How to slim down WinXP Pro?

Have you got WinDVD yet, if not it needs activating every time you do a new install. Late last year I changed my server and therefore my email address, I cannot activate it now, money lost and a useless program. This activation lark is spreading. WinDVD CDR diagnostic and all Arrowkey programs Mindsoft superspeed.com - when you do a new install not only do you have to activate it, you have to supply to them a mini statement why you need to re-activate it and what you are going to do with the previous licence key you got. They describe the licence key as a "Permanent licence key". Can you decode that one. IMHO, a permanent licence key lasts for the life of the program while in your possesion. DVD Xcopy 123 studios. There are others I don't remember just now.

    DVD Software Poll

I bought WinDVD, afterwards I discovered it uses that (*&%£$£() activation malarkey. I changed my server and I can'y activate the damned thing. I have learned, don't buy software that uses activation, 'cos if the software house closes or as happened with me the program is useless. I emailed Intervideo with no reply.

    Finding your XP Cd-key

Windows up to and including WinME stored the whole cd Key in the registry, and it not encrypted, and Office programs too. XP SP1 checks for pirated Cd Keys, the keys must be encrypted, but they are there in some form.

  9. Powertoys Tweahui for WinXP will get rid of the low disk space one, I can get rid of the tour, but I can't remember exactly how, but, it could be right click on the icon and, IF I remember correctly, you can get rid of it there.
  10. OEM versions do not need activated. The only software that has to be installed by you is any that you installed, the software that was installed in the `puter when you got it is installed when you re-install windows. That is the case with all the PC`s on sale here in the UK, Packard Bells have Windows and the software in a hidden partition, all you do is use the recovery floppy to install the lot, that takes time. In my sons PC (Pentium3), 2 1/2 hours. And I didn`t know what you meant by resealing, that would be a term in the USA but not here. It is possible for a PC to come with them all installed I suppose, and you get a lot of CD`s, then you have install them.

    Slow shutdown

Ok, If you don`t know how how to modify the registry - Then DONT. Do so at your own risk. Go to Start -> Run and type "regedit". Go to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control" click on the "Control" folder. In the right window you will see this key "WaitToKillServiceTimeout" Double click that key and set it to a value lower than 2000. I set mine to 100 then Rebooted. Works great.

List the problems you have had with XP :) :)

I just got the 2002 version of XP Pro upgrade. It doesn`t put framedyn.dll in the correct location, it sticks it in system32. Management console thing won`t work untill I put it in Windows folder. Otherwise, XP is good. PROVIDED, the correct drivers are used. I had a Hayes accura V92 external modem, XP installed it every time I started it. I got the internal version on that modem, exactly the same only made to go internel. Works perfectly. They didn`t do a driver for the external one for XP.
  14. Please explain what you mean by reseal ?.
