    Most Win2k Friendly Vid Card?

Kyosho46vr: You should take your own advice and shut your mouth unless you know what you're talking about. I'm speaking from personal experience because I actually own a Radeon. Do you? Plus, I don't remember seeing a single review of the Radeon running Win2K benchmarks. If you have one throw the link here and I'll read it. I've spent many hours troubleshooting it under Win2K and the end result is it doesn't work. I'm not going to go into my process here because it would take too long. Do a search and you'll see posts by myself and other Radeon users. In fact, go to http://rage3d.com and look in the forum there. There are a couple people who say they've got a Radeon working under Win2k but they are far outnumbered by those suffering from BSOD in D3D games and benchmarks. I'll say it again, stay away from the Radeon. Rob [This message has been edited by Robor (edited 24 August 2000).]

    Considering SBLive for my win2k...

The Platinum has Live Drive and gold connectors. I'm not sure if there's more than that but those are 2 differences that I know of. Rob
  4. System: BE6-2/P3-700/256MB/Radeon 64MB/SBLive Platinum. Fresh install of Win2000Pro Retail, Windows Update to install Critical Updates patch, install SP1. Installed Win2K Radeon drivers from CDROM, installed SBLive! Platinum drivers and latest Liveware for Win2K. All okay so far. Problem is when I run Unreal in D3D mode it crashes or I get a BSOD that hangs the system. Tried using OpenGL and I get shimmering textures all over the place in the flyby. Any ideas? Rob

    Problems with Radeon under Win2000

I've currently got IDE1 & IDE2 disabled in the BIOS. Also have Serial 1 & 2 disabled as well as the Parallel Port. Have the Highpoint controller enabled because I've got an IBM 45GB ATA100 on it for storage. I need the SCSI card because I've got a 9GB IBM UW drive on it (2 partitions - 1 for WinMe the other for Win2K). Also have a Wide SCSI Plextor 40X reader on it. I've never had any performance issues with the CD or hard drives. In fact, my buddy and I compared install times on a few games and my SCSI parts blew his away (100% to 33%). I'm at a friends house right now. I will work on my box when I get home. Thanks! Rob

    Problems with Radeon under Win2000

devils advocate: I took your advice and swapped the SB Live! and SCSI controller. Here's a printout of my IRQ's from System Information. Does this look okay? I see my USB & Live are sharing 12 but I'm using a USB mouse and the Live seems to be working okay. Haven't installed any games yet so I can't confirm success or failure yet. Oh, should I install SP1 then my Radeon drivers again or no. I haven't installed SP1 or any updates yet. Also running with Win2000 SB Live drivers (didn't update or install Liveware). Fingers crossed but not holding my breath! Thanks very much again for the help all! Problems with Radeon under Win2000

I just finished reinstalling Win2K for the 2nd time this week. Seems after flashing my BE6-2 BIOS to the "SH" revision it keeps putting my Highpoint ATA66 controllers on IRQ11 with my SB Live Platinum (listed as Creative SB Live Basic (WDM). The Highpoint was using 14 or 15 before but really likes 11 now and I can't change it in device manager. I'm beyond frustrated at this point. I'm about to blow this MF'er away and load Win98SE on it... Oh, I'm using a BX chipset so this problem isn't chipset related. Rob

    Problems with Radeon under Win2000

devils advocate: Thanks for the posting. I tried that and a lot of other stuff and still can't get Win2K to play Unreal or UT. So far I've flashed the MB BIOS, uninstalled Liveware, uninstalled the Radeon & multimedia stuff, reinstalled the Radeon, tried several different patches of Unreal/UT, tried the D3D patch for Unreal, and duplicated the D3D configuration of da's unreal.ini (tried that in both UT & Unreal). Still the same exact problem... BSOD on the opening screen in ati2dvag.dll. BTW, I can run the DirectX tests and they all complete fine. Also, I was told to try applying DirectX after applying my Radeon drivers again. How? I tried to install DirectX7a and it wouldn't allow it. Is it possible to reapply DirectX in Win2K. Thanks for any advice! Rob

    Problems with Radeon under Win2000

Maybe I should blow away that partition and reformat without installing LiveWare for Win2K? I dunno, at this point I'm at a loss. Some Radeon users are reporting problems under Win2K and others aren't. devils advocate: Did you apply SP1 to Win2K? Are you using the drivers from the CDROM (I'm not aware of any others for Win2K). Have you tried Unreal and/or Unreal Tournament in Win2K using D3D? If so what color depth are you using and what settings under advanced properties? Sorry to ask so many questions but I want to get to the bottom of this. Thanks! Rob

    Problems with Radeon under Win2000

I suspect the Live Platinum because there's another Radeon user on another Forum with the same kinda issues. Same BSOD crash and same "ati2dvag.dll" causing it (sad that I know that .dll by name now). That's what leads me to believe it's a driver issue that only comes up with SB Live using D3D under Win2K. What's really got me puzzled is I can run UT under WinME with D3D and it's blazing fast. If I try Unreal it's slow as a dog. Switch Unreal to OpenGL and it's doing like 73FPS @ 1024x768x32. I know Unreal does better in D3D than OpenGL so that doesn't make sense. I've got the "Final" UT patch. Is there a D3D patch after that? Rob

    Coppermine in old BX board?

    Coppermine in old BX board?

Be careful with a coppermine in a P2-B. I got my Dad a Slot1 600E and it wouldn't POST. After about an hour of troubleshooting I looked on the web. I came across an article where someone was having the same problem (wish I still had the link but if you search you should be able to find it). Anyway, the solution was to use a FC-PGA CPU in a Slocket where you could manually boost the voltage. Luckily I had a 600E FC-PGA in an IWill slocket in one of my machines so I traded him (and got a cB0 in the process). I bumped the voltage to 1.8 (it had a Golden Orb on it so I wasn't concerned about heat) via the jumpers and it POSTed right up. Rob

Sticky Key's in W2K Poll Survey!!! Please read!!!!

I just installed my first game (Rogue Spear) under this fairly fresh bootup of Win2K Pro (final). Someone suggested setting the optimization to backround rather than apps so I did that. Installed, patched, ran game. Even when I configured my keys they were sticking. The meter for sound would stick down and go all the way one direction. Okay, knew it was gonna suck then. Anyway, I set my keys and ran the game. First shot I fired nearly emptied my magazine. Well, games suck under Win2000 and that's a fact. It's a well known problem so hopefully MS is working on a resolution. Right now the only option is to dual boot and play games under Win98. In fact, I'm going to do that right now... Rob

Sticky Key's in W2K Poll Survey!!! Please read!!!!

Here's my deal... Old PS2 Compaq Keyboard, Older PS2 Logitech Trackman Marble (no wheel) w/Win2K drivers. Games with sticky keys... Unreal Tournament, Rogue Spear, and Tribes. Those are the only games I've played under Win2000 and all of them have sticky keys so I don't know of any games that don't have the problem. Rob

Has MS bothered to fix the "sticky keys" on W2k?

AVP_SAV: Is this a confirmed fix for this sticky key problem? This is the first I've read about a workaround. I haven't even bothered to install any games on my fresh load of Win2000 because of this problem and it's the only thing that forces me to dual boot Win2K & Win98SE. Rob

    Piracy...

I have to disagree with your point about Advanced Server and piracy here. I do think you're right that most people who post here using Advanced Server are probably not legit owners. That said I'm also willing to bet that they are also using it at home for nothing more than testing and learning. It's not as though everyone here works for a company who is willing to let them tinker and play with hardware and software that costs that much. So what does it hurt of a tech gets ahold of a copy to play with at home? I seriously doubt Microsoft would even care about someone using it like that. Considering the competition they are getting from Linux they may even encourage a person doing that. Now a business running on it is another story but that wasn't the focus of the topic here. Rob PS - My copy of Pro is legit because I won it from the Microsoft giveaway.

    Sticky keys on Rogue Spear

Yes, this sticky-key thing happens in a lot more than just Rogue Spear. I've had it happen in Rogue Spear, Tribes, and UT myself... This is the only reason I dual boot Win2000 and Win98SE. Hopefully they will fix this soon... Rob

    Mouse still sticks!

Like everyone else I've got the sticky key problem. I get it in Tribes and Rogue Spear. Still dual booting until this is fixed... Rob

Rogue Spear and RC 2 Voodoo 2000 PCI

I used the V3 driver fix and still couldn't get Rogue Spear to run. It bombed out right after switching to 3D mode. Never got video. Then what Shoefly said made me think... My drives are different when booting from Win2K to Win98. I manually searched the registry on my Win2K bootup and found that the paths were all wrong. Manually edited them and got it working. Thanks guys!! Rob

    Autoplay

Near as I can figure you can't. At least it's not as simple as in Win9x where you just uncheck "autoinsert notification". I looked at the help file yesterday and found that the solution is to hold down the shift key when inserting a CDROM into the drive. Kind of a weak workaround if you ask me. Rob

    SMP with Unreal.

Unreal does not support SMP. I believe it was Tim Sweeny that answered that question a long time ago in the forum. It does detect multiple CPU's on start but it does not take advantage of them. As far as I know Unreal Tournament is based on the same engine as Unreal so it shouldn't support SMP either. Unless they add support later which I doubt... Rob

    NHL 2000 and Win2K build 2072

I know it's not much help but I can tell you the same thing happens in Win2000Pro build 2128 with a V3. Rob

    Win2k, AbitBP6 and Voodoo3 problems

Stingray... I have Win2000 Pro (2072) and managed to get Glide working with my Voodoo3 3000. I can play both Tribes and Unreal but they are slower in Win2K than Win98. To get it working I had to use some specific drivers and a customized .inf file. Pretty sure I got both links from either this site or betanews.com. It was a tedious process but worth it to finally stick with Win2K 100%. In fact, I just ghosted my old SCSI drive to my new one and my Win98 bootup quit working (was dual booting Win2K/Win98). I don't even care as Win2K does everything I need now. I'm using a BP6 with dual celerons o/c'ed to 508 for stability. Rob

2072 and cable modem dont get along

I've got Win2000 Pro build 2072 working with RoadRunner right now. Some things to check... Make sure all of your TCP/IP settings are at default. I know if I tried to specify anything RR Logins would fail. Make sure you have it doing DHCP and you don't have DNS or a domain assigned. Another thing... Do you have more than 1 NIC in your system? If so, make sure that RR is trying to use the correct NIC. I had a problem with that under WinNT4 but Win2K hasn't given me any problems there. One more thing... Do you have more than 1 PC connected to RR? I'm using a hub and have my cable jacked into the x-over port. Then I jack 3 systems into my hub (10baseT only) and connect to RR that way. Of course you have to pay for an extra 2 IP's to do this but that's another story. Anyway, I sometimes have problems where I can connect 1 or 2 of the PC's but the 2nd or 3rd will not login until I shut down all PC's and reboot the cablemodem. Can't think of anything else right now... Good Luck! Rob

    Tribes under Win2000 Pro?

I've got a V3 3000 using the .inf file from Betanews under Win2000Pro. I can play Tribes and do get 3D with Glide but my controls don't work properly. If I use the jetpack and fly straight up then try to move in any direction while still holding down the jetpack key it doesn't work. Just keep going straight up. Same exact control setup works fine in Win98. Any ideas? Thanks! Rob
