  1. Hey all. I've just installed XP on my laptop for testing, and I've ran into a snafu. Laptop is a Thinkpad T21, and the OS is installed on a 20 GB internal IDE drive. I have all my data on a 60 GB, NTFS drive that is attached via the Ultrabay. Partition is not encrypted or anything, and the disk is basic and online. XP sees the 60GB drive, has marked the partition as "healthy (unknown partition)", has the drive label correct ("Images"), and recognizes it as NTFS, but it won't let me assign a drive letter so I can access the data (and yes I tried under the administrator account). Actions like "change drive letter and paths.." are greyed out. The only action i can perform is "delete partition". The partition acts normally when i boot win2k. Any ideas? Also, is there a way to make the "stand by" button on the "Turn off computer" screen become "hibernate" instead? Holding down shift to hibernate is stupid - who ever uses stand by? Thanks in advance!

    Cpuidle Pro 1.0 w/ SMP

Sorry I can't help you. The only thing I can think of is that the crack for the trial version caused some errors. I'm not implying anything about your software, but you can reply privately if you need a more "stable" version.

    Cpuidle Pro 1.0 w/ SMP

Hey BM, I have the same hardware, except for a V770 non-ultra. Cpuidle works perfectly for me - maybe try shutting off some background programs to see if you can track down the problem. On another note - do you have the 2Mb bios on your KP6-BS? I got the 1Mb and I'm thinking of ordering a new 2Mb chip to get ACPI working. If you do have 2Mb, how is the latest bios working for you?

Best anti virus / trogin software for win2k server ???

Norton AV 7.0 Corporate runs great on Win2K Pro, and the remote tools appear to function correctly on Win2K Server.

    rain, cpu idle

You might want to give CPUIdle a try. It reduced the temps on my dual Win2K box by about 20 degrees F. I don't think the System Idle process really does anything to help keep the CPU cool.

    strange problems with nero

Start up Nero, then use the task manager to set the affinity for NERO.EXE (right click on it under the "Processes" tab). Like most CD writing programs, it can only be run on one processor. You'll have to remember to do this every time you start it up.

Quake 3 Arena on SMP system

Hey slkh: I've got the same mobo as you. I mailed Epox in December and asked if they would be releasing a BIOS update for the 1Mb chip. They said they'd support the 2Mb bios, but "probably not" the 1Mb. Ba$tard$ - I bought the board in August and it already been obsoleted. Also there's no way to tell what type of bios is in the box. Maybe if we just keep requesting they'll do something.

All of a sudden, trying to run Nero gives me BSOD!!!!!

Yes - same thing happened to me - Windows Update is what broke it. I guess we have to wait for an update, or re-install everything.

A good dual PIII mobo ...

If you can afford it and find one, Supermicro are the absolute best dual boards. Asus are second. I have the KP6-BS, and while it has been solid, the tech support is absolute $hit. I bought the board last August; the BIOS is dated like May of 99. I enquired about an update to fix some issues I had - they said no, they weren't going to support my revision of the board. I replied back and politely expressed my dismay - haven't heard back for a couple of months. Thats $250 wasted on a board that they obsoleted within like 6 months of it's introduction. B@stards.
  11. I don't know this boards policy on this kind of thing, but I posted a version that will install under W2k --------------------- Not allow sign by SHS --------------------- [This message has been edited by SHS (edited 03 February 2000).]
