What's the verdict on SP3, then?

Quote: XP allways worked great for me even since the alpha days one of my fav builds was 2252 alpha when they had just introduced the watercolor theme. Then you must have been one of the lucky ones, or maybe I've been extremely unlucky. They have installed XP on some computers I have access to at my university and at one point in time they crashed almost once an hour. Try doing programming on one of those.

    Renaming C:\Winnt

I've managed to run Win2k out of C:\WINDOWS for quite some time. The way I've found requires a reinstall but it works. First you install some other version of windows, and then you start the installation of Win2k from this running version of windows and choose to do a fresh install. In this way the Win2k installation detects another windows version and you get the choice of directory, but do yourself a favor and install in another directory than the one you already have an earlier windows in if you want to be able to remove the "old" windows.

    GigaE ok on cross-over cable?

Quote: I was under the impression that gigabit ethernet nics atomatically pick up a direct connection and a crossover cable is not neccisary. This does make sense because the gigabit does use all 8 wires unlike 100Mbit. Maybe this is the case with gigabit ethernet, but I've only seen one piece of equipment that can actually cross-connect internally if needed most equipment I've seen is only capable of polarity change on the signal. What this adds up is that internal cross-connect is possible, it's just not common to see on non gigabit ethernet equipment.

    MSI KT3 Ultra2-R and Win2k

I've recently built a new computer and based it on a MSI KT3 Ultra2-R motherboard. In the beginning it booted just nicely and I was able to install Win2k and all other programs I wanted. Then I shut the computer down for the night and the next day it started making trouble. When I turned the computer on it booted and began to start Windows but then suddenly rebooted, sometimes it managed to start Windows but then suddenly rebooted after a couple of minutes without any warning. This motherboard comes with hardware monitor for temp. and voltage and the program supplied with the motherboard gave no warning on abnormal values. In an attempt to find out what was wrong I started to take expansion cards out one at a time. I even went as far as doing a complete memory test with a program called Mem-test which is OS independent. This test ran to completion twice both taking approx. 25 minutes seperated by me rebooting the machine. My question is then if anybody here has any idea what the problem might be? Everything I've done to locate the problem indicates a motherboard problem, but as the problem only seems to occur when starting Win2k, I'm confused. I should probably add some specs: CPU: Athlon XP 1800+ Motherboard: MSI KT3 Ultra2-R RAM: 2x 256 MB PC2700 from Samsung Cabinet: Cheiftec AX-01SL-D (Aluminium cabinet with room for 4 additional fans only one running cooling HDDs) Graphics: ASUS V8440 (GeForce4 Ti 4400) Sound: Sound Blaster Live 1024 NIC: Level One FNC-0109 HDDs: IBM 120GXP 80GB and IBM 75GXP 30GB DVD: LiteOn 16x FDD: standard FDD

    GigaE ok on cross-over cable?

I see no reason why gigabit ethernet shouldn't work with cross over cables, besides the speed and a few differences in the standard, e.g. frame size, it works exactly like earlier versions of ethernet over TP cables. Gigabit ethernet over copper cables works best with cat 7 cables but cat 5 should do the trick under many circumstances, main parameters being noise and distance.

    Website software?

If you want something that is comprehensive and relatively easy I would recommend HTMLGate. I've only used an earlier version of the program but I remember it be a great program for beginners and somewhat experienced users.

    Win2000 and MBR

I need to get Win2000 to take over the MBR without reinstalling. Currently I have a boot loader, LILO, in my MBR but as I want to remove the hard drive that I've installed linux on I need to remove LILO from the MBR. In theory it is simple I just need to execute the command "fdisk /mbr" but Win2000 comes without the fdisk program, at least it's hidden as I can't find it, so what do I do?

    Upgrading computer

I'm upgrading my computer or to be more correct building a new. As part of this I'm planning on moving my primary hard drive from my old computer to my new computer, but will that mean that I have to reinstall Windows 2000 or do I have any way of making it work in my new computer?

    Fleet Command Patch 1.1

Found the solution myself, but not where you might expect. Instead of using a previously downloaded version of the patch you need to download a new version. They still call it 1.1 update but they have changed the patch so that it'll work, probably, on all NT versions of Windows.

    Fleet Command Patch 1.1

I finally got Fleet Command installed on Win2K by using Sonalysts NT installer, but my troubles aren't over yet. Has anybody found a way to patch this game to version 1.1?
