  1. I am using the drivers installed by the win2k installation. The sound seems fine except for this low pitched hum that can be heard with every mouse movement, disk write, web page scroll, ect. Anyone else hear this and is there a fix somewhere. Possibly drivers that are updated somewhere?
  2. Pulling my hair out because I thought this would be easy. Boy was I wrong. Here goes my setup: Installed 2 NICs, both with IPs setup properly Went into the registry in enabled Ip Forwarding, and a ipconfig /all reports Ip forwarding as yes. NIC #1: IP 10.176.251.50 SM: 255.255.255.0 GW: 10.176.251.150 NIC#2 IP: 204.224.246.200 SM: 255.255.255.0 No gateway. The NIC on the 10.xxx side is able to ping all of the 10.xxx address on the network. The Nic on the 204 side is also able to ping everything on the 204.xxx network Now, on a PC on the 10.176.251.xxx side, I entered a route add command as follows: route add 204.224.246.0 mask 255.255.255.0 This allows me to ping the NIC#2 on the server, but nothing else on the 204 side, just the 204.224.246.200 NIC on the server. There seems to be little documentation on this on the net and I really pulling my hair out just to get this working. Frustrated...

Routing failures using 2 NICs and windows2k srv.

Although I figured out a solution, I am still screwed. I obtained a solution by duplicating the exact enviroment on my systems at home. The actual production systems at work that need gateways are maintained by ADP and I am very sure they wont give me thier root passwords to allow me to make any changed I would like to do. So, the easy way out is to just hook their and our switches together with a crossover and use dual IPs on each person needing to telnet into ADP's DMS system.

Routing failures using 2 NICs and windows2k srv.

Finally, I figured it out. The PC I was trying to hit across the network didnt have a gateway. Just made the gateway the router, which worked great. Jeez... Miller time....

Yes, I used RRAS and that did nothing for me (probably since I have never used it before). Both networks are actually private networks. The only thing that leaves to the internet is through a linksys firewall with a 54.xxx NAT'ed IP (the GW of 10.176.251.250) Is there something in the routing table I need to add? RIP? I configured RRAS to be a LAN only router and basically expected it work with no extra configuring, which it hasnt so far. So I am assuming something needs to be added. But what?

    Automated Software Rollouts

A question came up for one of our clients dealing with how to simplify the rolling out of software. This client, a manager of a car dealership with around 70 PC's is wanting something that is as simple as taking a mouse, clicking on a software package icon, then highlighting a few computers and dropping and dragging the software icon to those PC's, allowing software to install. This goes for all and any software packages. Sounds easy, but we all know it is never like that. The network is a win2000 AD domain. Win2000 server, 70 some win2000 professional client PC's. Two administrative users, everyone has just standard user privileges (meaning, no software installs allowed. After all, they are car dealers who want nothing more than to have gator, comet cursor, and all sorts of **** ). So, is there any software similar to this that will allow an ease of software rollout from a centralized distribution point. The most PC savvy at the dealership is still blown away by an MMC console, meaning, this software has to geared to a someone with little PC experience. There is really no on-staff network admin, just one person who has played around with a PC in her spare time. I know of two possible solutions, Microsoft SMS and Ghost Enterprise. Ghost requires the use of snapshots, before and after a software install. My client has already purchased Ghost on her own. But this method is far too intimi[censored] for her to try to learn. She wants something much easier to use. Also, myself, I have never worked with SMS server to suggest that as a purchase. Any good suggestions?

    Automated Software Rollouts

Thanks for the replies up above. I did read up on something on group policies this afternoon. Might have to dig further. Hopefully, with the hectic schedule I have to maintain, I can get a few hours to study up on this. Thanks!!

Active Directory for Win98 not on CD....

I am setting up a nice sized network for a local area car dealership based around a nice windows 2000 server/active directory model. Since I am an outside contractor, I will be designating one of the more computer savvy workers, a younger guy in the parts dept, as the administrator of the domain (user admin, password resets, ect..). But, I ran into a problem. This parts guy is using windows 98 SE and I have two options, but not much time to really spend on it. One would be to upgrade him to windows 2000. This would take a few hours and I really dont have much time to do this in the time alloted. The other would be to install the Active Directory extensions for windows 98 off of the CD. This wouldnt take long, and seems to be the best answer. Now, according to Microsoft's site, the extensions should be on the windows 2000 server CD. For some reason, I dont think they are on my copy of windows 2000. So, where on the CD should they be? Where could I get a download of the complete installer off of the internet? Thanks in advance for any and all replies.

    WinXp a MICROSOFT nightmare?

I am with clutch on this thrashing of Netbeui. It is very fast on a very small network till you throw a linux box into the mix like I do at home. I need interconnectivity between multiple platforms, and TCP/IP fits that goal, where as Netbeui cannot satify my needs. I though MS had already killed Netbeui off. Shows how little I use this protocol or my knowledge of it.

    Anyone do Serious Sam yet?

One of the best FPS's I have ever played. If you like games that have some sort of plot and a story, this might not be the game for you. But if you like that feeling of paranoia, having a full pack of ammo, and a never ending supply of targets that just keep getting closer, this game will rock your world!

    Best action game?

Ya know, since I work on PC's at work as much as I do at home, my 4 year old daughter sees much of my work. And at home, it isnt all business. I like to fire up the occasional UT or Serious Sam. The whole time, my daughter cheers me on. Her mom is from Japan, and my daughter refers to all of the opponents in the game as "Okami"'s, which literally is taken as wolves. Now, American children are scared of monsters in the closet or under the bed. My daughter is scared of wolves (and wolfmen). So when she sees my blowing enemies to bits in a video game, she doesnt think about me blowing humans to bit, just wolfmen and mosters that scare her at night. Do I think think this will lead her to eventually taking out a gun and blowing her classmates to death. Not at all. Why? Cuz I dont own real firearms in my house, and never will. Out of sight, out of mind. If there are any influences in her life that really affect her, it is those darn powerpuff girls and the Pokemon shows. I do see much of those shows in her behavior, not my gun toting, fragging, gory FPS shooters. I see none of that in her behavior. I remember my idiotic mother who was pissed when my Dad gave me a little hand held game where you are a robber robbing a bank. She swore up and down this would lead me to some sort of law breaking behavior. Did I eventually rob a bank? No. Actually, the thought has never crossed my mind. But my parents were very good parents, with mom staying home, not trying to "make her own career", and actually doing what mothers should do. Staying home to raise us and not trying to prove something. My Dad worked nights, but always found time to teach me right from wrong, pop fly balls out to me in the field next door, and give me a good spanking when I messed up. I guess my point is like the others above. Good parenting means good children. A video game is not going to make them into sickos. Put them around firearms and leave them to themselves, they just might found out how to use them in the worst way.

    Which is best?

I have an old Diamond Express 56i. Not the greatest. I would recommend anything US Robotics, but they do cost an arm or a leg, or your first newborn son.

You ought to to put in an extra choice for us SMP geeks who use 2 CPUs and will never go back to singles...

    Global Win FOP38...

Does the writing on the fan state something like YS-Tech? Then you have an FOP32. It is not a bad HSF combo. Once you hear the annoying (and I mean VERY ANNOYING!!!) delta38 fan of the FOP38, you wont mind giving up about 3C' for some peace and quiet. BTW, there is no grill on the FOP32.

    Global Win FOP38...

Your 6800 RPM fan is only doing 4500?? Hmmm... You dont have an FOP38. You have an FOP32, my man! Either you got sold a mislabeled part, or your fan is bad. If it aint loud enough to irritate you, then you aint got a Delta38 on that.

The low down on dual proc

I just set up a box recently using a dual CPU configuration. Funny thing is, there are hardly any apps optimized for dual CPU's. Just 3dMAX, photoshop, flask6, and SETI (these are things I use). But basically, it just crunches SETI numbers all day since SETI is multithreaded.

can't flash bios on ECS P6BA-A+ mobo

Just went throught the same thing, but the board was a dualie from ECS (actually, the generic BXAD from Maxtium). I flashed to a newer BIOS, and then it would not flash back to an older one. So I nearly gave up. But then I tried the awdflash utility with the /f option (use original routine, or something like that) and it worked finally. Now, it may be coincidental that I used the /f option, but this time the BIOS utility actually worked for me. You could try that.

Brian, you are from Fort Wayne, IN?? What a sorry town. j/k! I actually grew up there from the time I was born till I turned 17. I wanted to move back there after I graduated HS, but I joined the USMC, traveled the whole world, saw many things most people read about in National Geographic. So when I finally got out of the Corps, I moved to Ann Arbor and decided to stay there. Fort Wayne is a great town, but not enough to ever make me want to live there ever again. BTW, went to Snider High and lived off Stellhorn near Reed Rd. Nice area.

    Buy win2k get free bonus!

Blade Runner, I know what you mean. Arent Novell Admin's pretty closed minded? I worked as a tech for a bank that was novell powered. The admin there was so pleasing that he was the main cause for a few disgruntled employees to quite (me included). His last words to me were "Have fun with your MS world!". Well, I wouldnt want it any different.

This forum is losing touch badly.

Let me know when things pick back up Vermont for that bong hitting party. Hmmm.. Hash Bash in AA is just around the corner... Cool.. Oh, and JD, seems you can never win here, but I like ya'. Might take stabs at ya' every now and then, just means I know you can accept my weird humor. BTW, I dont think this forum is losing it's touch. I rarely post here, but I use the search feature religiously. So much knowledge is here if you want to look for it. Enough to blow your mind if you wish (after a few hits of "L").

    I can love again!!!

Finally, I got win2k working nearly perfect with my abit kt7a and 1 gig tbird at 1133. My initial problems were: Very low sisoft sandra, quake3 scores, choppy graphics, would not run F1cs2k, horrible pauses with mpegs, horrible peformance in 3d rendering apps no sound with my vortex2, no zip drive writing, and not being able to shut down with out pulling the plug. This made me resort to using.. wi.. wi.. win98 (hate to say those nasty words!) as my OS of choice. I even reformatted twice and installed win2k pro and each time, the same results. Well, I started poking around the BIOS and found a few CPU performance tweak in the softmenu screen. I selected them just to see what they would do. I went back into win2k and lo and behold, I WAS SMOKIN'!!! Sisoft scores went from 2500 to 3150!! Quake3 from 93 to 130!! No more choppy stuttering graphics in any games. F1cs2k ran smooth as silk, no more pauses in Mpegs, windows finally shuts down properl, great performance with 3d rendering. And get this.. I now have sound with a vortex2 in all of my games!! Man, I feel the love!!! Kickin the win98 OS to the curb and I can love again!!

    I can love again!!!

Fast CPU Command Decode CPU drive strength and Enhance chip performance. This is on an Abit KT7a in the softmenu section.

    Why wast your money

Maybe it is me, but I can tell the difference between 1gig @100 FSB and the same system at 1133 @133 FSB. It is so much better at that bus speed.
