    installing d-link dwl-g510 in fedora core 4--problems

OK. Back after the holiday. Reinstalled Fedora 4 and am running version 2.6.14.1.1637_FC4. Have downloaded the needed madwifi files per your white paper. Now the install for 1.9.6.0-18 fails for lack of key. This is a new problem. ideas? thx.
  4. I did a reinstall--Fedora 4--and installed RealAudio10GOLD and JAVA (for Mozilla, to view videos in news websites). Neither will come up now after doing a "yum -y update," which apparently included a kernel update. (2.6.14-1.1637_FC4) What do I do to keep these apps and others current with kernel updates? thx.

    installing d-link dwl-g510 in fedora core 4--problems

Y'know, it seems like there is a trap in every step. I tried the steps you posted in your link, and stumbled on what everyone (but me, apparently) understands as "you will also need to pre-install the corutils package before using yum, before doing the actual installation." OK. WTF does "pre-install the corutils" mean?

    installing d-link dwl-g510 in fedora core 4--problems

I do note that the "filename: /lib/modules/2.6.13-1.1532_FC4/updates/net/ath_pci.ko" are the same as my kernel version when I did the "modinfo." I am sure it is a 32-bit processor. I must have grabbed the wrong driver in the rpm list.

On further review...my downloaded driver may be the wrong type? madwifi-kmdl-2.6.13-1.1532_FC4-0.9.6.0-18.rhfc4.at.x86_64.rpm should I have downloaded the .i386 and not the .x86_64? how can I uninstall and correct this? thx.

    installing d-link dwl-g510 in fedora core 4--problems

In the rpm's, what is the difference between a "madwifi-kmdl" and a "madwifi" in the list of rpm downloads at http://atrpms.net/dist/fc4/madwifi/ ? a few of the several "madwifi-kmdl" match my running kernel, one of which is the package I had rpm'd. from post 1741: "yum'd a driver madwifi-kmdl-2.6.13-1.1532_FC4-0.9.6.0-18.rhfc4.at.x86_64.rpm and it installed OK." I also note that there are rpm versions with "...FC4smp-0.9.6.0..." "...FC4xen0-9.6.0..." and "...FC4-0.9.6.0..." which only creates more confusion for me. It seems like every step forward is met with two steps back.

    installing d-link dwl-g510 in fedora core 4--problems

...getting discouraged...went to a console (terminal window) as root user and typed; modprobe ath_pci I cd'd to the root, and as su, it didn't return to a command prompt... it returned: [root@localhost /]# modprobe ath_pci bash: modprobe: command not found (!?) now i'm trying to figure out why 'modprobe' isn't recognized... 'dleon' pointed me to a couple tar.gz files to get madwifi done, so i may venture into that arena...since the yum and rpm isn't getting me where i want to go. thx, rlm

    installing d-link dwl-g510 in fedora core 4--problems

Thank you, danleff and dleon. more difficulty...when i go to get madwifi i get error "The file "xxx" is a source RPM which cannot be installed with system-config-packages," where xxx is the appropriate filename. so i guess the problem i have is newbie download technique. ideas? i have successfully rpm's other files; i guess it is just 'system-config-packages'? thx. rlm

OK. Tried downloading the rpm and the kmdl...they loaded and apparently installed without error. When using the pull-down "Desktop->System Settings->Network" menu, and starting to activate a wireless connection, it still shows up as 'eth1' rather than 'ath-0', and the Atheros/D-Link wifi interface doesn't show up in the menu of possible cards. help? thx. rlm

    installing d-link dwl-g510 in fedora core 4--problems

To clarify on installation...I _upgraded_ to what the DVD said would be FC4...but the 'uname -a' result says it is FC3? maybe 'upgrade' result is different from re-install...

    installing d-link dwl-g510 in fedora core 4--problems

I installed what I thought was FC4 using the DVD from LinuxUser magazine issue 52. Lookos to be an FC3 install, tho. Uname -a result: Linux OU812ICU 2.6.12-1.1380_FC3 #1 Wed Oct 19 20:34:13 EDT 2005 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux Card is D-Link Airplus-G DWL-G510, which I had looked up and found as Atheros chip. HW ver B1, FW ver 2.10. last time I tried another rpm (madwifi-kmdl-2.6.12-1.1380_FC3-0.9.6.0-18.rhfc3.at.x86_64.rpm) it installed without error. Still don't think kernel source installed is done. thx rlm
