    Getting probed by Code Red

Be warned! I too downloaded the Microsoft patch from their site the first day they offered it, but unfortunately, they came out with another one down the road because the first one didn't work. Go figure, here I was thinking, "Yeah, go ahead with your Code Red crap" and it turned out that I wasn't protected. Oh well. Just wanted to give a heads up!

can someone please help with this

By chance, does your MB require a UDMA controller driver? I saw this error message just tonight, and it was a driver issue with the UDMA controller. That is where I would look first.

    a load of questions...

Does anyone have a problem with icons not up[censored] or seeing multiple one's? To resolve the issue, I sometimes move my mouse over them several times and they correct themselves, but at this point, I am getting annoyed. ICQ will show the offline colors when I actually went back online and that kinda thing.

    some advice please

The SIMS does run under Windows 2000. I have it myself. Actually, I am running that AND the Livin' Large expansion pack. If you are in need of the apcompat file, you can get it from me at http://cablehog.homeip.net/ntcompat I tested ME for about 1 week on my systems, and then quickly went back to 2000. I had a lot of driver issues, plus I like the performance increase when it comes to networking. I don't have to reboot all the time as with the 9x flavors. I am eager to get my hands on Windows XP because I have heard great things from people Beta testing it. (didn't pay the 9 bucks to get a copy...hehehehe) About your performance issue's, I would highly recommend upgrading to Windows 2000 if you can. My games seem to run just find under it, and incompatibility issues are decreasing, especially since we have ntcompatible.com (PLUG) Some games I have run successfully are: Myst III, Quake III Arena, SIM's:Living Large and Diablo II. There are more to the list, but at least you get an Idea of the recent games that it works with. Great job on your research BTW! I am very impressed for a newbie to be so informed. Maybe you should go into the IT industry...hehehe. Good luck on your system, and hopefully you will join the Windows 2000 family. BTW, if you want to stay in touch with AOL members, get AOL instant messenger and stick with just the plain cable modem access. (No busy signals)
  6. Always glad to be of service! Check out getting a Netgear if you are running a serious site..

Sorry about your grandpa. Just trying to lighten up people in this thread. Have you tried BlackIce? I have had really good luck with configuring that firewall than others...

Can you detect what is opening a port up?

Well, If you were running 2000 or NT, I would start killing process's in Task Manager and do a netstat -n 5 (Will refresh every 5 secs) to isolate what service is opening them. It might not tell you EXACTLY what program it is (Task Manager), but it will get you on the right track.

    Netgear = CRAP!!!!!

I used to have a LinkSuxs, but heard about the NetGear RT314 from a friend. Will never go back. The only gripe I have with the company is the Tech Support (Or lack of) They are slow at putting out firmware, which surprised me about a company that put out a good piece of hardware. Are you sure you weren't talking about Linksys? hehehe...

    strange problem

Was this an upgrade from a previous version of windows? I would try to Re-install windows over itself, or, if you don't have any vital info on the drive, format and do a fresh install. There is nothing sweeter than a crisp new install. A whole new day!!

1 machine on network cannot access mail!!! HELP PLEASE!

Step 1) Get rid of Zone Alarm. Step 2) Hug your Grandpa. Step 3) Enjoy your e-mail!!
  13. Well, I can only speculate on this, but I can see how he MIGHT leave a port open for VNC or PC Anywhere, but VNC (Which I prefer) only uses's one port.. 5900(By default). I had a LinkSuxs, but had to keep unplugging it in order to unfreeze it. I have since bought a NetGear RT314. It has a switch built in and provides all the firewall I need. Plus, you can telnet into it (If you forward port 23 to it's IP) or forward port 80 to it and use it's web GUI. My sugestion... If you insist on using Linksys, put a password on it and close the ports. Unless you are running some type of server in your network that you want to access the WAN, you should have no need to forward ports. On a similar note, if you are playing any online games or Netmeeting that use random ports, put that PC on DMZ(Which will bring it out of the firewall) instead of trying to track what ports each program is using. You can easily remove it from DMZ when done. If it makes you feel any better, run a firewall program while DMZ, but I wouldn't bother if you aren't.

Virtual CD with Delta Force LW

Has anyone ever come across a problem creating a disk image with Virtual CD 3.0.8 on certain disks, such as Delta Force: Land Warrior? I am pretty sure it is because of the copyright protection, but am trying to find a work around so I can make this image. It get's through about 800k of image making, and then say's it's complete?! Of course, the image does not work. Thanks!

Virtual CD with Delta Force LW

Thanks for the reply! I think I started messing around with Daemon Tools a couple of days ago. I will check it out better this time. About Virtual CD and compression, I have yet to try that because I wanted faster access time. The images are all on my server, so I got the space. :-) Thanks again!

    Problems w/ Star Wars Racer

I am running the Detonator drivers for my NVidia based card, and have the same problem with my computer rebooting after the progress bar. Does anyone know where I can find the correct drivers that WON't reboot my machine? Thanks!

    Norton compatibility with 2000

I am running Windows 2000 Professional and am having a problem installing any version of Norton; including 7.01 corporate. It says I have to be in 95/98 to install. I know there is something about the apcompat.exe file or something, but will that help in this case? I need virus protection!!

    Virtual Drive for Windows 2000?????

Well, to update my problem, It is the game itself that was the problem. Delta Force LW has some crazy copyright protection on it that prevents it from creating a proper image. If you still want a copy of Virtual CD, let me know!

    VNC on Windows 2000

If you have a router in your network, like said earlier, that port (Usually 5900) is probably blocked. You can try changing the port it uses but typing: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:2-? Not sure if you are trying to access behind a personal firewall or business, but hope this helps. Windows 2000 Pro / Windows 2000 Advanced Server PIII 650 192 Megs RAM ABIT BE6-II

HELP ME, OR I WILL KILL MYSELF!

I agree. I have had other friends that would have the same rebooting problem, and it turned out to be a memory issue. That is where I would point the finger...

    Norton compatibility with 2000

I am not sure if the Norton I got was for NT.. I got it from my father in-law, but that could be the case. It is just strange that no version I have tried works on 2000. About the apcompat file; does anyone know what that does for installation of software?
