    nf7 s won't boot

    I'm helping my friend build a new box and we hit a problem. no matter what I try, the pc won't boot. everything's getting power, the power led on the motherboard is on, but when I push the power button, the power supply turns on, but no picture. I've tried three different video cards, and two different monitors, but I get no results. I also don't get any error beeps, so I'm thinking the board's dead. maybe anyone here could help? thanks

    is it the modem?

    to alec: my mac problem and this were happening at the same time. I had to fix this in order to fix my mac..which I've accomplished it might be a virus though...I didn't think of that, and I really should've, cause I remember reinstalling xp one day at a lan party and got hit with blaster within a minute. lol, my friend's box, who spread the worm to me, brought down the whole network for 4 hours! XD anyways.... I'll either install norton corporate and scan, or run visit trend micro's site and do an online scan.     got another question for you all.. ^^;

    well, I guess I'll update on this little 'quest' of mine. I got all the files I needed transferred through aim, just in time, too; the little 6gb drive in the mac finally killed itself on the next reboot! kinda pissed me off there ¬.¬; it had a good life though..6 years, at least! so, I had to sacrifice my 40gb maxtor to the apple toy. I can't wait 'till it's officially mine though (it's still 'technically' my sister's). I'm gonna throw a huge hsf on it's tiny 333mhz core and overclock the hell out of it! I'm gonna try for the 500mhz range, and try to install osx on it lol a future note to anyone who finds themselves needing to do this (not bloody likely ): dropstuff all the documents/apps/preferences you want into one large archive, then transfer it. I didn't do this, and xp renamed all of the apps and preferences I transferred, and now they're useless ;(

    Windows XP styles

    you want to use non-m$ themes on your box without third-party apps, eh? not too difficult to do. google "uxtheme patch" this patch'll allow you to use different themes and styles without stylexp. windowblinds skins won't work with this method. I've used this method back before sp1, but had to stop because they didn't have an updated patch for sp1. however, I'm looking at the search results and it looks like they updated the patch finally. alternatively, you could look into a shell replacement. I prefer this method, as I hate the way xp's shell is layed out. Blackbox is a pretty good one. I'm using it now. takes a little getting used to, but I like it much more than the xp shell $.02
  5. wow...wasn't expecting all this..... alec, I knew you had a hardware ram drive. read it somewhere on one of these threads; that's what made me remember about these things. I was originally looking at flash hdd's and pci ram drives a year ago, but I decided against it. I didn't think a flash drive would be good for the os, but maybe I'm wrong. as to the person who said using ram for your page file and temp folders is retarded; I did it, and photoshop seemed to like it a hell of a lot more than my separate page partition. this was just a crazy little experiment I decided to do out of lack of sleep and curiosity. plus, I was bored. lol, I did notice though that a couple of my games lagged, so I changed it back....more or less. I just have my temp directories on the ram drive now. I'm not exactly familiar with this stuff. I'm just working with what knowledge I have, plus a few new facts here and there. I've wanted near-instant boot times, and a lightning-fast page file since I first heard of the ram drive (well, ram disk..saw it on my sister's old mac. kicked ass, it did!) unfortunately, I'm a 17 year old kid with no money. ^^; I'm going to have to wait until I can afford a pci ram drive and/or a flash hdd. anyway...thanks for the input. I'll keep this software ram drive for my temp directories. and I'll stick to my page partition, only because I can't successfully do what I want with the ammount of ram I have. hm...maybe steal that 20gb laptop drive from my dell..see what I can do with that....
  6. I have 768mb of ram and running xp. would it be good if I moved the page file to a ram disk? say, form a 100mb ramdisk and use 90mb for the page and 10mb for my temp directories..? or is 768 not enough ram to have a ram disk? from what I've read, a ram disk page file would be faster than a separate page partition..and I'm all about inexpensive, quick loading times! only disadvantage I could see with it is it wipes your page file and temp directories after a reboot, but I'm also reading that that's not exactly a bad thing.. I'll be using this ram disk thanks!

    got another question for you all.. ^^;

    ftp...never thought of that.. lol, I was just about to archive the stuff on my gmail account too I'll try the ftp idea..if it works for xboxes, it should work for macs thanks!
  10. I'm trying to figure out how to transfer files from my mac running os 9.2 to my xp machine..so far I've read that it'd be easier to emulate os 8 on my xp box and do it that way, but I don't think that's the only way. can anyone help with this?

    network install 2k?!

    it's not a laptop, it's a dell optiplex which uses laptop parts...but thanks for the links!
  12. is this possible? I have a dell optiplex without a cd-rom, and I would rather not spend $150+ on the required laptop cd drive.. ¬.¬; thanks in advance!

    is it the modem?

    well, it seems to be working fine when set to 10mb full mode (I'm on the pc now). now, if only it would work on 100...oh well. bittorrent doesn't need 100mb of bandwidth, and neither does shared music. now to figure out how to browse the network on os9... thanks again for the advice!

    is it the modem?

    I don't think it's the cable, because I've tried directly connecting the modem to the pc and that worked. manually setting the speed...will try that in a few minutes. and yes, they're set for dhcp thx for the advice!

    is it the modem?

    I've been trying to solve this problem for a week now, and I just don't get it... I bought a linksys router to split my roadrunner connection between an iMac and my pc running xp sp1. when I set it up, I got a connection on both computers, but for some reason, the connection was really slow on my pc. google timed out, it was so slow. yet the mac is fine! I figured it was windows, so I reinstalled. that did nothing but waste 4 hours of my time. so I returned the router, thinking it was defective, and bought a dlink. same thing happened. I even went out and bought a usb-to-ethernet adapter to see if that would help, but to no avail could it be the modem? I've read on this site that that could be it. my modem's a toshiba pcx 2500; router's a Dlink DI-604. I'd call my isp for help, but they hung up on me as soon as I mentioned the word 'router'. apparently, they don't offer help on network problems, or anything... (just a guess, since they've hung up on me twice now) thanks for your time, and this site. I'm finding it to be very useful and entertaining l0st
