    Autologin in 248x

    I guess I don't follow, what is the point of having a password on this account if you can logon automatically? Doesn't that just circumvent the other?

    Autologin in 248x

    If you are going to be logging in automatically just don't put in a password. I would imagion that if you changed your password back to nothing that would work again, although I can't test it right now because I am at work.

    Ndis.sys

    NDIS stands for Network Driver Interface Specification. so if you ever get errors regaurding this file it is basically your NIC/Modem driver acting up on you. I would either look for a new driver or get another NIC.
  4. "FireWire" or IEEE 1394 as it is known in the PC industry is Standardized. Just because it does not come standard on a motherboard does not mean it is not standardized. IEEE 1394 has been around since 1980 when Apple copyrighted the name "Firewire". The specification has been expanded on since the beginning to increase speeds change signaling and that sort of thing but it has remained fairly consistant. IEEE 1394 *CAN* out perform SCSI in theory but that will not happen any time soon. The reason for this is because IEEE 1394 can transfer at speeds of 800mb /sec (currently but can go as high as 3.2gb in the future) but that is device to device right now. The limiting factor of IEE1394 is not its specification but the maximum throughput of the local PCI bus. Once that is thrown into the mix it becomes the bottleneck and it doesn't matter if your HD could transfer at 1tb /sec it still has to be transfered over the PCI bus.
  5. Can someone enlighten me what is the deal with the Luna interface? Also has anyone gotten 2428 yet? What is different?

    Theme Services

    This is related to the Activation Required key fix. When you install the OS you need to boot once into normal mode and get the error when you login saying something about reinstalling the OS. Then boot Safemode and change the reg key. If you notice when you are installing new drivers it will say it failed because the "Services Database is Locked". I have tried serveral different configurations and every time I boot straight into safe mode without trying to logon normally I always have this same list of problems.
  7. This has been talked about in other threads. But I will tell you anyway. 1. Right now it does not appear anything major will change. Although it is still in Beta phase so I could be proven wrong tomorrow. Once the OS gets to RC (Release Candidate) there is very little change. 2. Will games run faster? Compared to what? I would say that if you have decent hardware you should not see a decrease but I would not migrate to this OS thinking that everything is going to be much faster, because it is very doubtful. I would say its on par with Windows 2000 gaming but with more compatibility. 3. 2428 in my opinion is very stable, I run it at home exclusively. 4. That is hard to say. Its more of a personal choice. I have been running 2428 for a couple weeks and absolutely love it. Some of my friends don't really care for it. So do a little research and see if you like the new features. 5. Yes, you should run Windows 2000 drivers. Windows XP uses the WDM driver specification. This is the same that Windows 2000 uses and Windows ME *trys* to use. Although I have not seen Windows ME drivers use the WDM spec they mostly still use VXD's which suck big time. Hope that helps you out some. Next time do a search through the previous topics. Most likely it has been discussed before. [This message has been edited by MSGuy (edited 07 March 2001).]
  8. ISA does not do true Plug and Play. ISA was never designed to do PnP it was more of an after thought for EISA and it was expanded to provide *limited* PnP functionality. But to be fully PnP it has to answer the five questions of Plug and Play which are: What are you? Where are you? What resources can you use? What would you like to use? What are you using right now? EISA can only answer three so it is not fully PnP compatible. My whole original point was that Microsoft is no longer going to support ISA or EISA in future operating systems. It may have a few legacy device drivers in the driver.cab but it only does it for very standardized hardware such as the SB 16 and others. Just because Microsoft does not put the drivers on the CD does not mean that the hardware will not work correctly, just that Microsoft is not going to put the drivers on the CD any longer. Also, USB is *NOT* legacy. Just because the max bandwidth of USB 1.x is 12mb does not mean that it is legacy. USB runs over the PCI bus not the ISA. USB 2.0 will support transfer rates of 100mb. All of this information is on http://www.usb.org. [This message has been edited by MSGuy (edited 27 February 2001).]
  9. It is not only MS that is involved in coming up with the PC 2001 spec. There are several other vendors that are a part of it. So it is not like MS is just trying to force their view as the right one, although they do have a powerful voice. All of those devices that you named are legacy and can be substituted with other standards. Just because MS doesn't put the driver on their CD does not mean that it wont work. It just means that they are not going to officially support the device because it makes it a nightmare for their Support Staff. If you can get it to work great but if not don't cry to Microsoft that your 10 year old hardware doesn't install. And just because it is on their CD doesn't mean they wrote the driver. Microsoft does NOT write device drivers, except for their own hardware. They may certify a driver but they don't write them.
  10. ISA is trash plain and simple. ISA in its day 10 years ago was pretty good. But now we have PCI and AGP, fully PnP. ISA is slow, not plug and play, legacy, and all around a pain in the butt. I don't see why people are still hanging on to their crap hardware. Just because I have an ISA NIC doesn't mean I have to or should use it. And to the person that said that as long as they keep making ISA slots it is not dead. The PC 2001 specification says that to be fully compliant a motherboard can have NO ISA slots. In the PC 99 specification it just recommended that there be no ISA. P.S. I have an ISA SCSI card if anyone is interested.
  11. How was I being an *** ? I posted in german for crying out loud. I was just suggesting that if he wanted more help it would have been better to post in English since this IS an English speaking forum.
Also it will help if next time you post in english

    2428 = Best Windows yet

    most definately there will be.

    2428 = Best Windows yet

    The Questionnaire: There have actually been a few reg hacks to get around the anti piracy measures in the latest build. It is pretty easy to get around so I suspect Microsoft will make it a little harder to get around in the next builds.

    2428 = Best Windows yet

    jdulmage: I realize that you post a lot on here and that for the most part you seem to know what you are talking about but I was under the impression this was a forum to discuss Ideas and not flame each other, If I was looking for flames I would go to the ShugaShack. The person before you was just expressing a concern (a valid one with the rumors flying around the net) about the anti piracy measures that might or might not be implemented. Just a peice of advise, next time post with some facts instead of resorting to calling people stupid (essentially).

    2428 = Best Windows yet

    I agree. I have been running this latest build for about a week and I can't say enough good things about it. It runs like a dream on my system, previous builds only stayed on my system for a day or less because I could not stand the slowness and other quirks. This OS is awesome!! I normally get my OS's for free through work (Guess where ) but if I leave before this OS comes out I am definately going to buy it. I can only be more impressed with further builds.

    GeForce 2 install bug found

    I have not had that problem either. I have installed 2250, 2272, 2276, 2296, and 2428. Every time I have installed or upgraded it has worked perfectly.

    XP Killer features?

    Some of the features I have noticed/found so far are: Personal Firewall System Restore (ala WinMe) Luna Interface (Themes) Native Support for Burning CD-R's Driver Rollback MSCONFIG (ala Win9x) Remote Desktop (Terminal Server) IE 6.0 Improved boot time (or so they say) Compatibility mode (NT4, 95, 98/ME, Win2k) These are the things that I have noticed so far. I am sure that I am forgetting somethings. This latest build is by far my favorite Windows Product ever (even if it is a little buggy at times).

    Anyone have a Whistler ISO?

    You have to show Microsoft that you can and will make an impact of the testing of this product. It would be nice if everyone who wanted it got it but thats not how it works. You need some background in testing other products or possibly do support for Microsoft or another vendor. That is how I have been included in Beta's in the past.

    You know what's gonna really stink!?

    You think your life is gonna suck. Think about us who do the technical support at Microsoft. Now THAT is gonna suck!

    Whistler 2267

    Could be Im sorry I have not been able to post any screenshots yet. I will try to do it this weekend. From what I have seen it is not that different from 2257 but they have started to include some of the WinMe features, like movie maker, SFP, System Restore. It also has its own install GUI that is unique and not carried over from Win2000/WinMe. The only problems I have had with it so far is that it refuses to install the software for my DVD card but it installed just fine in earlier builds. Oh well.

    Whistler 2267

    2267 is the latest build that has been released to the public but that does not mean it is the latest build. There are daily builds. The daily build for Friday the 22nd was 2272. I have been running this build for the last week and find it far superior to 225x. As soon as I have a chance tonite I will take some screenshots and post them.

    Why does Liveware 3 for Windows2000 suck?

    There is no reason to get defensive about the whole thing. Clearly these cards are working on some peoples systems. When you assume other people have done things that you think are simple that is when you get into trouble.

    Why does Liveware 3 for Windows2000 suck?

    I have an SB Live! Platinum at it works perfectly under Windows 2000 Pro. Even my live drive works. I couldn't be happier with Creative Labs. I think the problem most of you are having is some other type of hardware conflict that is causing this strange behavior. Just because this was not happening under Win9x doesn't mean jack! Windows NT is a completely different animal so bring up that is pointless. Try doing a fresh install with minimal hardware in there and see if the problem persists. Also try a Bios update.
  25. MSGuy

    Does WinNT support dual monitors ?

    I had a customer with that problem yesturday. Make sure the cards are on the hcl and also check what one needs to be the first display device. In your bios there should be a setting for the first display to either be pci or agp.
