New to linux, trouble accessing Internet

I tried turning off the firewall, but it makes no difference. I have DSL, and the set up prompts for a gateway address, which is set properly. Does a host name need to be specified as well? Sprint never sent that, saying the IP address was all that was needed.

New to linux, trouble accessing Internet

KMail appeared to mail out okay, though it never reached the email address I sent it to. It might be waiting there now though as a returned or unsendable email. (To access this site, I have to reboot to Windows).

New to linux, trouble accessing Internet

Neither browser will connect. I keep getting "Cannot find server." It reminds me of a problem I had once with Windows IE not accessing the Internet because of a quirky ZoneAlarm feature that wasn't apparent, but that of course isn't the case here. Seems like something in KDE won't let a user or even root access the Internet, though as I said, I can ping with no problem. Hadn't tried email though. I'll reboot to Linux and try. Thanks.

    Swap file not being used

Swap file is 500 MB give or take a few MB. Processor is Celeron 1.1 GHz. On the same system, Windows 98 runs like lightning. But I can tell from the KDE utility that runs with this version that RAM is running at full capacity, the system is running very slowly, yet the swap use is zero. I can try to open more and more applications, but once RAM is full, nothing else will open, and swap is never used. Linux is very slow to load as well.

    Swap file not being used

Just new to Linux, loaded Mandrake 9.2 successfully, but system runs very slowly. The KDE monitor shows the swap usage as zero at all times, and shows RAM nearly full (256 MB). Yet on initialization and termination, Swap is listed as being started and stopped, and is present on the hard drive configuration. Is there a reason Swap would have been installed and then disabled? I reloaded the OS and still have the problem.
  6. Hello. I just installed linux Mandrake 9.2 and am unable to get it to recognize the internet. I can ping the DSL server successfully, but when I open a browser, it says it can't find any URL I enter. Correct IP address is present in the system configuration. Does a user need to be given privileges somehow to access the Web? Seems like KDE must be the roadblock. Or am I way off?

    Sluggish Mandrake 9.2

Processor is Celeron 1.1 GHz. It was a fresh install of Mandrake, not an overlay. Yes, perhaps I should have left well enough alone, but the difference is so marked between Mandrake 9.0 and 9.2 that something important must not be set up properly now. It takes ten or more seconds to open even the most basic applications. Thanks.

    Sluggish Mandrake 9.2

I'm just making the final switch from M$ to Linux. Had Mandrake 9.0 in a dual boot with Windows, just toyed with it for a while and it worked fine, then replaced it with Mandrake 9.2. Newer version runs MUCH slower than 9.0 did, and much slower than W98. Takes it ten or more seconds to access the CDROM or the floppy drive. Have 256 MB RAM, and an intact swap partition of 480 MB, though "Top" shows none of it being used. DMA is activated for that drive. Does anyone have any ideas? There are 70 processes running after boot, but only one active, though I'm too new to this to judge what that means. Thanks.
