  1. Need some cash so have the following for sale, preferrably as a set. Adaptec 131U2 UW2 SCSI RAID controller w/ 64meg RAM 2 Compaq/Seagate Cheetah 18.2G 10k RPM UW2 LVD hard drives. Best price on Pricewatch for the controller is $310 but with only 2meg RAM. Best price on Pricewatch for the drives is $139. I have had this setup for about three weeks. Very fast. Is $425 shipped in the US reasonable? Ed
  2. Never mind...got my nice little tax credit from Mr. Bush so this is no longer for sale. Thanks. Ed
  3. So far, under XP RC2, both NBA Live2001 and NFS: PU work just fine with no tweaks, file deletions etc. Tyan Tiger 133, 2x700E @ 933 water cooled, Adaptec AAA-131U2 SCSI RAID, 2x18.2 10k SCSI UW2, Hercules Prohpet 4500, SBLive OEM, 256Meg Kingmax TinyBGA, Teac 12x10x32 CDRW, Toshiba 16x DVD.
  4. How would one go about legally acquiring the corporate version of XP Professional when it comes out? The company I work for is still using NT 4.0 so they will most likely NOT be purchasing it even if I wanted to steal a copy. Ed
  5. Interesting update. Yesterday I did some upgrade work for a friend of mine who has the @home service from AT&T. Before I worked on her computer I went to the http://webservices.cnet.com/bandwidth/ and checked her speed. All of 200 kbps. Substantially slower than my service at my house. My thoughts immediately were that there was something wrong outside...couldn't be any reason for this slow of a speed other than something outside of her house. After doing the work on her computer (she was running WindowsME) and doing a complete format and reinstall of her system (still running WindowsME) her bandwidth test came out at 1850 kbps. Yes, thats right, 1650 kbps faster than before the reinstall. My only conclusion from this is that there are things in the OS and other programs that can cause the service to be slower. In light of this, my question is have you recently reinstalled your OS? Clean install ie: rebuild from scratch? Might be worth a shot. Ed

    Shutdown problem with WinXP RC2

Thats ok. When I click on reboot, my system goes into standby. Tiger 133 Dual 933's Kyro II Prophet 4500 Ed
  7. Actually there are a number of reasons why your service may be slower than it was. First and foremost is the number of subscribers in your area. It is true that the bandwidth is shared among all the people in the area. The more people on it, the slower it can be. Another cause for the slow down can be headend equipment in the cable companys head end. The more Fiber nodes connected to the UBR router, the more bandwidth trying to get through the same pipe. A second or third UBR in the headend can alleviate crowding, but the cost and space required for it may not be available. Another cause can be ingress on the cable lines from outside frequencies. Cracks and damages to the physical cable can allow off air frequency into the shielded cable lines causing interference with the forward and return signals to your cable modem. Usually this can be identified by a visual check of your television set. Any off air broadcast channels will have a ghost or other such motion in the background caused by the ingress. If there are no anomolies on your local abraodcast channels, then there is most likely no ingress. Yet another cause can be water in the cable lines. Could be in your drop line to your house. Could be in the main lines outside. A check of your signal level with a meter can tell you if there is water since it will attenuate the signal. Loose connections can cause problems as well. Also splitting your signal to feed multiple outlets and/or cable modems can attenuate the signal as well. It is true that what the customer deems acceptable download speeds and what the company will work on are two different things. As a Network Technician responsible for the outside lines for the cable company where I live I can attest to that. I have @home service here in the Portland OR area and I have seen my download speeds vary significantly. Have you run the Bandwidth speed test at http://webservices.cnet.com/bandwidth/ I just ran it and had 2008 Kbps. I ran it again and had 435 Kbps. Ran it again and had 635 kbps. So as you can see, bandwidth varies. But the cable company is correct that there is no guarantee of download speeds. Check your contract. It may be different in your area. Ed

For god sakes someone help me!!!

Maybe after some research you would have found that the game requires DirectX version 7 at least. Since the highest version you can get for NT 4.0 using hacks etc. is version 5, there is no way that this game will run on NT 4. Good luck in your endeavors. Ed

    Tiger 133

Anybody used this board with XP? Stable? Any known issues? No one has posted in the compatability section that they have used it with XP so I was wondering if it works. Ed

    Tiger 133

Thanks for your response....I recently acquired one of these boards and am hopeing not to have any problems with it. So far no troubles in Win2k but I like to be prepared. Thanks again. Ed
  11. Haven't tried it nor do I know if it works but....what about booting in safe mode, removing the existing hard drive controller, and then on reboot Win2k "should" find new hardware and install the drivers. All theory of course.... Ed

    Porsche 2000 don't start...

Don't know exactly how to help you on this. Under Win2k, I had to delete the gimme.dll file to run this game no matter what video card I used. I did a clean install of RC1 with my ATI Radeon 64 DDR and installed the game....muns fine without changing anything. Ed

ATA100 HD. But runs like ATA... well 40!

Ok...three seperate systems. System #1: Supermicro P6DBE with dual 700e's @ 933 ATA33 bus 2 IBM 30g 7200rpm ATA 100 drives. Results down the list on Sandra's Disk benchmark are: 30 - 27 - 5 - 27 - 26 - 7 System #2 Abit VP6 with dual 600e's @ 900 ATA100 bus IBM 40g 7200rpm ATA 100 Drive Results down the list on Sandra are: 58 - 37 - 8 - 67 - 31 - 10 System #3 MSI 694D with dual 750's @ 750 ATA66 bus Quantum 26g 5400rpm ATA66 Results down the list on Sandra are: 36 - 19 - 5 - 28 - 19 - 5 As you can see, my first system has a buffered read of 30Mbytes and my second system has 58. Your results you show of 67 - 23 - 6 - 29 - 24 - 7 show reasonable results, considering that all of my systems are running dual procs. A 67 buffered read is more than twice as fast as my ATA33 bus will transfer, even with an ATA100 drive attached to it. Notice that the random reads on all my systems are 8, 5 and 5 with the ATA33 and ATA66 both being 5? Maybe the type of ATA33, ATA66 or ATA100 doesn't matter for this type of test. I posted this to give you an idea of how "old" technology versus "new" technology in ATA standards compares.

I can only run with my original CD. My CloneCD backup will wiork for installing the game but it dumps to the desktop if I try to use the backu8p to run the game. www.gamecopyworld.com has a no cd patch that I have used to run the game without the cd. Don't know exactly if this will help you but it is worth a try. Ed

    Please Answer My Sim Question

Quote: ;( ;( I got an idea too...why dont u get out of your ****ing bad mood, and get that rod out of your ***. Not very nice talk for a newbie, especially since your question refers to a not yet released OS with a game that is made for a different OS. Not all of us are part of the Beta test program nor are willing to download a w***z copy just to try and help somebody who is being rude. Patience is the name of the game here. When/if someone has a fix, if you are polite, they might share it with you. Nice words go a long way, especially if you are the one asking for help. Ed

    Missing 500 MB

When you say you have highlighted all the files, have you highlighted the hidden system files as well (ie: swap file etc.) That can account for 500 mb. Ed

Cas 2 - Cas 3 ram, can you even tell?

Quote: Makes a lot of difference in moving up from CL3 to CL2. Use SiSoft Sandra to benchmark results, before and after changing to CL2 - you will see substantial improvement in CL2. But can you actually "feel" the difference? I can't, but I can see the difference in the Sandra benchmark. Is it faster in real life or only in Sandra Benchmark?

Cas 2 - Cas 3 ram, can you even tell?

I can't tell on my systems without a benchmark to prove it. I have purchased the faster ram just to see if it made a difference and haven't been able to tell "by the seat of my pants". No difference that I can tell. Ed
