  3. PAT and P4 hyperthreading vs Dual Xeon performance. Assume both motherboards are the latest ASUS incarnations: P4C800-E and PC-DL P4C800-E is 800 FSB and single CPU PC-DL is 533 FSB and dual CPU assuming 2 gigs of ECC DDR400 (4 pieces of 512) and one P4 3.0 vs two Xeon 3.0 for the purposes of gaming which one is the better performer? for the purposes of desktop muckety muck which one is the better performer? for the purposes of 2d graphics like photoshop7 and painter8 which one is the better performer? I don't care about 3d. I've heard two conflicting opinions. While XP itself has some kind of support for multiple CPUs do programs have to have their own internal support for multiple processorys to gain from dual xeon? TIA

Under XP Pro (or XP 2K3) which is the least problematic defrag tool OTHER than the native service. I currently use O&O defrag. I especially enjoy the stealth mode defrag. (defrag while playing intensive video games or the like) what do you use and why? TIA

    audiophile input requested

ah.. audiophiles in the forum... excellent! I have some nice infinity speakers. I've thought about jacking them into my soundcard but I'm frightened of the risk of damage from loudly spiking PC audio is there some kind of audio filter I can install inline between soundcard and costly home stereo gear? like APC is to powerfiltering? what, in the opinion of your audiophiles, is the best way to wire home audio gear to one's 4 channel PC audio card? TIA

    AV oftware Comparison needed

NAV is a resource HOG. Expect slowdowns of up to 15%. It's a great choice if you need idiot proof software. Zero user intervention is required for updates and it catches most stuff. It also unleashes a MONSTER to assure proper licensing. McAfee is low impact, also runs seamless upgrades. version 5 is evil. trend micro is very low impact but can be system intrusive installing crappy bits of firewall software even when the user chooses not to install the full product. registry hacking required to make it play nicely. not for the novice user. on occasion CPU spike to 100 on startup. NOD is good on demand. there really is no cause to continuously run AV software if the user has a modicum of common sense. Surfing with an HTML proxy like, oh, say proxomitron or privoxy will cut out the need entirely. Again common sense will combat email threats as well. though I've mentioned Disruptor OL in another thread, http://disruptor.de , it's a plugin for Outlook. It has a cool feature called "secure" that converts HTML to text while retaining HTML formatting and layout (bye bye threats). there are a few sites that rate the effectiveness of engines at spotting threats. My brain hurts now otherwise I could recall two or three.

    802.11g 108 Mbps

is Netgear currently the only manufacturer to have any 802.11g 108 Mbit gear? WGT624 is the base unit. it's Wifi cert for 802.11g (54 Mbit) and it's PCMCIA card runs proprietary (?) full duplex any 54 Mbit device will play nicely apparently

    SafeDisc 2 Compatible CD Recorders

after spending $60 for the privilege of using the code on the CD I own (software is licensed) I'd hate to have to buy it again after wear and tear or reckless friends. it's my legal right to backup my legally licensed software. Alcohol 120% is awesome software that will overcome many protections.

    SPAM

I **hate** spam. but with a little common sense and good software you can banish your spam. use disposable email to sign up for crap, like webboards, product info, or anything else that you only need the first few emails from: http://spamgourmet.com http://spamhole.com http://spammotel.com If you're saavy you can install your own copy of SpamGourmet use outlook? get this AWESOME plugin http://disruptor.de use another email client? get this spam filtering proxy http://spampal.com use an OS other than windows? install SpamAssassin http://SpamAssassin.org option four: hunt down the spammer and hurt him. jk create an email user that's NOT a dictionary word

    Email

If these people have actually requested information from you then great otherwise you'll experience problems with clientside spam filtering if you stick to BCC email broadcasts and the like. Why not use an online mailing list manager?

    What is True Vector Engine?

yet another reason to avoid zonealarm like the plague. you'll likely experience fun problems trying to get any other software firewall to work.

    Bypassing CRC when copying

bypass CRC? Why on earth would you ever want to do so? That's like not using ECC ram because non-ECC is slightly faster. If you like errors then use an overclocked AMD.. or just an AMD it sounds like either the CDR itself is damaged or your reader doesn't like the CD. Are you using a standard CD reader or are you using the SAME CDwriter used to author the CD? There are a few utilities that "bypass" the default failed read timeout and slow down the read device to incrementally read off the files. Offhand I cannot recall the names but a google search for something like "read damaged CDs" might help.

What is the Best Working Firewall for w2k3 standard edition?

I supposed it depends on your needs. a physical firewall appliance keeps stuff out a firewall application keeps track of outbond traffic and keeps most stuff out as a sneaky program can run off it's own stack a software based solution might not be your best bet. stay away from ZoneAlarm. Why? Ask your self why every review site that allows public comments has >50% complaints with horrific problems. I suggest Agnitum Outpost Pro 2.0 agnitum.com there's also a free version If you go the physical appliance route stay away from low end crap like LinkSys, Dlink, and SMC. The lowest cost entry point for reliable, solid stuff is netgear.com -- be sure you get the pro series with SPI if you want a bit more soho power (depending on the number of ports you need) sonicwall.com netscreen.com low end crap is like PCS. it works when it works. People who back linksys are also usually the people who defend overclocking. hope this helps
