    QuickcamUSB doesn't work?

RH found mine on the install, never had to config anything. in fact, it worked on my USB hub, which XP gave me errors on. XP saw it, but couldnt use it unless i pluged it right into the PC (power issue) but in the hub with no extra power source, linux had no issue. i know this doesnt help, but what the hey

XP vs. 2000 with a hint of Linux

Ok, I have had the final MS straw. Had a dumbarse, excel froze and hung, windows lost every freaking printer that WAS installed on it, and when i tried to readd a printer it couldnt find any lpt ports. SCREW MS! im going to go home and delete xp and make my machine dedicated linux, sell my games that only run on windows and live HAPPILY ever after!

APK P.S.=> To me? Apple currently represents the "perfect Unix based machine" for end-users... what Unix should always have been! apk ------------------------------------------------------------------- Almost perfect, because its nix based, it comes with the nix security issues as well. doesnt seem to be as much of an issue, but I have seen atleast on problem so far. Its by far a prettier, more stable, as user friendly option for those wanting to escape the iron grip of faulty MS bug ridden vaporware.

Ok, A$$ got edited (censored) yet you can hear it all day long on your local radio station. Does the moderators possibly have their priorities WAYYYYYYYYYYY out of whack? ofcourse, its an NT site, a pro MS site (Bill Gates: censor censor censor, keep them stupider than we are!)

    DirectX 9

its not the same. For PS2 they KNOW what everyone is using, they KNOW how to optimise the game code. for PC it does matter what you have, they are trying to make it generically for x86 platform. All of the PCs are running differnt OS's, different proc. speeds, different video cards, different amounts of ram. They try to code it using the lowest common demoninator and still make the game work nice, but that doesnt always happen. Thats why MACs are so stable, they follow some form of standards (risc processing, only one brand of proc. not 3 /amd, intel, cyrix/ its a whole different world, ill bet you a mac version would be more stable. (i dont own a mac, and never have, and im not a mac fanatic, i just know they are stable *** machines)

    M$ users.......read on

original sapiens74 /* No one makes you Use IE, or Windows Media. */ Yes they do, MS even tried to make msn.com viewable ONLY by IE untill they got their hand slapped. If you tried to view the page with anything but IE you got a page telling you to upgrade to IE. Its also obvious MS see's linux as a viable threat. We all know Mac isnt (ONLY because of its hardware price) because MS makes IE and office for Mac. They dont for linux (an open source OS that they could make IE and office work flawless on because they have the core code) because they know Linux has a future chance of being their downfall. and they also know if they make office for linux they are going to lose a butt load of money from lower sales of their OS's. Its already been shown in surveys that alot of companies would ditch ms OS if they could get office to run on another system (but again mac hardware is not cost effective unless you are into grafics.) On the other hand, Linux isnt going uphill very fast because its not user friendly for joe blow who just wants to use email or surf the web, considering you do have to have a clue, so you can setup security and add apps (average people are gona say tar what? rpm..huh?) So here we have 2 ups and 2 downs. Windows is easy, but not stable, user friendly but causes a good deal of agrivation. Linux is stable, but not easy, not user friendly, causes a good deal of agrivation but for different reasons. I personally think MS is best set for the desktop and Linux for servers. desktops need to be easy, and servers extremely stable. There you have it. I can dream enough to wish MS death, but smart enough to see they arent leaving the desktop for awhile atleast. But the linux server arena does keep growing.

    Lost Administrator Password

There are several Linux boot disks out there for download that will change any NT password on the local machine (local being the one they can get to physically and boot with the floppy) Change the BIOS's to have an admin password, make the floppy not bootable via the bios, sure its not going to STOP anyone, but may make it not worth their while, especially if they have a chance of getting walked in on with the case open. (i think ntbootdisk.com has this disk too, the linux disk that is)

    Lunix

Linux isnt really "that" hard to make work. There are a few things that may snag ya up, but considering the license fees, linux vs ms. Linux is the way to go, especially for a server, you config it once and let it go, it can collect dust, sit in water, anything and will still plug away as whatever you set it out to do. (ok maybe not sit in water, but damn close!) them thar winderz may be purty, but you cant beat linux, especially for something dedicated, config, leave it, done, for good.

XP vs. 2000 with a hint of Linux

From what I understand SMB/Samba even with encryption is not very hard. I have a buddy that uses it on an all Linux network with a win2k box for mp3s and some apps. Works well, and i think he had it working in minutes.

XP vs. 2000 with a hint of Linux

SMB (aka samba) is a network service winderz uses, its already there. just need it on the linux side of things. i think i explained that right, i know what i mean, i think i got it out right

Linux VS NT in real world tests. http://www.heise.de/ct/english/99/13/186-1/ and this is a slashdot link instead of other links just because it has so many, and im lazy. http://features.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=99/04/23/1316228&mode=thread&tid=109 The benchmark had been paid for by Microsoft. The Mindcraft press release failed to mention this fact.

XP vs. 2000 with a hint of Linux

I read about the tests on slashdot.org, there was a link to where the tests were actually done, if i get the time ill post the links. The company that did the testing is a known MS lackey One of the tests, the same test was done by another company and the results, while were less far apart, linux came out ahead. the original tests made it look like win2k was a universe ahead of linux, where the second test showed linux being ahead of win2k but not THAT drastic of a different (but enough of one)

XP vs. 2000 with a hint of Linux

When i read that it was win2k server vs linux (redhat i think, 7?) It was rateing their networking and file systems (NTFS and EXT2) But ext3 is wompin on ntfs even more than ext2 did. As for security, the usual, hole..exploits.. all that jazz. For instance IIS vs the default installed apache server (a whole different test) you have to admit, IIS vs Apache, apache wins no problem.

Off Topic: Which Linux should I run, fed up.

Go with Redhat if you are TOTALLY new, its really not much different than mandrake, mandrake is based off of redhat. Redhat keeps their security patches much more up todate, and you get a nifty icon on your task bar that lets you know (if you are online) that there are new updates for the system. mainly security updates. Once you get really comfortable with linux, then id say slackware is the best. But debian is usually known for being the most secure.

XP vs. 2000 with a hint of Linux

That's impossible due to the way the GPL works. Any works derived from GPL'd code must also be placed under the GPL. When Richard Stallman devised the GPL he envisioned a community where everyone was free to share the ideas and to improve on the works of others. Not only that but if M$ were to actively rewrite GPL'd code that would make a mockery of the stance on open source software ahhhh, sounded like a good idea anyways best of both worlds.

XP vs. 2000 with a hint of Linux

I was joking about the gates fanatic comment. I use windows at home, and linux on only one PC, i do love linux however, more than windows, but i like windows to a degree. But from experience in the working world, the *nix machines seem to be much more reliable than the windows servers and desktops, not trying to dis windows, just a reality I have seen. (but thats what keeps us in jobs What i do like thought is the chance to have a choice. I use linux beacuse i like it, it does really everything I want other than a few games (even tho i can make them work, its not native). But ill tell you, if i get a game that can run native under either OS, ill buy the linux version because the overhead of linux, i have more free system resources than when i run windows. something else i love about linux is ssh, so from work i can ssh in, do downloads, irc, text web browse, with such low trafic (compared to vnc to windows, etc..) so i dont have high trafic to get noticed at work

XP vs. 2000 with a hint of Linux

now that I think about it, with linux being open code, why dont the brainiacs at redmond, rewrite the code so they dont have it GPL anymore, (rewrite meaning, how Linus rewrote minux into linux type of idea) and make a new windows that runs Win32 and *nix apps. they certainly have enough money to make it happen, sure it would be kind of bloated, but then again, thats just the nature of the game. (cygwin lets you run nix apps on win, winex lets you run win apps on linux) so id imagine one way or another it could be done.

XP vs. 2000 with a hint of Linux

If i had a copy of Visual studio .net id install it with winex and tell you how it went, but i dont... I know that everything I have tried to make work with winex has worked except for IE (which was supposed to work, and seems like tons of other people had no problem) oh and msn messenger. didnt crash, just didnt run. Installed MS Mediaplayer, even put an icon on my linux desktop

quote: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Originally posted by Xelerated I read the same report that other dude did about Linux having more security flaws than windows, But i guess he missed the part where MS paid for that test. can we say buying the judge? or contest fixing? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sounds like the rantings of a Linux lunatic. Got anymore conspiracy theories? Sad part is, MS admited to funding the test. Along with another test for benchmarking Win2k vs Linux (forget which distro though) it was atleast a year ago. Are you sure since you are an MCP MCSE you aren't part of the brainwashed bunch? I didnt mean to insult your daddy gate's
