    Question about Paging file!?

Yeah, I've read that particular thread thoroughly already, but as far as I can remember it didn't discuss what the "dump memory" function is for. The people are just arguing whether or not it's a good idea to use a RAM drive to store your swap file (it's not, by the way). Andy

    Question about Paging file!?

I'm a bit confused about the page file settings. Let's say I have 256mb of RAM. If I look at the "peak" commit charge under task manager, I noticed that it never goes above 160mb. Would that mean that I do not need a pagefile at all? Someone posted a message here once saying that the reason why the Pagefile needs to be at least equal to the amount of RAM, is that this way the computer can perform a complete "memory dump" if your computer crashes. What's this memory dump? I would imagine that a "normal" computer user wouldn't know what to do this "dump" anyway. Can anyone clarify this? Thanks, Andy

    CRC errors with Zip archives

Hi, I know this isn't stricly a Win2K problem, but since I'm running Win2k... Anyhow, I downloaded a zip file that spans multiple volumes. When I try to extract the files from the Zip, I get the following message: "Please insert disk number 1 of the spanned Zip file into drive C:.". When I click "OK", I get another message: "The diskette in drive C: is labeled "Win2K", WinZip expected "PKBACK#001". Do you want to use it anyway"? Now, when I click "yes", I get yet another error message: "Error in file #1: Bad Zip file offset (Error local header signature not found): disk #1 offset:4." Anybody have an idea what this means? Could the files have been damaged during download? I have tried downloading some of the files again, but I always get the same error. Is there a way to fix Zip files? I tried PKZipFix for dos, and that tried fixing the files but nothing really changed. Thanks for any help, Andy

    CRC errors with Zip archives

Nope, the files are about 50mb each. I guess they were made using a zip drive or something. I guess the files are damaged somehow. I know that Winzip may require me to copy the back to disks, but WinAce should be able to uncompress multiple volumes. Andy

    SOUNDBLASTER 16 ISA & Win2k

I have a SB32 ISA PnP and it's detected as a SB16, so go figure... Anyhow, if your SB16 is indeed PnP(as it probably is) it should be recognized by Win2k. Do you have PnP enabled in your BIOS? Have you checked that there aren't any IRQ conflicts? Andy
  6. Is it a paraller scanner or USB? I also have a Mustek scanner which I can't make to work under Win2k. I wrote to Mustek on the issue and their answer wasn't very clear. But I understood that they will be making win2k drivers for some of their scanners. Apparently you have to check their Taiwan site for latest updates. I'm still looking for some kind of temporary solution, like somehow forcing the NT drivers to work, but so far no luck. If you figure out anything / find beta drivers etc., please post a message here. Andy

    Windows98 vs Windows2000

I get almost identical FPS in Quake3 in Win98 and Win2k with default settings for my TNT. But when I overclock (with TNT OC) my TNT in Win98, the FPS increases by approximately 10fps. When I overclock in Win2k (with Powerstrip), the FPS increase is only about 2-4fps. I don't really know why that is. Maybe Powerstrip doesnt do as good a job overclocking as TNT Oc does. Or possibly the NVidia drivers are to blame. Also Unreal Tourney is about the same in both Win98 and Win2k, maybe a tiny bit smoother in Win98. I just tried EA Sports F1 2000, and that game actually ran better on Win2k. Generally my apps run much faster and smoother in Win2k. The best thing is that it doesnt crash as often as Win98. Anyhow, pretty soon I would imagine games running much faster on Win2k, as drivers get finalized, games are written specifically for Win2k, etc. Just a few thoughts... Andy

Video cards, why waist the money.

This post sounds an awful lot like the infamous jdulmage thread that went on for 7 pages. Of course it's not enough to have just an SVGA card. If you plan on playing any games you need at least a d3d or openGL etc supported card. If you only use a word processor, a plain old SVGA card may be enough, of course. But most of the time cards like TNT2, GeForce, v3 are well worth the money, if you play any games. Andy
  11. If I right-click on my printer, choose properties --> advanced --> Print Processor, I can choose between two different "print processors" (Lexmark Print Processor and Win Print), and 5 different "default datatypes" (Raw, Raw [FF appended], Raw [FF auto], NT EMF 1.003, and Text). Could someone clarify what these mean? I'm still trying to reduce the CPU usage when printing and when I came across this, I wondered if it has anything to do with it. By the way, I now have a further problem with my Lexmark 3200; black text is really bad quality (also black graphics). When I use the "clean print nozzles" option, in the "cleaning" page, the black bar "fades out" towards the end. (and yes, there's plenty of black ink left ) Thanks, Andy

  14. Hi, Has anyone managed to get a paraller Mustek scanner to work under Win2K? I have a Mustek ScanExpress 6000P and it's currently my only piece of hardware not working in Win2k. I was just wondering if anyone knew of a fix or something to get scanners working. For example something similar as the fix for Lexmark 3200; it was so simple that I just couldn't believe it! Maybe I should just get a new scanner... I heard that the Agfa scanners have pretty good Win2k support. I also wrote to Mustek customer support on this (twice) and I just received an answer. I'll post it here, although I'm not quite sure what they mean exactly...: "Dear Customer, look for new driver in internet: www.mustek.com.tw this month or next. Mustek have more like 20 models of scanner. We have new driver for some scanners but not for 6000 P. Best regards, Mustek"
  15. Hi, Like the title says, is it normal that my CPU usage in task manager jumps 100% when printing, and stays there until the print is finished? In other words, my computer becomes extremely slow when I print something, even a text document in Word. The same thing happens with both my Lexmark 3200 (with the "hacked" install) and my old HP Deskjet Plus (which is supported by Win2K). As far as I can remember this sort of thing didnt occur in Win98. Any ideas anyone? Thanks, Andy

Is it normal that "CPU usage" jumps to 100% when p

Yeah, my printer is a pretty cheap Lexmark 3200. So I guess it's one of those GDI printers. But what I don't get is why this didn't happen in Win98? Today I printed some cd-cover photos and it took ages, much much longer than it did in Win98. I always thought Win2K would handle this kind of stuff more efficiently. For example, someone once posted a message here saying that in Win98 his scanner took all the CPU power, but in Win2k he can scan, surf the net, etc. , all at the same time. But I guess it could be the Lexmark drivers; they are releasing the new ones quite soon (fingers crossed). By the way, my CPU is a Celeron 450. Would you say that's a fast enough CPU for a "GDI" printer? Thanks, Andy

    TRIMING DOWN INSTALL FROM 750MEG

Is it really safe to delete the "dllcache" directory under winnt\system32\? It's a huge directory with over 200mbs on my hd. What is it there for, if I can safely delete it? Andy

    lex3200 and plustek scanner drivers,win2k

Hi, The Lexmark 3200 issue has been discussed in detail before. Please use the search button. There is a simple "hack" to get it working under Win2k. Also Lexmark will be releasing official drivers soon (or at least that's what they keep saying anyway...) Andy

HP Scanjet - WINDOWS 2000 drivers?

8100i? Do you mean the CD-RW drive? If so, why would you pay for any win2k drivers when Win2k has support for it already. DirectCD 2.5 works great (albeit without hibernation etc.) If you're talking about burner software like WinOnCD, EasyCD Creator, etc. , then I think it's more understandable. Just a thought. Andy
  22. Hi, I have the following problem with Word97 and Excel97 in Win2k: Word: When I double-click on a .doc to open it, Word starts and I then get a message: "c:\****.doc is being used by "my name". Do you want to make a copy?" This doesnt happen if I start Word first and choose file-open. Excel: A similar problem. When I double-click on an .xls file to open it, I get the message: "A document with the same name ****.xls is already open. You cannot open two documents with the same name....." Again this error doesn't appear if I start Excel first and then file-open. Anybody have any idea why this happens? Thanks, Andy

Word97 and Excel97 file open problem in Win2k

I was also wondering whether it has something to do with who has logged in Win2K and who set up as the user in Word / Excel. I'm logged in as user with administrator rights, but not specificly as the "administrator". Well, let's hope someone here knows what the problem is. Andy

HP Scanjet - WINDOWS 2000 drivers?

Hi, Yeah, a lot of people are having problems with scanners (myself included). In fact, the reason why I installed Win98 in a dual boot was that my scanner didnt work in win2K. You cannot install Win98 from Win2k. The Win98 setup program gives you some kind of error message. I just booted with a win98 bootdisk, ran the win98 install from dos, and it automatically set up a dual boot. So, in my case at least, it was very easy (apart from the fact that I had to use the boot disk). I had Win2k on my primary partition (c and I installed Win98 on d: . Andy

euankirkhope: I checked the interrupt think, and it was already set to "never use an interrupt". Is that what you meant? I really find it hard to believe that Win2K is supposed to take 100% power for printing. Thanks, Andy
