    Win2000 and voice modems?

PCI (winmodems) do have a lot of trouble in Windows 2000, mostly because they are crappy <g>. Seriously, though, Talkworks 3.0 does work in Windows 2000 (I am currently using it) with my URS Sportster Voice (ISA). You will need to make sure that you get a hardware modem, rather than a software (e.g. winmodem)modem. Alternately, pick up an external modem. The 3Com Sportster Voice external is an excellent modem. Check to see if there are drivers for the USB version of the external modem, as that is what I would probably buy if I were you. Good TV Card?

Beware of ATI's lack of driver support. I very reluctantly just dumped my TV Wonder for a WinTV. Even their flagship All In Wonder only has beta drivers and MMC 7.0 that causes folks a LOT of problems when it comes to the TV feature. ------------------ Shrink 92% of the things we worry about don't happen - but the other 8% DO! SHS - sorry but I don't want to rip my system apart again to get the debug message <g>. I have a quantum fireball KX 20gig hd. It was a wierd message and I received it on 4 separate attempts at rebooting - wierd because it started with "debug error" (or something to that effect) followed by random text and ascii characters with spaces in between and ran about 5 lines. Nothing intelligeble. Why do you ask? I also copied the i386 dir to my hd and attempted to run winnt.exe but it wouldn't even run (just hung the computer). Shrink

There are apparently problems with partition magic and this controller that are currently being worked out. However, they are pretty vague about it. Fix for BID and SP1 - Part II

No sooner had I finished typing the other post when I received a reply from NetworkIce (probably an autoreply but better than nothing) 5 minutes after emailing them. Here is what it said: Dear Customer, Engineering and QA are working hard to get out a new version of BlackICE that will support SP1 ASAP. We were kind of caught off-guard by this release, since Microsoft originally said they were delaying the release of SP1 for another month. Thanks for being patient! Best Regards, Trish M. Tv turner card support windows 2000

You would need to use the WinTV WDM drivers. The info was posted yesterday (see the front page of the ntcompatible.com). Your mileage may vary, though, as many folks have experienced lockups with these drivers. If you try them, please post your results. ------------------ Shrink 92% of the things we worry about don't happen - but the other 8% DO! 15. Hey SHS - tried these earlier this week (in addition to a few others in the WinTV egroup. For all of us the video froze in Windows 2000 after a few minutes and could not be reinitialized without a reboot. Have you used your tv card a lot with them? If so, are you getting this type of behavior? If not, I will bite the bullet and reinstall them. It is also important to reboot in safe mode and run the remove hardware wizard (checking "show hidden devices") and removing any other btx878/848 devices. If you got them working reliably, I will again be in awe of you <g>. ------------------ Shrink 92% of the things we worry about don't happen - but the other 8% DO! ATI TV WONDER !!emergency!!!

I am saying no such thing - as the previous post clearly states, support for the TV Wonder is slated for Q3 '00. There is no ATI app - beta or otherwise - that works with the TV Wonder in Windows 2000. The card DOES NOT work without the workaround pasted in my previous post and, even then, there is no audio. There were workarounds posted in this thread concerning that issue. I recommend reading the posts carefully and clicking the appropriate links to see what they have to say prior to posting another question that has already been answered. ------------------ Shrink 92% of the things we worry about don't happen - but the other 8% DO! ATI TV WONDER !!emergency!!!

francelj - forgive me but it appears I am working a lot harder to find this than you are ;-\ The following was found in the hardware compatibility section "A": ATI TV Wonder PCI (ATI) Yes W2000 03/00 Received the follow messages: 1) ATI says "Windows 2000 drivers and a new Windows 2000 compatible Multimedia Center for the ATI-TV WONDER are planned for release at a later date." http://support.atitech.ca/products/atitvwonder/atitvwonder_win2k_drivers.html 2) These are generic brooktree drivers, and since the ATI is a BT878, it works. Partially. To install, unzip into the right directory, delete the pre-existing devices from windows, have it redetect hardware, and let point it to wherever you unziped the drivers to. It should pick up all (or most) devices. YOU NEED TO REBOOT for one of the devices (crossbar). If you use an application like WINVCR, vidcap32 or others after the reboot you'll be able to get an image. Now for the problems: 1 - It's flaky as all heck. The applications kept crashing on me (usually on exit), had problems with resizing and preview modes, etc. At least the OS will stay up. 2 - It only picked up video at 320*200. Some apps allowed you to increase the windows size, but youy'd get really grainy pixels. 3 - I only got images out of the deal. No sound. Tuner works, video line input works, but no sound comes out of the card. I think the drivers mention not supporting certain types of sound chips. You can sort of get around this by tuning with an external device (say, VCR or cable box) and hooking the audio from that into your sound card's line in. Of course, that means constant fiddling with the sound card volume control or your cable box's mute. I don't want to say it, but this is usenet, so here goes: make sure it works perfectly under win98 before you try this. You don't want to mess with flaky beta quality generic drivers on hardware which is not working without a hitch. Too many things suck already, don't make 'em worse. On the upside, I was able to get the image to stretch to 1600*1200 (which I can't under W98). Woop. 320*200 stretched by a factor of 6. Now that's progress... ATI TV-Wonder VE (ATI) Yes W2000 06/00 Download you need two files : pv951wdmApp and pv951wdmDrv the video works without a hitch and even goes to full screen. The only draw back is the sound issue as mentioned before. There was no listing under "T" - however if you had found this, it would have been more than sufficient. With all due respect, before asking people to do looking for you, make sure that you have done so exhaustively yourself :-) ------------------ Shrink 92% of the things we worry about don't happen - but the other 8% DO! ATI TV WONDER !!emergency!!!

While that may provide a rather temporary awkward solution (I am not excited about having to change the vcr channel every time I change the TV channel) it is probably better than nothing. Another idea would be using the vcr video out and audio out and just connect it to the TV Wonder and the Aux In on the sound card and bypass the tuner entirely. I wish ATI would get their act together and support this card decently. Maybe the new versions of the card will make it more popular and more supported by ATI. ------------------ Shrink 92% of the things we worry about don't happen - but the other 8% DO! ATI TV WONDER !!emergency!!!

Don't get too excited about it - you only get video and no audio. Not worth it. Check the hardware compatibility section under "A" and "T" for instructions. It is going to be long wait for drivers. If someone has managed to get both audio and video working, please post. I have tried oodles of different driver combo's on a clean Ghost system that I keep restoring over and over, but nothing has worked to restore the audio. ------------------ Shrink 92% of the things we worry about don't happen - but the other 8% DO! 25. Nope - some hacks to get the video going are floating around but afaik there is no way to get the audio working. I have the TV Wonder (as well as a hauppauge wintv which has drivers for win2000) and the picture quality on the TV Wonder beats the WinTV hands down. The driver support from ATI, however, sucks the big one! I have gone back to the Win9x kernel (WinME) so as to be able to enjoy the TV Wonder. I am still deciding which card to ditch. ATI says on their website that drivers are due sometime this summer (Q3 2000) but I am not holding my breath. ------------------ Shrink 92% of the things we worry about don't happen - but the other 8% DO!
