLBAlwaysFetch"="0" "ResetAGPCommand"="0" "MaxPCIRetryCounter"="0" "InOrderQueue1"="0" "PCIMode"="0" "ForceAssertRequest"="0" "DisablePCIReadPrefetch"="0" "AGPDelayClock" = hex:10 "SDRAMDelayClock " = hex:10 "K6WriteAllocate"="2" "PADTTLInput"="1" -------------------------------------- (end of registry keys) And after this: 3-Go to ftp://ftp.asuscom.de/pub/ASUSCOM/BIOS/Socket_7/ALI_Chipset/ALI_V And download the lastest BIOS 4-Flash your bios with this new one 5-Turn off k6-write allocate and external cache. 6-Enjoy! No more K_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED, IRQ_NOT_LESS_NOR_EQUAL.. PS: I'm using creative's drivers (5.30), and they work great!.
  13. I've been using Snes9x,among other windows based emulators (WGens, Dgen, System 16 emulator directx ver. ...) (with free roms, not illegal ones :-) ), and I've found out they perform awfully in windows 2000. In Fullscreen mode, I get same FPS than in windows 98. But screen looks blocky (in windows 98 there is a kind of iamge interpolation with softens image blocks, and it's not FSAA)- In windowed mode, snes9x runs fine, unless I try to resize snes9x window. After that, performance drops a lot, and from 40 FPS i get 18 FPS. I've read in sys16emu file that riva tnt cards use a special feature, called "glint", which allows window-resizing without perfomance-loss. Since I'm using the same generic drivers (5.30) in both OS, I would like to know wether it is a specific windows 2000 issue, a directx 7, or my card. Does SP1 fix that?0 My specs: -Asus p5a (bios 1010 beta 002) -128 MB ram -riva tnt 16 MB -HD 6,4 GB -Windows 2000 pro (5.0.2195) (Due to stability issues, k6 write allocate and EXTERNAL CACHE are disabled in my bios)

Thanks DOSCRASH for that nvidia TNT fix you posted sometime

==================================== The following text has been ripped from www.ntcompatible.com hardware forum ===================================== Ok, I'll help you chaps out. The Problem with the crashing TNT cards is a known one with atleast the Diamondmm/S3 Helpdesk in Europe. The Problem basically comes down to synching errors between the Ali Aladdin V chipset used on the motherboard and the memory on the graphics card. Too bad most of you people probably can't read German since there is a really good article in German about exactly this problem. First thing you do is you download the latest AGP Miniport drivers from www.ali.com.tw. (v1.66 (?)) You download the latest nVidia Reference drivers from www.nvidia.com. (v5.22) Further more you need the latest bios for your motherboard and last but not least, some luck. Turn on AGP-Turbomode, Passive Release and Frame Buffer Posted Write (these settings will be modified by registry entries later on) in the Bios. Now for the Registry Entries (I won't explain them, if you want to know what they mean leave a note). AGPDataRate=1, ForceSBADisable=0, ForceAGPEnable=1, FrameBufferSize=C, FrameBufferDisable=0, GATMode=2, K6SetEWBEC=2, USeUCForWC=0, GTLBAlwaysFetch=0, ResetAGPCommand=0, MaxPCIRetryCounter=0, InOrderQueue1=0, PCIMode-0, ForceAssertRequest=0, DisablePCIReadPrefetch=0. AGPDelayClock=hex:10, SDRAMDelayClock=hex:10, K6WriteAllocate=2. After you've modified these entries to match the ones here, close regedit and restart your machine. It should now run quite a bit more stable then it previously did. Of course I cannot garuantee that it will. For people who want to know the url for the article in German it's http://www.planet3dnow.de/artikel/diverses/aladdinv_tnt2/index.htm. Credit for finding out how to modify this stuff must completely go to the author of that article, Roland Neumeier. Hope this helps a bit. cheers, Marc Ravian Member Posts: 2 Registered: Jul 2000 posted 09 July 2000 13:18 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sorry, forgot one registry entry that needs to be modified. Here it is: PADTTLInput=1 Marc ===================================== The author of this post doesn't mention this, but it is also advisable to turn off CPU EXTERNAL CACHE and k6 WRITE ALLOCATE in asus p5a motherboards BIOS. Also, use the lastest bios revision available (I Think it is 1011 beta 001, but I use 1010 beta 002).

    Voodoo5 32meg only showing ????

I've read somewhere Voodoo 5000 series have can have 1,2 or 4 VSA-100 procesors in board. And 64 MB videocard models don't really have 64 MB. They have 32+32 MB. That is, every VSA-100 has 32 MB for texture storage, but they can't access other's VSA-100 ram. So, you have a kind of SMP 3d card (much like the old Voodo 2 SLI), with two graphics processors that have 32MB for textures, but can't share memory. That's why you only can see 32 MB in your "display adapter" tab.

nVidia and Asus P5A-B crash fix

I'm a bir sceptical of p5a motherboards...so many "fixes" lately (up[censored] my riva tnt to a newer generic one, registy hacks, bios settings...). What has worked for me is keep on using 1007.A final bios. It is kinda stable, and it works now. Anyway, I will try this fix this time. I pray for this to finally getting an stable OS like linux :-)

Windows 2000 friert ein ... more INSIDE

Ich spreche nicht gut Deustch, aber ich glaube ich kann dir helfen...aber nur auf English!! Now, some tips (sorry guys, I've only studied german for 3 years, and yet I'm unable to write a few sentences without having problems...well, in fact, i STILL have problems in English, tough :-/ ) 1- 5.32 drivers, like any driver newer than 5.xx, do not have agp support. Download the lastest drivers from elsa, or 3.78, which have agp support. 2-DELETE Windows 2000 fat32 installation. If you have Win98, you won't need it. 3-I've heard that some BIOS have problems with HD drives bigger than 8 GB (or bigger sizes). For instance, asus p5a motherboard needs to be flashed to 1010 beta 002 to support 32 GB drives. Some OS will probably have problems with that configuration. Windows 98 has also support for another Fat32 fs, which was added to solve problems with partitions bigger than 8 GB. 4-Seagate provided a software driver or hack to avoid these problems 5-Do a surface check. Maybe your Windows 2000 fat32 partition is physically corrupt. Hope this is usefull for you.... PD: Warum brauchts du Windows 2000 mit FAT32 in dein Komputer?
  18. Don't buy a new graphics card. Buy a new motherboard. The problem is from ali's chipset, not from RivaTNT. Geoforce cards also have this problem.
  19. BAD NEWS!!! Using detonator 2 (5.22), my system will crash once I start using the internet. Plain and simple:asus p5a and windows 2000 is pure TNT (it explodes...). And windows 2000 was meant to be an stable OS...well, linux doesn't need so many tweaks to get an stable X-server session running in a TNT :-(
  20. Good News! I finally managed to find out what was going wrong. I didn't edit my registry properly, and instead of an hex value, I added a dword value, which is not the same. So, that's why everything keept on crashing. Now, everything should be fine. Also, since somebody has recommended to switch back to standard PC hal, I have done it. Lets pray this time things work properly :-).
  21. I've tried it (1011 beta 001). Still, my system keeps on crashing. I'm beginning to beleive Windows 2000 hates my hardware. Why doesn't linux X-Windows and Windows 98 system have this strange problem like Windows 2000...<sigh!>

  24. Well, I put those settings in my registry, and still my Graphics blaster riva tnt crashes. I've tested detonator 2 drivers, and I had to switch back to 3.78 drivers. Note:I'm using ali agp driver v 1.68, and windows 2000 in ACPI mode

Win2k, P5A-B MB, Write Caching on HD

Did you install ali's lastest IDE drivers for windows 2000 (v 0.90). I beleive they fix that strange bug (I have a p5a motherboard, and after installing them, Windows 2000 disk access is faster, specially when putting it into hibernate mode).
