    Hard drive question

I have fixed this problem before but been a long time. Reloading an old box with Win98 this box has a WD hard drive with that stupid EZ bullcrap on it. I booted to a floppy and fdisked, formated and then let Win98 take over. Well when it restarts the first time it says invalid boot disk like it can't see past the stupid EZ crap. How do I get rid of that! When I did fdisk I saw an extended and logigal drive and delete everything. It is reporting a 2112 gig drive. Well if anyone knows thanks. I can't d/load and run there EZ tool stuff as I don't have a Win9x box anymore. TIA

    seconday video card... problems

I didn't see if you had changed in the bios to initiate the PCI video card first this is the problem I ran into and had same error. I also came on an old card when I first tried 2 monitor setup that the drivers didn't support it so it wouldn't work. Change first video from AGP to PCI and see if that works for you. Good Luck.

    WinXP not detecting Ethernet Adapters?

Well very cool. Glad the problem is fixed and also wondering how this just "slipped" by. Didn't you say the nic had the XP approved logo on the box?

    3DMark Scores!

My same system with my GF2 GTS Pro score was 4400 so yes IMHO if you have a 1.3 CPU or better you can get lots better performance with a video card upgrade.

    WinXP not detecting Ethernet Adapters?

The chipset on the nic is made by realtek that is why XP is doing that use the drivers that came with the nic that should work.(You didn't say if you used the included disk to install drivers) Also did you read the install instructions? Sometimes they call for you to install the included software first so when you install the nic the OS can detect the card correctly. Good luck.

    The Motherboard Thread...

Abit seems to have gone from good to bad to better than bad. I build alot of computers with BH6s. MSI have been pretty good to me. Had one go really freaky after a bios flash. Soyo I just moved from the TISU and it was a rock with a P3-700 overclocked to 933. I just put a 1.3 Celeron in it overclocked it to 1.5 and it is a little screamer. FIC long ago was fast but flacky the floppy NEVER worked even after 2 replacment MB! I'm using a P4T-E right now so far it has been great. Overall from what I have used personally it really depends on the version of the MB. I know that the first version of any Tyan MB is going to SUCK after 2 or 3 changes they get it right. Is there a best company? Never used a Aopen but they seem to always have good reviews. Same with Epox or Gigabye. I go with what a few certain people comment on and my experiences. It is still a crap shoot.

Intel P4 vs. AMD XP what's the deal?

All I will say is that I get tired of my friends calling me about whats wrong with there AMD Raid super cool system all the time!! I have built computers with ALL the chipsets out there yes even pcchips or whatever they are and the ones that ALWAYS seem to work with the least worrys have been Intel. I'm not saying that a SIS or VIA can't be just as good but these other chipsets just always seem to need a little added extra attention to get just right. I'm happy as a SOB with my new P4 1.6@ 1.920 and it would go higher but I went with a RDram MB. I like the memory bandwidth. Just got my Gainward Golden Sample 4400 and 95xx in 3DMark2001SE is pretty dang good I think. Oh just for shits and giggles I fired up my original install of Quake. Yes Quake 1 the original and it seems the timedemo just can't go any faster that 457 fps Run time 2.1 seconds talk about a blur!! New Laptop

Well at work I have around 30 Armada E-500s ranging from the P3-500 to 933 and after 1.5 years I just had 1 of the older ones lose the pcmia slots and another one had a hard drive fail. The MB replacement part is almost $1500!! I don't think so. I have a few agents that never hook to the network so I can issue it out the builtin modem still works fine. Replacment hard drive $200 for a 12 gig. I started getting a few Dells have not had them long but so far so good they are Inspiron 7000 I know I know celly CPUs but like I said there running just fine. Besides how fast can Office 2000 run

Want new MB and Ram, help

Hey clutch if you wouldn't mind could you post your memory bandwidth scores from SIS Sandra that is if you use that proggie. I just don't trust some of these hardware sites sometimes. Seeing it from an actual real world user to me is worth a lot more. Ram Int Buffered iSSE2 Bandwidth 2917 MB/s Ram Float Buffered iSSE2 Bandwidth 2917 MB/s 4x 120MHz (480MHz data rate) 2x 480MHz (960MHz data rate) I read about the new SIS chipset but I'm going with the MSI for the raid and USB 2.0 features. TIA

Want new MB and Ram, help

I just got a P4T-E with a 1.6a and 512 meg RDRAM and overclocked to 1920 and it runs great(could get more If I used the dip switch just being lazy using the bios) I build computers on the side and am building another one soon. The system is rock solid stable. Using stock cooler and voltage. Plan on geting the new MSI 845 Ultra-ARU (MS-6398) that uses the DDR ram cause they overclock better. People are getting 2.2 to 2.4 out of there P4 1.6a Northwood cpus just letting you know in case you want to save some $$ on the CPU. When overclocked this high the DDR is almost as fast as the RDRAM. RDRAM is better than DDR ram for the P4 because of the higher bandwith. If overclocking isn't an option. Good luck.

    UPS shutdown problems HELP!

XP Pro P4-16a P4T-E Asus 512 meg RDRAM GF2 SB Live Linksys 10/100 Nic IBM 60 gig IBM 20 gig DVD Toshiba Lite On 24x CDRW The problem is something I do not understand at all. I bought a Belkin Gold Series 350VA battery backup. Downloaded the software from there site, installed all is fine. After 2 days I get a overload warning and as it finshs the warning(voice) it then says no overload. I figure well 2 monitors and the CPU are to much for it. I unplugged one monitor and replugged it into one of the outlets that is just for surge protection. Suddenly it gives server overload warning and starts shutdown. Computer shutsdown. Now as soon as the computer boots with the UPS services set to automatic it just shuts itself down. I boot to safe mode set service to manual reboot. I run the configuration software and set all the shutdown setting to NOT shutdown. As soon as I start the UPS service it just starts the auto shutdown and turns the computer off. I'm at my wits end. Please tell me I missing something really simple and I will feel like a total dumbass. Oh I did a system restore and reinstalled the software and as soon as the UPS service started the computer shutdown TIA

    UPS shutdown problems HELP!

That was the first thing I checked on cause I had remembered seeing it. I think it has to do with the fact that a USB battery backup device does NOT need the UPS service running in XP to work. The Belken software SAYS it is for all the microsoft operating systems but there is only a W2K inf file. Belkins software loads its OWN UPS service on startup and this is what is causing the problem. Windows can't commnicate with a UPS on the comm port so it just goes to the shutdown mode. I tested this with a APC Office backup I have here loaded it up and configured it WRONG and bam instant loop startup then shutdown. Boot to safe mode disable service reboot change the comm port to the correct port and then all is well. The Belkin software worked just fine till there was a power outage and it had to invoke the shutdown. After this the native windows UPS coding insisted on trying to communicate with a UPS via the comm port. APCs USB software automaticly disables the UPS service. Read this on there site also where I found out about the "loop" problem. I think this stems from the fact I was using a serial port for a battery backup and then switched to a USB battery backup. If Belkin can't come up with a fix before the 30 day return policy I will just take it back and get a APC brand which I should have done in the first place. Thanks for all the replys guys.

    UPS shutdown problems HELP!

Well I found on APC site about this problem but it has to do with configuring the wrong comm port in the native windows UPS setup Filled out a support form with Belkin and will call during business hours. Even after trying what APC says to do which Belkin doesn't about disabling the UPS service it still loads there UPS service and starts the shutdown into motion and it can't be stopped.

WinXP Will Not Recognize Plextor 12/10/32 CD-RW

Could someone be so kind as to tell me the Q# of the hotfix please. My SCSI cd burner was turned into a cd rom after installing Nero. Just installed a brand new Liteon 24x writer and XP just sees it as a cd rom. If this hotfix remove and install doesn't work a reinstall of the OS is imminent
