  1. There are a couple of approaches to this Force windows to install/use the wrong driver - (install the last ADI drivers inf file on your system , Update by saying dont search/find it, "I have disk", select the inf file you installed, yes just do it yes reeeeallly etc etc) choosing another ADI model with the same or LOWER resolution/refresh rate range. A bit of research therefore needed. Aim too LOW rather than risking going too high on resolution/rate [leading to a blank screen]. Read up/print out proceedure on Safe Mode and recovering from the wrong video settings NOW before you try this!!!!. You may need to fudge the colour profile too if it looks wrong, but you probably won't notice if you dont have a colour problem now. Or Since my eyes at least cannot see any flicker at rates above c 75Hz the only thing you are achieving by selecting 100Hz is a busy graphics card and a hot monitor. (The card may well be quietly reducing texture detail etc to deliver these rates at higher resolutions too). Use the rate override at say 80Hz and increase the resolution you play in instead for a more visible thrill! HTH

Win XP SP2 - no sound card detected

This may help, or at least add some petrol to the fire I have a Realtek AC97 soundchip. Windows XP SP2 persists in detecting it as a C-Media chip and promptly loads it's own beloved drivers that produce the sort of symptoms you report and of course no sound. It doesn't show up as a device manager flag because windows is convinced it's found the best driver for the job. Copy the realtec drivers to the hard drive and install them via the supplied package, install new driver manually choosing the realtec option and you should be fine unless you stray back to windows update again HTH

    Norton AntiVirus 2005 Activation

I'm not entirely sure what is driving this question. If you are going to re-install XP and all your old apps just do the same with Norton and re register(see below). If you are going to use Ghost or Drive Image etc to make a clone c:\drive for the NEW machine you will have a few happy hours dealing with hardware/licence changes, conflicts etc and most likely end up re-installing everything anyway It has been my experience that 1) On an image for e.g. a Hard drive upgrade only on the same machine Norton still demands online re-registration even when you have made such a perfect disk image/restore on the same machine that it has 'fooled' WPA and everything else etc. 2) That re-registration of Norton only takes seconds online, often recovers or reacquires your old registration information in an 'updated or re-installed' system and happens online from a registration prompt from Norton. There is no problem with re-installing your original software on a new machine. The problem comes if two machines with the same Licence number both try to access 'new' (vs the back cataloge of)live-updates. 3) That on reinstall it either resets the expiry to what it was/should have been by now or on (sadly rare occasions with a completely empty new system gives you a new 12 months - although this reset itself to less later in one case (cunning that . . ). I have never 'lost' any paid for subscription time on any recent versions despite disk swaps, reinstalls etc. 4) That it's really not worth trying to work around any of this on Norton AV or NIS as my attempts have usually just resulted in live-update or something else related to subscriptions failing to work afterwards. HTH
  4. Firstly try adding the following to the address in the explorer bar \content.ie5 So you have something like C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5 That may show you a little more of those 9 folders Curiosity aside - you have a cache out-of-control-situation which has been a problem with IE for a while. To resolve it (for a while) resist the temptation to delete all in sight as it just confuses the (probably also bloated) index.dat file even more. Create a new user (mechanic), make that user an administrator, Restart and logon to that account. you can now delete the whole temporary Internet files folder under your normal profile (c: Documents and settins etc) and when you re-login as you all will be recreated in rather better shape HTH B

    Problem with IDE

Hi. you can install XP directly even with only an upgrade disk -(You may choose to format or wipe the c: drive if it is clear of data, email files etc.) In any case just start the XP install by booting from the XP upgrade disk and show it the W98 disk you have when it asks for proof. Trust me it works and leaves less mess than upgrading a W98 launchpad :-) DVD drives are wierd when mixed with bioses and windows. I would not believe it (or explain it) but numerous people say you need to make the DVD READER the secondary IDE MASTER in that type of configuration - so it must be true at least sometimes, and if you are having probs leave the Writer out of the case until the rest of it works . . If still no joy try entering the bios and selecting default settings and re-boot HTH
  6. A similar discussion on http://www.tek-tips.com/viewthread.cfm?qid=1119555&page=1 may be of interest. Note recent reports of these problems started mid -august after a gap of a couple of years since Nero got fixed. I've had a similar prob on 2 PC's and my conclusion is that it is not any one programme to blame: The roster I've assembled currently from my own tests and the web included InCD, Nero and musicmatch Jukebox10 with a side swipe at Norton. Note I had this problem and only have the last two programmes, not InCD. I also had a similar but different problem from too many version of messenger on a system with no burner at all. I am concluding the problem is TOO MANY programmes hooking into the explorer shell or adding file filters, and the impact of that on EXPLORER and/or Norton so some programme (pick from a list) is the last straw, especially if it has a complicated relationship with explorer and there are other complicated-shell-linked programmes on the system already (and maybe install order matters too. I won't rule Norton out but disabling it doesn't help (although this doesn't uninstall it's filters so . . . ) HTH
  7. Hi all Interesting to find this as i have two XP PC's both doing this in slightly different ways started in the last few weeks PC1 has a toshiba DVD ROM which wil not update the left(disk title) or right side(files) of explorer when a new disk is added. I have done the microsoft autoplay wizard and settings to death and un/reinstalled the DVDROM and entire IDE channel drivers. No joy. Also uninstalled my CD writer software (record now 6.7.1) without joy (having failed to find the reinstall disk for some time :-). A USB DVD writer is completely unaffected by this effect Interestingly my DVD player software (cyberlink) will spot the new disk, offer to restart where it left and play the new title while Explorer determindly insists the old disk is still there! PC2 is a different motherboard, generally different build etc, no DVD writer at all. There the left side of explorer is stuck despite refreshing re-opening etc but the right side does update. Unfortunately the left side seems to control autoplay so DVD's wont auto play if the last disk was an audio one. There seems to be a run of similar queries on the web starting mid August. Has anyone else got Norton NIS, Acrobat 7.0 or messenger 7.5 which are the only updates I recall both machines have had except Microsoft update ones?
