    Solve my Problem Please

Quote: Hello I am a new user. I want to use linux Red Hat or Mandrake. I want to buy a MSI Motherboard MS-6378. It is shown compatible with Mandrake in the Mandrake Website but it is not shown anywhere in other websites. Secondly I have a 60.0 GB Hard Drive. Its Manufacturer is Western Digital. Its model# is WD-600. The Hard Drive compatibility is not shown in any linux website. So is it Compatable with Linux? OF course, the HD is compatible. For the motherboard, go to newegg.com (Great prices and great service).
  2. Quote: Hi folks.. Is it possible to import my e-mail and addressbook from MS Outlook into Evolution ?? Open an IMAP mail account here: http://www.fastmail.fm IMAP is server-based mail. Configure it in outlook by following the instructions found here: http://kurianja.fastmail.fm/ Now move all your mail from your INBOX to your fastmail account. Go to Linux and configure evoluiton to use IMAP email. Voila, your email is available in both Windows and Linux and synchronized all the time as IMAP is a server based solution. This means anything you send from Windows you will see in Linux and viceversa. Good day.
  3. Quote: topic says it all, just looking for something to switch over to rather than have to switch hard drives (cant resize this part.) Linwood If you don't need the NTFS partition, delete it. IF you do, Mandrake 9.1 allows you to resize your NTFS partition and create empty space where you may install your Linux system. It goes without saying that Linux performs best with its native filesystems. XFS, JFS, ext3 and Reiserfs are all good and stable. I recommend ext3 for backwards compatibility if you are just beginning to dabble in Linux. Best of luck

    Install problem wRH 8.0

Quote: This is an update. I replaced my motherboard with a Gigabyte ga-vax. RH 8.0 installed perfectly. Now am running quite nicely. Now dealing with the modem. But I have greater confidence. Cool, I am glad it worked for you. You have a great attitude about this. People usually get deter at the first sign of trouble. Linux hardware support gets better every day. My laptop has now better support under Linux than Windws. Runs cooler and faster. This wasn't the case when I bought it. The most important lesson is to research any purchase in advance to make sure that your hardware is compatible. If it is, a Linux install is a breeze. Everything is configured and all that is left is to sit down and enjoy the computer. Besides looking at HW compatibilit lists, you can also look at what hardware is being used by system builders that support Linux. Anyway, welcome onboard.

    Mandrake9.1 RC !

Quote: To whomever: Has anyone experienced problem setting/changing mouse configuration with this product. During install I set the mouse configuration,(Misumi PS2 scroll) test it, ok it and when install is done the configuration has changed. Attempting to correct using HardwareDrake does not work. Mandrake is less than interested. Thanks. Use 9.0 stable, report the bug or wait for the final. Your choice.

    microsoft designed games on linux?

Quote: up intill reading this forum, I had not clue linux could play windows games.....that was my only thing that made me want to keep my microsoft software....wow...ok....I've managed to get so far as pulling up the cdrom files, when I try to run anything it says nautilaus *sp?* cannot display viewers etc. Does redhat 8.0 have this 'wine' program installed allready? If not where do I find the page to d/l, sorry for all the questions but also can I d/l through windows *for now* and put it on a floppy to use in linux Transgaming is your friend: http://www.transgaming.com/ This is the easiest way. You may want to check out some of the native Linux games. I would also encourage you to give KDE a shot, as I find it an easier entry point for people who are new to Linux. Best of luck

    Linux compatible hardware

Quote: Hi ! I am looking for a ISDN and a WLAN with USB interface and a TV-tuner/grabber-card ( PCI ) with drivers for Linux, but this seems hard to find.... Anyone have any suggestions ? I have heard the Hauppage cards, I think that's how you spell it, are well supported. Can you please post back your findings ? Thanks
  9. Quote: Hello, I am new to this forum, but it looks helpfull! I am having problems loading ML 9.0 onto my new VIA C3 gigapro system. I found some work-arounds at the Mandrake site, but I am looking for a solution to a install problem. Apparently ML 9.0 detects the VIA chip as a i686 ship, when it is in fact more like a i586 chip. So you need to load the 2.2.x kernel. No Problem there. But as soon as I get the Boot Loader install section it freezes. It gives me the option to install LiLO and GRub ( i chose LiLo graphical), but during the installation it freezes. any ideas why this is happening? thnx, Axo Look at their erratas. This is a known issue. Otherwise, I am running the latest beta without significant issues. YOU could use that or wait for the final to come out, which should be in about six weeks.

I finally got it installed BUT i need help

Quote: Ok I finally got my mandrake 9 installed But i can't log on when i get to the part were it wants a login and password it won't go past that screen. I type in Root for a login and the my password but it says login incorrect any ideas. And also is there a way to go around all the dos type screens before the login and get right to the good stuff Thanks Art Are you sure you cap locks key is not on and that you are logging in correctly? BTW, logging in as root is a bad idea. Create a user account as soon as you can and use that for day to day use of the system.

    Mandrake 9.0 hatest i845E + ICH4

Quote: I managed to get Mandrake 9.0 installed again and got the same PCI resource collision error and as a result couldn't see my IDE devices on the ICH4 controller. I could use the promise controller for the install and that is what I did. Once I got it installed I installed the new kernel and ran lilo. When I booted the new kernel it picked up the ICH4 cotroller and other devices and enabled DMA on them but I have a big problem that my newbie experience is too little. I get a Kernel Panic when Linux attempts to mount filesystems. Could this be because with the new kernel and my other drives are recognised, the device code (hda, hdb, hdc you get the picture) have changed. My IDE config is Intel Primary Master - 40GB (not detected during install - but set as "hda" with new kernel) Intel Primary Slave - None Intel Secodary Master - CD-RW (not detected during install - but set as "hdc" with new kernel) Intel Secondary Slave - None Promise Primary Master - 80GB (detected as hda during install - but set as "hde" with new kernel) Promise Primary Slave - None Promise Secondary Master - 20GBLinux (detected as hdc during install - but set as "hdg" with new kernel) Promise Secondary Slave - DVD (not detected during install - but set as "hdh" with new kernel) You see my Linux boot drive partition changes from "hdc5" to hdg5" with the kernel versions. How do I get around this if that is the problem? YOur intuition is absolutely correct. You need to edit your fstab to correct the drive mappings. the fstab can fe bound in /tc/fstab. Do this in one of two ways, go into rescue mode or disconnect the electrical molex connectors to the problematic drives until you fix the fstab. best of luck.

    Shareing files

Quote: Ok, I have two things, but I think that they are connected in a way. I have RH 8.0 on my desktop and Windows XP on my laptop. I have a router that is Linux compatible, and a shared Internet connection, but I want to Share a few files between the two machines, how would I be able to do this. Also I want to set up a remote computer connection from my laptop (XP) to my desk top (Linux) how would I go about doing that? To clarify what I just said I want a window in RedHat that has my xp computer on it. That was some awkward wording Thanx PS if you could use laymans terms on this or explain th technical stuff for me I would appreciate iit. I am still new to Linux. thanks again Download the tightVNC Windows version. The Windows version is both a client and a server. Now connect to it from RedHat. Mandrake provides the tightvnc software in their standard installation. I have a machine running Red Hat, but it's not on right now. If I turn it on, I'll let you know whether red hat provides an easy way to do this. Be aware that tightvnc is very optimized in Linux, but not so much in Windows. This means that performance will be generally better when you connect to a tightvnc Linux server from windows than the other way around. Of course, your hardware also plays a role in all of this. Best of luck
  13. Quote: 2 networked computers 1 Suse 8.0 2 windows 98 I mount the windows files like this #smbmount \\\\tomay\\c /mnt/c Everything works ok until I want to view a folder that contains files with localised characters (©ÐÈÆ®¹ðèæ¾) you probably won't be able to read them. When I browse to such a folder the browser just stops responding. I can kill the X with ctrl+alt+bckspace but if I try to browse /mnt/c folder the same thing happens. Is there a solution for this???? How can I unmount //tomay/c It won't unmoun using -f It stops on shutdown, when it tries to unmount (complaining about the connection being in use), so I have to turn the computer off manualy. Is there something stronger than umount -f ???? Please help. Update to the latest version of Samba. Windoes 98 also has a hard time with long file/folder names. it truncates them and often even corrupts them when using the CIFS file system. This was solved later on. You may also want to try LinNeighborhood to see whether you get the same errors by mounting the files with that utility.
  14. Are you sure that your disks are not defective? Otherwise, it should work without issues. Do a checksum and see if it returns the right values. If that doesn't work, try burning the ISOs. You might also want to get some cheap CDs to help Mandrake along, if you can afford it. It will also come with some nice documentation.
  15. I am about to build a personal file and web server. The setup is as follows: Gateway G6-450 Pentium II-450 Mghz 384-MGB of RAM 3COM-595TX Card Cheap DVD-Drive Quantum 13GB HD 2 WD 200 GB JB in Software Raid 1 Promise TX2 Ultra 100 PCI Card (came with the drives) Mandrake Linux 9.0 Here's my problem. When I get to the partitioning tool of the installation, the installer only sees one of the two WD drives attached to the Promise controler. If anyone can shed light on why this might be happening, I'd be very appreciative. Mandrake has a very tuned Apache with all kinds of extensions pre-compiled, so if possible, I would much prefer to use Mandrake. This is not a hardware issue as Red Hat 8.0 sees both drives and installs allowing me to setup a Raid 1 between the 2 WD hard drives. I have used the Raid 1 to place my /home and /var directories there. I really would prefer to use Mandrake as that what I have always used for the past 3 years and know best, so lend a hand if you can. Thank you, Yuyo
  16. In case somebody can clarify the mistery, I went and tried Mandrake 8.2 and it sees both drives attached to the Promise controller and it is able to create the Raid Arrays from them. This really makes no sense. How can something work on Mandrake 8.2 and not do so on Mandrake 9.0? I wish I could fix this as it will be double work to update the much older 8.2? Somebody has to have a good workaround for this. If you can please help.

    RAID kill penguin?

Quote: anyone knows how to resolve problem among RedHat 7.2 and RAID controller on Soyo P4X400 Ultra Dragon motherboard? original RedHat installation cd can't start installation on my server ("kernel panic: attempted to kill init" error message is showned at start process). so I tried with a redHat 8.0 boot floppy (only to boot initrd), then my RedHat 7.2 cd start installation. I have many problems with hd (2x60GB Matrox) partitioning, cause filesystem formatting process can't finish (I give it an entirely night!)! I tried also with RAID driver (with "linux dd noprobe" kernel option).. who can help me? :x Read what I wrote about an Epok 9HKA-2. If I am not mistakeny your motherboard has the HPT372 chipset in it and there is no support for it yet. There are ways to be able to install LInux on a machine such as yours, see above thread, but it takes a bi tof work. I did it in the following manner. Remove power to the drives connected to the HPT controllers, install Linux on a different drive and then you will have to fix box Lilo and your fstab as it will point to the wrong mount points once you connect the HPT372 drives. YOu will then be able to bot into Linux without the kernel panic, but not use the drives. High-point doesn't make suitable drives available for Linux and that, my friend, is the root of the problem. Otherwise, you might want to wait or even try one of the Mandrake Linux or Redhat's betas to see if this issue has been resolved. I have an HPT-370 integrated controller in my motherboard and really wish I had gone for a motherboard without one and a 3ware Raid card. Best of luck
  18. Quote: Well thanks for replying, it looks like its not just me who has this problem. i recon ill just get a copy of red hat, at least that will run my raid card. thanks for your help!! Borris Actually, this is a Kernel problem and not a Mandrake or Red Hat specific problem. At least, that is what I was able to find out in the installation of an Epox EP-8K9A2. It is possible to install Mandrake by removing power to the Raid drives upon installation. After installation, you will have to boot into Mandrake, change lilo to point to the new location of your /root and /home partitions, as these get remapped once you plug in the HPT372 drives. You will also need to redo your fstab to make sure that the mount points point to where things really are. What do I mean by remapped, you ask? If your root partition is hda5 upon installation, it may become hde5 once you plug inthe HPT372 drives. This is not difficult, but it isn't trivial if you have never done it before. This is a workaround and not a fix. The real source of this problem is the failure of motherboard makers to offer appropriate free drives with their motherboards. If you are serious about IDE RAID card, get a 3ware card. They are well supported by one of the biggest storage companies in the world. Keep in mind that Linux has outstanding software raid, which in most instances outperfoms what the highpoint controllers can provide. Good luck, Yuyo

    Setting Up tightvnc server

Quote: hi. can anyone give me some brief steps on how to set up tightvnc server? because everytime i set it up, only the X desktop is shown, so the current desktop is not seen!!! Thanks and God Bless In Mandrake Linux, you need to install vncserver. #urpmi vncserver Once you do so, open a terminal in the user display that you want to export. This can be done locally or remotely. Type the following: vncserver --geometry 1280x1024 (You can change the geometry to whatever you want to output 1024x768) Provide a passowrd when it asks for one. Start the tightvnc client. Good luck, Yuyo
