    [POLL] Whistler or Windows 2000?

I think what he is getting at is that any newer revision of any product usually adds compatability with hardware and/or software, fixes bugs, adds visual and/or operational enhancements and generally improves on an older product. DOS ran things designed for it just fine as did Windows 3.0, 3.1 etc. To say that Whistler is so much better just because it improves upon Win2k is silly. After all, it is expected that it will be "improved". There were lots of hardware that did not work in Windows95 that now works in Windows98. Also some that didn't work in NT but now works in 2k. As for his comments having nothing to do with this discussion, since when has that been a point for you? Irrelevancy seems to be a habit for many posts. Ed

    Simple Video Card Question

Only advantage that the RivaTNT has over the Voodoo3 is 32bit color (Slow that it is on that card). Take the Voodoo3. More compatible, way better performance, no 32 bit color in Quake3 (oh well). ------------------ Supermicro P6DBE Dual PIII 600 @800 Voodoo5 5500 ,Promise Fasttrak66 IDE Raid, SBLive

Advice on dual slot 1 mobo please

800E's or 800EB's? Makes a difference. If they are 800E's (100Mhz FSB) then my personal recommendation is the Supermicro P6DBE, a BX based dual Slot 1 board that has been extremely stable for me. No SCSI on mine. Used varying video cards such as V5, V3, TNT2, TNT2 Ultra with 2 V2 12mb in SLI.
  5. ROTFLMAO. Nice Insult. Too bad it didn't come from jdulmage. I remember copying that text from this board a number of months ago. Quite a handy collection of verbage to throw at the small minded. After all, if the shoe fits... Ed
  6. I have a Plextor 4x12 CDR SCSI burner with a Plextor 32x SCSI reader that I would like to sell. Running currently on my Supermicro P6DBE system with an ISA Adaptec 1520b adapter. 50 pin. Has worked flawlessly for me. I have had the combo for about 9 months, burned about 50 cds. I would like to get $150 US for the complete setup. Located in Portland Oregon. Ed edmarvin@jps.net

    TNT2 drivers

It would seem from your post that the ASUS 5.31 drivers are actually better than any others if they don't lock your PC up. However, my kids computer with a Diamond V770 (TNT2 Ultra) is using the 6.31 drivers right now. Unzip the drivers from Nvidia in a folder, go to display properties and update driver, search for a driver and choose the one in the folder where you have unzipped the new drivers. Voila, updated. That is how I have always done it and it seems to work. Ed

    Voodoo5 Vs. Geforce2 Ultra

My V5 does the tunnel tests just fine. I know that it didn't do so well when I had only 128 meg RAM but now it does just fine since I upgraded to 256 meg. Ed

Screen blank when open D3D games...

Actually the Viper II according to Diamond is using the S3 Savage 2000 chipset. Most of the reading I have done regarding that card has not been very encouraging. http://www.gamespot.com/hardware/video/2d3d/viperii.html http://www.sharkyextreme.com/hardware/reviews/video/diamond_viper2/ http://s3.nextmill.com/articles/viper2_1.html How to fix the problem of a blank screen? Agreeing with jdulmage, I would start by looking for correct drivers for the card chipset. Most likely these will be available only from Diamond, possibly from S3 unless they are all on the Diamond site. www.diamondmm.com Ed

Screen blank when open D3D games...

More information is always better. For instance: What video card, version of driver, resolution of choice, refresh rate, game in question ...etc. Without information, I for one cannot help. Psychic I am not. Ed

    Heavy Metall - FAKK2: Can't find cd!!!

Quote: Originally posted by brainsoft: I can install the game just fine, but when I go to play it, to start a new game, It asks for the cd! I thought it was because it wasn't in the firt CD drive, but when i changed the drive letters it still didn't work! Even after a restart! grrrrrr Any ideas? I ahve the same trouble with The Sims: Livin' Large. Installs just fine (orignal CD) but when I go to play it asks for the CD. After much experimenting I have found that the game apparently expects an IDE based CDRom because I can install AND play from my 4x cdrom but I can only install it from my 32x SCSI cdrom. Maybe similar to the message I get when I install Quake II and it telss me that there is no cdrom installed but still allows me to install the game. Ed

    Sparq IDE drives and Windows2000

Same thing on mine. I had all sorts of trouble with file allocation errors in both Win98 and Win2k. I finally gave up with the retarded thing and tossed it. Basically a waste of money and it shows why they are no longer in business. No fixes that I n\know of. Ed

    Overheating LED on SuperMicro Case

You are correct in assuming that Supermicro boards have a place to connect that LED. My P6DBE does. However, none of my other systems have anyplace to connect that LED as far as temperature monitoring. Mine is hooked to my Promise Fasttrak66 controller to show its activity. Ed

    Make Bootablr Copy?

Sorry, I didn't understand that that was what he wanted to do. I understood him as asking how to copy the CD and retain the bootable part. My fault. Ed ------------------ Supermicro P6DBE Dual PIII 600 @800 Voodoo5 5500 ,Promise Fasttrak66 IDE Raid, SBLive

Or you can download the latest CloneCD and make a bit for bit clone of your Win2k CD. www.elbay.de Nothing more to do, no long list of instructions, just put in the CD and copy it. Ed ------------------ Supermicro P6DBE Dual PIII 600 @800 Voodoo5 5500 ,Promise Fasttrak66 IDE Raid, SBLive

    Phillips or SHS...read this NOW!!

Maybe thegrants has been reading these forums for weeks and has finally felt that he needed to say something. Maybe he has read all of your foolish posts from your other threads and has decided that your input is not necessary. After all, posting 200+ messages of mostly useless drivel does not make ones advice necessarily trustworthy. Crying to the admins and calling thegrants (or anyone else) names just shows the level of maturity that at least I have come to expect from you. Reputations can be lost in a moment, and building a reputation takes time. Your history here has not been all one of "Let me help those who need it" but many times has been one of criticalness and disrespect. You seem to be upset that someone did not aggree with or find your advice useful. Sorry. That is life. GET OVER IT OR DIE MAD. No need to ***** and moan about it because life goes on. Make a choice. This has been a forum of great use to me for the most part and it has always been one of tolerance. I mean if they haven't banned you after all the drivel that you have posted over the last few months they will surely allow thegrants to remain. I am all for freedom of speech but you have the right to disagree with me if you choose. Ed [This message has been edited by EM (edited 28 September 2000).]

    Phillips or SHS...read this NOW!!

I wouldn't call a total of 3 posts (as of this post) by "thegrants" a lot of posts aimed at flaming anyone. I have read your foolishly long thread about absolutely nothing (I didn't mean to piss...)and your other threads including "we must fight back..." and you are not the first to cast stones. I mean that you have called others names as well and in my book you can expect others to do the same to you as you do to them. To be honest I am not sure the value of what thegrants has posted is any less than what I have seen you post. Maybe it is just that the truth sometimes hurts. I suppose that if your antics are tolerated than the antics of others should also be tolerated. My 2 cents. No games working with W2k at all . . .

The only thing I can think of is a D3D incompatiblity. I have both of the games in question installed and running just fine on my Win2k system.
