  1. I've just had the strangest problem with IE5.5, It would not open a link in a new window and would take about 2 minutes to open a shortcut to a URL. I tried fixing it by the method described in http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=281679 to no avail. I then tried repairing, reinstalling and upgrading IE but it still did not fix it so I tried reinstalling the latest NT service pack which didn't work. I then used a program called Regmon from www.sysinternals.com and found that HKCR\Typelib\EAB22AC0-30C1-11CF-A7EB-0000C05BAE0B} was denying access to normal users and not administrators when a user tried to open a new IE window. It had incorrect permissions on the key (only administrators and the system could read it). I hope this helps someone, this has cost me 2 days of my life and multiple reboots of our Terminal Server.

Has anybody got a DPT PM3334UW UW-SCSI RAID card to work in

Yes I used the NT 4 drivers and its been going steady ever since. P.S. You will need to disable the driver signing to get it working.

DAT Drive locking up in NT4.0

I am currently backing up data every night on a file server, but occasionally the backup fails and the NT backup program complains that the DAT is not ready. The only way to cure this is to reboot. I've found out why it locks (the backup is scheduled using the at command in the console window and when the total file sizes exceeds the tape capacity backup.exe locks out the 4mm device). Is there any way to clear this error without having to reboot?

Ethernet NIC cards ... which one?

You can get a 3Com905 PCI based network card for about $40. I've never had any problems with these and most operating systems recognise them from the start. Cheaper network cards may no support things like hibernate under windows 2000. The 3coms also seem to be faster than the Realtek 10/100 Mbit cards I used to have.

PLEASE HELP w/ uninstalling ACPI MPS support

You can try removing any cards that are not needed i.e. sound cards, network cards etc and then trying to boot the computer up again and then changing it. If this doesnt work then you may have to reinstall win2k from scratch. Unless you have you rescue disk then there may be a way of returning you system to the original confiuration.

    About opening your guest account!!

Reference knowing the guest account name is guest lowers security, you mean like knowing the administrator logon is administrator or root on unix? (bollocks?) If you are going to call a statement bollocks think about the whole picture and not part of it. Again the best defence for securing any account is a decent password. Also the same username and password option does not always work. I've still seen instances where in NT4 it still asks for the IPC password and Win2K where it presents you with the access permissions error.

Any good cheap SCSI card recommendations?

Any Initio based cards will do. You can get them for as little as $20 and Win2k supports them right out of the box.

    HELP! All Win2k gamers needed!!

I doubt that microsoft are going to stop development of DX for 2000, especially as this is going to be their Flagship OS in the future especially with Xbox being Win2000 based. Any development done for it between now and it's release date will have to done on the latest version of DX so that the new games will take advantage of all the features that are added in with each version of directX.

    random lockups in win2k

I've had similar problems. I found out that this was due to my motherboard sharing irqs across two devices i.e. agp and pci slot1. If this is the case move the cards about so that the SCSI card has its own because SCSI cards dont like to share.

    About opening your guest account!!

As long as you password your guest account with a different one from the default. Then you have as much protection as you do with any other login. The main point is to disable file and printer sharing for any direct connection to the internet. Having the guest account enabled is the only way to allow other machines in a workgroup style network have acces to shares on any NT based machine.

    Internet via Network

Just set the win98 machine to use DHCP in the network settings. Win2K will do the rest

Win2K and Win98 not Talking Nice

Is this just a TCP/IP network. If it is the fastest fix is to put IPX with netbios support on all machines or netbui as Microsoft networking has never worked very well with just tcpip. Putting the extra protocols will mean there is extra network traffic but this shouldn't be a problem with a small network.

Eicon ISDN Diva USB. Porblems with SMB

When I use my ISDN TA with both processors enabled under Windows 2000 I get the irql_less than or equal to error. Under a uniprocessor system everything works fine. Does any one know a way of getting the TA to work on a SMB system. Thanks Simon

    5.13 drivers...A far fetched theory...

While the new drivers do not overclock the card (JonnyB may not be so far off base) they unlock more features of the nvidia card and could be putting it under greater strain which could cause overheating problems and would produce the same symptoms that overclocking a card does.

    Routing in WIN2k

What are you trying to do. Internet sharing? If so are you using illigal or legal addresses internally? Routing between domains? Are there any other computers that need the Win2K server for routing i.e. Unix boxes or network appliances? Do you need set IP addresses? Do you need The range you have specified.
