    quake 3, TNT and win2k

The TNT drivers that come with win2k don't support OpenGL or D3D. To be able run OpenGL or D3D games, you need to use NVidia's reference drivers (5.14 work well with my TNT) or you can use the Creative TNT drivers if they provide them. Which reference drivers have you tried? Do you always get the "no OpenGl" error message when running Q3? Do any other games work? What other hardware do you have apart from the TNT? This may be a stupid question, but are you sure you installed the drivers correctly? It's sometimes a bit tricky to install drivers that are not "digitally signed" in win2k. I mean, sometimes you may get the ídea that the drivers were installed properly, when in fact win2k just went back to the original Win2k drivers. To see which drivers you currently have go to: control panel --> display --> advanced --> adapter --> properties --> driver. The reference drivers are not digitally signed and the driver version should obviously read 5.1.4.0 (or which ever driver you installed) Like I said, this is just an idea, I'm sure you've already checked this. I cant run it at all

Hi, It's your video card drivers. The ones that come with Win2k do not support OpenGL or direct3d. At least in the case of NVidia's chips. This is probably true with your banshee also. Try the "search" button; I'm sure this has been answered before. Andy

    Detonator win2k 5.16!

Hi, Just a quick reply to the person claiming that the 5.16 or 5.14 drivers do not support TV-OUT. I havent tried 5.16 out yet, but with the 5.14 drivers the TV-OUT works great. You just have to connect your TV before turning on your computer. In other words, the TV-OUT will be "greyed out" until you plug your tv in. Andy

Smart and Friendly CD Burner not burning

I had a similar problem a while back; for a while I could burn CD-Rs in Win2k without any problems, but then suddenly I started getting coasters. WinOnCD claimed that the CD had been created successfully, but when I tried accessing it, there was nothing on it. The problem in my case was the type of CD-Rs I was using; I was simply trying to put too much stuff on a cd. Are you mainly using 80min/730mb(703mb data) cds? If this is the case, then try putting a bit less data on it. Then again, if you don't usually fill the entire cd anyways, this may not be relevant in your case. Andy

    DirectCD... doesn't install

Is Adaptec trying to force people into using EasyCD since it appears that the DirectCD patch cannot be installed without EasyCD also being present?! I'd like to use DirectCD 3 but I'm stuck with 2.5 because I dont want to use EasyCD... I prefer Winoncd for burning CD-Rs. Is there any way around this? Thanks, Andy

anyone know of a program like this?

Hi, Isn't LM refering to a piece of hardware that would recognize an incoming fax when he's surfing the net, and then disconnect the internet connection, in order to receive the fax? That's how I understood it. This hardware that Syncope and clutch are refering to just recognizes whether an incoming call is a voice, fax, etc. In other words, if your line is already busy (because you are surfing the net), then this hardware doesnt help at all. If you just want to use the same line for fax / internet (but not at the same time), then I dont see what the problem is. You can easily plug two phone devices (your fax and a modem)to the same socket, without them interfering with each other in any way. As far as I know, no software can recognize an incoming call, when the line is already busy. Maybe you could give us some more details, about what you mean exactly, LM? Maybe I misunderstood the whole thing... Sorry Anyhow, just a few ideas Andy
  7. I received an email from Lexmark saying that the Win2k 3200 drivers have been updated. As far as I can remember the date of the previous driver was 04/10/2000. This supposedly new one is 04/20/2000. Does anyone know what the difference is between the two, if any? The address is: http://drivers.lexmark.com/drivers.nsf/software/pn=3200W2K The driver version of the "new" one is 1.0.150. How do I check what the version of the older driver is (the one I have installed now)? Thanks, Andy

    Monitor trouble with NVidia 5.14

I recently installed the 5.14 drivers for my TNT. For a while everything worked fine, and games even seemed to run a little bit faster. Then Yesterday I was playing F1 2000, and the game worked ok and after returning to Windows, I left the computer for a while. When I came back, the screen saver had kicked in and here's the strange thing: the screen was very dark. So dark that it was difficult to see what was on it. This was at 800*600*32@75hz. I tried rebooting, but no difference. I then tried different color depths, no change. The next thing I tried was different refresh rates, and no change there either, UNTIL I swithced to the lowest possible refresh rate, 60hz. So, no it works at 800*600*32 @60hz. Other resolutions like 1024*768 and 640*480 seem to work with any refresh rate. I also booted to Win98 and the same thing happens there, so I guess the culprit cannot be the 5.14 drivers? I assume that it must be either my monitor or my Viper V550 thats screwed up. Any ideas as to which one it could be? Is it possible for a monitor to stop working at one refresh rate and one resolution? How about the TNT? Thanks, I really would appreciate any help! I guess, I'm gonna have to buy either a new graphics card or a new monitor, I just would like know which one is causing the problem. The 60hz is really annoying on the eyes. Andy

    Monitor trouble with NVidia 5.14

I also thought that it was the 5.14 drivers that were causing the problems. But if this is the case, why does the same thing happen in Win98? I mean I'm using totally different drivers there. I dont know if "dark" is the right word to describe the monitor; it's more like "dim" or "hazy". My monitor is quite old (about 10years) so I thought that maybe it's "burned out". I was just wondering if it's possible for a monitor to "burn out" for just one resolution and a few refresh rates (800*600*32@70-120). Or if the same thing can happen to a graphics card Then again, maybe it is the drivers. Thanks again! Andy
  10. With the 5.13 drivers you can enable "coolbits" which adds overclocking to the NVidia control panel. It's great because now you don't need a separate overclocking prog anymore! Andy
  11. Just received an e-mail from Lexmark saying that the 3200 drivers for Win2k are now ready! Just go to: http://drivers.lexmark.com/drivers.nsf/software/pn=3200W2K.EXE Havent tried the drivers yet. If anybody's tried them, please post any comments you have about them. Whether they work correctly etc. Andy

    Lexmark 3200 drivers now available!

I just installed the drivers and indeed they seem to work just fine (albeit no better than the hacked NT drivers ) I still have that 100% CPU usage problem though, that never happened in Win98. But hey, at least I can print. And yeah, the ink level indicators are pretty useless as they don't actually measure the amount of ink left... Andy

    LEXMARK lies AGAIN!

By the 10th? The original message by Dynamic was posted on the 11th. And your reply on the 12th... I have to say I was always quite pessimistic about that release date. In March they were still saying that no drivers will be made for Win2k.
  14. I checked the "hardware compatibility" section of this site, but it wasnt totally conclusive so I thought I'd ask you guys first. I'm about to buy a steering wheel and I'd like to be able to use it in Win2k. I'm still not sure whether I want a force feedback wheel, but currently I was considering the following three: 1. Thrustmaster Nascar Challenger (non-USB) 2. Thrustmaster Formula Pro Digital USB 3. MS-Sidewinder Precision Racing Wheel USB I suppose the MS wheel is the safest bet, in terms of compatibility with Win2k? Anybody have any ideas / comments as to which one to get or which one NOT to get? Thanks, Andy

Anti Virus apps (2K)- which work???

I'm also running Norton Antivirus 2000 and it works just great! Just remember that the Win98 version will not work under Win2k. I also had Antiviral toolkit pro before and that also seemed to work flawlessly under Win2k. Andy

Oops, I got my dates mixed up. Sorry about that...

    WTF with LEXMARK!!!!!!????

4/10/00, eh? It's already 8/10/00. I hope they really mean that they are just finalizing the drivers. Or maybe they mean 4th of October . This Lexmark issue goes to show that it is useful to send lots of e-mails asking for new drivers; a few months back Lexmark was still saying that they wouldnt write Win2k drivers at all. Andy

ie5 crashed w2k .is that possible?

I also experienced the IE5 crash yesterday. I was in the middle of downloading a lot files (clicking on links, right-clicking to "save as" etc.) And then suddenly clicking on links did not have any effect. Only Right-clicking on a link and choosing "open in new window" actually followed the link. Then suddenly the screen went blue (not "the" blue screen, but I could only see the blue background pattern). The only thing moving on the screen was the mouse pointer. I ctrl-alt-del'ed, to get to task manager, and then suddenly I was back at the normal Win2k desktop. Only with the exception that my "connected to the Internet (ADSL)" icon had disappeared from systray (but I was still connected). Andy

    WTF with LEXMARK!!!!!!????

I'll paste the two emails I got from Lexmark below: (by the way, the Lexmark drivers issues have been discussed before. Try the search )"Dear Sir, We are currently dealing with the up[censored] of the drivers for 2000 and the one for the 3200 should be available from the 10/4/00. Sincerely, Lexmark technical support" They also sent me the following e-mail: "Dear Sir, By now you should have got the mail informing you that the driver for your printer will be ready at the end of the month. As said in the previous message, we are very sorry for the delay in replying but we were confronted with a big problem in our database. Once again, all our apologies. Sincerely, Lexmark Technical support."
  20. Hello, (I've used the search ) I have a weird Winamp problem. Whenever I change a cd-audio track in Win2k it takes ages for winamp to switch tracks. It's almost like inserting a new CD. I'm running Win2k final release, CEL400@450, 128mb, and Pioneer DR-A015. This is quite annoying because it completely freezes my computer while it's changing tracks. Hopefully someone can help! Maybe suggest another Cd-player (not the Win2k one)... Thanks!

Winamp takes a long time to change audio tracks

Many of the solutions are so simple! I just figured out why my cd-rom was so slow to change cd audio tracks with Winamp (and some other players). In device manager, in cd-rom properties, there's an option "Enable Digital CD audio for this CD-ROM device". For some reason, it was disabled by default?! Anyhow, after enabling it, my audio cds now behave as they should! Andy

    WTF with LEXMARK!!!!!!????

Really? That's weird. I got an email from Lexmark quite some time ago saying that Win2k drivers for the 3200 will be ready in early April... hmmm Maybe they ran into trouble with the drivers or something. At least we can still use the 3200s with the hack while waiting for the official drivers. Andy

    Question about Paging file!?

Thanks Ge0ph! That's just what I wanted to know! Ok, so after I have a stable system that doesnt crash (or when I think I dont need the memory dump thingy) I can adjust the swap file to reflect my "peak" usage and not 2.5x RAM. Great, Thanks again man! Andy

    Dr.Watson. Turn off??

You can turn this log file creation off from Drwatson. Just run drwtsn32 and uncheck the box "create crash dump file". That solved it on my computer. Andy
