  1. I have been dealing with this game for quite some time now. It always seemed to lockup and then crash to the desktop with an error about virtual memory. However, I tried something just by accident and it now runs fine. What I did was turn my graphic acceleration slider down from the top notch to the next to the top notch. It seems to run fine now. I hope this works for all of you that are having trouble with this game. Ed

Are you using a firewall program like Zonealarm? Once you give/deny permission for Empire Earth to access the internet, it should work just fine. Ed

    RAID Questions.

http://www.storagereview.com/welcome.pl/...raid/index.html has a great description of Raid. From what I understand, even Raid 0 uses the size of the smallest drive as the baseline, so if you have a 20 and a 30g drive, with raid 0 you end up with one 40g drive, striped for performance rather than redundancy. JBOD is one option that most raid controllers have, basically drive spanning with no redundancy or performance enhancements...that would give you a 50g drive with the two in the example. The above website has a paragraph that says "While common parlance for calculating storage says to multiply the number of data-containing drives by the capacity of the drives, bear in mind that this assumes that all the drives are of the same size (which is the ideal way to set up a RAID array). In fact, the capacity of any RAID array is constrained by the size of the smallest drive in the array; it is that size that should be used when calculating capacity. So, the capacity of a RAID 5 array containing four drives that are 20 GB, 30 GB, 40 GB and 45 GB in size is 60 GB (calculated as 4-1 times 20 GB, the size of the smallest drive.) If you were to actually set up an array using such drives, 55 GB of space would be lost in what is sometimes called drive waste. If an array has drive waste due to unequal drive sizes, this will reduce the storage efficiency of the array as well, of course: the RAID 5 array given as an example here has a storage efficiency of (60 / 135) = 44%, instead of the 75% that would result if all the drives were the same size. Some controllers will let you use such "waste" as regular, non-RAID storage. See this discussion of drive size for related issues." There is also a table on that webpage under Summary Comparison of RAID Levels that shows the capacity and storage efficiency of each level of RAID and that table show that RAID 0 uses 2x the smallest drive as its capacity. Speaking from experience, I have a SCSI raid setup in Raid 0 and I can tell you that when I used to use two drives of different capacity (both 18.2 but different manufacturers so still slightly different capacities) I only have 2x the smallest capacity drive. Can't get XP Pro to install....help?

I have built a few systems with the DFI AK74EC motherboard with a GeForce2 MX card. There is a bios update for that board that addresses this very problem...where you can't install XP. Good advice earlier to check for bios updates. Ed

Losing connection to Internet after a while

I have had this happen two times with two different causes. The first time, I updated the firmware in my SMC router, and the problem was resolved. The second time (different computer at another house) I replaced the NIC and the problem was resolved. Couple of things to try...Good luck Ed

XP Pauses for 2 secs about every 30 secs

Just a thought...Have you enabled an IRQ for your graphics card in the BIOS? I am not familiar with that motherboard so I don't know if that option is in your BIOS. Also enable one for USB if that option is there. Ed

    Changing processor under Windows 2000

Any number of things can cause lockups. Changing the CPU only normally doesn't have any affect on the system other than a speed increase. Your post is a little unclear about how many processors you have installed. Also what motherboard are you using? What about memory? Is you memory PC133 or is it PC100? Changing the fsb to accomodate a new processor can cause memory instabilities if the memory is not rated for the new speed. Ed

    ATI or NVIDIA

My experience with Nvidia and XP sucks. BSOD over and over with NV4_disp.dll named as the culprit. Tried numerous drivers and have finally just ditched it in favor of the ATI Radeon 8500. Not too many issues so far but I have only had it one day. Ed

    Promise FastTrak100 TX4 - Opinions?

I have one...but have never used it. Bought it used and am not able to install XP Pro on it on my Tiger MP dual Athlon board. I can install WinME so I know it works but since ME sucks goats and isn't dual capable, I don't use my Promise card. Anybody have any ideas as to installing it on a Tiger MP let me know. Ed
  17. BSOD with every Detonator that I could try. Switched to ATI Radeon and all is well. Combat Flight Simulator won't work although it worked fine with 2000. Otherwise I like it.

    Xp drivers for Fasttrak66?

If it helps any, I couldn't get my Promise Fasttrak100 TX4 to work with XP either....Tyan Tiger MP motherboard. Went and bought a Rocket100 Raid by MicroAurora (uses Highpoint instead of Promise) which works just fine. Ed

    CPU cooling

Quote: No! Was WAY WAY too long, & I hit those links & they are WAY Slow... get me a page with a graph! * I am busy on something here. I cannot spend alot of time reading this evening... got a graph of anything like that page at Tom's Hardware page does, showing what I have been asking all nite? APK After reading through this whole LONG discussion, this particular question came to my mind. Why is it that Mr. AlecStaar has no time to read the presented evidence yet he has seemingly unlimited time to write LONG posts in response to the evidence presented? Just wondering. As for myself, I use a water cooling setup with a copper radiator and copper waterblocks. My reasons for using copper in the waterblocks is to help in the prevention of corrosion with dissimilar metals and the radiator was already copper. As to which is better? I have no idea, just buy whatever works best for you. I like the watercooling because it is MUCH quieter on my dual system. Maybe a couple of Dragon Orb 3's with the 7500 rpm fans would cool better but the freaking noise would drive me even more insane than I already am.

    Xp Out

I did find a thread on www.2cpu.com that said the following: "Did you know that by replacing 11 files on a retail Windows XP CD for an existing corporate edition CD, you can turn it into an unactivated corporate version? This has been tested and it does successfully work! It is important to note that this does NOT hack Windows XP in any way, it merely bypasses WPA. You do, however, need a valid 25-character PLK. It will be interesting to see if Microsoft fixes this loophole in the first service pack release. I have not monitored my traffic logs through our checkpoint firewall to see what was communicated yet... I really am surprised Microsoft would leave such an obvious and easily exploitable method to get around WPA. The files you need to replace are: i386\dpcdll.dl_ i386\eula.txt *** cosmetic only i386\nt5inf.ca_ i386\oembios.bi_ i386\oembios.ca_ i386\oembios.da_ i386\oembios.si_ i386\pidgen.dll i386\setupp.ini i386\setupreg.hiv i386\win9xupg\win95upg.inf End quote. I would guess from this that the files are different on the corporate version. More than just the code to disable WPA. Ed
