Hey, Under KDE in SuSE 8.2 (i am also using 8.2) you have the KDE Control Panel - choose sounds and multimedia and alter the sytem sounds - you can change/disable the start up sound in there somewhere - i'd love to give you a walkthru (but my uni uses Windows) what sort of sound set up are you using? on board or PCI?
