the closing of the big thread

There was also some veiled threats of legal action against NTCompatible apparently based on his perception that he had been "slandered" (or something like that) and the hosts of this board had not done anything about it. Ed

Repost: Sega Rally 2 and Win2000. Help.

Get the latest application compatability update from microsoft. Then make a shortcut to the setup program on the CD. Right click on the shortcut and under the compatability tab, select Win95 or Win98. If that works, great. If it doesn't, I don't know what to say since I don't have that game. Ed

Help with Instalation of Program

Get the latest application compatibility from Microsoft. After you run it, then create a shortcut on your desktop for the application that you are trying to run. For eg: The application has a setup program that fails when you run it. Create a shortcut to the setup program. Right click on the shortcut and go to properties. One of the tabs will say compatibility. Choose Win95, Win98 or NT 4.0. If it then installs fine, great, have a nice day. If it doesn't, then I am out of suggestions. Ed

Upgrading my PIII processors, advise please.

You shouldn't have to change any jumpers on the motherboard since the fsb speed will be the same as the 500's (100) and the multiplier is locked on the cpus and won't change no matter what you set the board to. You should be able to just pop in the new cpus, hook up the cooling fans and be on your way. I am assuming you purchased 100mhz FSB cpus since the DGU only supports up to 100 mhz FSB officially. Ed
5. Right click on the taskbar, go to properties. Go to advanced and add explorer back into the menu. It is in the folder that you installed Win2k to (default is Winnt). Ed

CPU's?

Quote: You ought to to put in an extra choice for us SMP geeks who use 2 CPUs and will never go back to singles... Highly agree with this! Duallie is the only way to go. "Because two are better than one."

CPU's?

Personally leaning to ward the PIII of the slower versions ie: 600e. Main reason is I have my dual 600e FCPGA @ 918 on a VP6 at default voltage. My other dual board with slot1 600e's is running as fast as the motherboard will go at 800 also at default voltage. Great overclockability, cheap processor. So I have two running at 318mhz over spec and two running at 200 mhz over spec. The AMD Tbird 1ghz that I have tops out stable at 1050, a whopping 50mhz faster than spec. Since the PIII 600e are starting at 102 on pricewatch and will run in dual configuration, I like them better than the Tbirds. My 2 cents. Ed

Does Madden 2001 Run In Windows XP?

Quote: Cause it sure ain't ENGLISH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Maybe english isn't their first language. There can be many reasons for spelling and/or grammatical errors in a response. No need to be rude. SHS is correct as well. Most EA games do not work with Windows 2000 or with Windows XP. Seems to be related to EA's stance that any OS based on NT is not for the home user and therefore not supported for gaming purposes. Maybe someone will find a way to make the game in question work with Windows XP but personally I hope they don't tell you. Ed

Whistler Registration

I am wondering if registration/activation is required every time the OS is installed. I don't know about all of the rest of you, but I have probably reinstalled Win2k upwards of 25 times in the last year, mostly when some rogue driver screws something up. Is there going to be a problem with MS if I have to reactivate once a month or so? Anybody know? Ed
12. I have found a reg entry called coolbits that works great for me. Allows overclocking just fine up to 220/195 throught the Display Settings. I can email it if you want. edmarvin@hotmail.com
13. You should have an email that they are on freedrive for your download. Ed
14. I have the 1.04's for both Win9x and 2k and the 1.03 for 2k (assuming that the AGP version will also work for the PCI version). LMK if you want me to send them by email or I can put them on www.freedrive.com (or at least try). edmarvin@hotmail.com Ed
15. But at the same time, keep the list reasonable. Some hardware is not relevant for some problems. I don't like seeing a 40 line list of all the stuff someone has in their pc for a problem that involves 2 things. Also, my request is that the specs NOT be lsited as a signature line. I read the sig line once, maybe, and after that I don't read it. If you add or change something in your specs and it is listed as a sig, say so so that it can be noted. (For example, using NTFS on a drive but not having it listed in the first message but then adding it later) Just my 2 cents worth of nothing. Ed

Good News! Compatibility Modes in Win2k

Quote: Originally posted by donald: ...when i went to run Rainbow Six I recieved an error message saying "Rainbow.exe has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down" Same thing for me with several games. Tried NBA Live 2000 (messed up graphics with win2k), Need for Speed - Porsche Unleashed (don't like having to use a crack), and also Constructor (wouldn't install). The last game would install finally under Win2k using the compatability tab on the shortcut but won't play. BUT, Falcon 4 plays fine now without the crash to the desktop after a mission. Don't have to patch it etc. to get it to run now. Ed

Quote: Originally posted by Four and Twenty: yeah I boot in dos using ghost and I am using NTFS. Detonator Driver Update Procedure

Quote: Originally posted by Ronin: Ok??? Am I reading that right? You got rid of your Nvidia card in favor of an ATI card because you where having drivers problems and where to lazy to figuire it out. You need help... hehe Actually didn't get rid of it, jsut moved it to a different machine. I have tried most everything that anyone said to try in order to update the drivers on my machine but inevitably ended up with the same error as the anak1, "sytem cannot find a specified file" which is a pile of brown stuff. I got tired of reinstalling everything just to try out a supposedly updated driver. Seemed like less of a hassle to replace my kids TNT2 with the GeForce2 so that they had better performance. Always need to upgrade something. Keeps the kids happy, no driver issues for me so everyone is happy. Ed

Detonator Driver Update Procedure

I got sick of that same problem with my GeForce2 MX. My solution? Ditch it to the kids computer running Win98SE and get a Radeon. No more driver problems with the GeForce. Of course, the Radeon is different. No driver updates as such anyway so I may have the same troubles if/when there are new drivers for it. Ed
24. I have a firewall but it is a seperate machine. Running Red Hat 6.0 on a 486-50. No performance hit on my network that way. Using McAfee on the kids computer (can't trust them to not accept whatever downloads) but otherwise no virus checker. Don't believe in downloading anything other than drivers. I agree that I can reinstall most everything in a few hours and do so about once a month anyway. Undoubtedly because of some beta driver or just because. Ed
